It also provides information about ServeRAID support for the IBM TotalStorage DS300 and DS400 external storage enclosures. Follow each step in this README to ensure that your ServeRAID controllers have the latest firmware and software levels. The ServeRAID 8.40 release of code contains the following levels of firmware: o Firmware level 5.2 for the ServeRAID 8i SAS controller o Firmware level 5.2 for the ServeRAID 8k/8k-l SAS controllers o Firmware level 5.2 for the ServeRAID 8s SAS controller Creating logical drives, prior to installing the ServeRAID Manager program, requires the "IBM ServeRAID Support" CD. This CD comes with your ServeRAID controller, or you can download an ISO image from the IBM Support Web site. Refer to the documentation that comes with your CD writer for details on how to create a CD from an ISO image. If a CD writer is not available and the CD is lost, defective, or destroyed, contact the IBM HelpCenter for a replacement "IBM ServeRAID Support" CD. 2.0 Installation and setup instructions ________________________________________ NOTE: For detailed installation and setup instructions, refer to the IBM ServeRAID Installation Guide (INSTALL.PDF) in the /BOOKS directory of the "IBM ServeRAID Support" CD. 2.1 Updating the BIOS and firmware ___________________________________ 1. Install the new controller in the server. 2. Insert the "IBM ServeRAID Support" CD into the CD drive; then, turn on the server. 3. Wait for the IBM ServeRAID ROM Update Wizard to start and follow the instructions on the screen. NOTE: The BIOS and Firmware can also be updated using diskettes which can be found in the /DISKETTES directory of the "IBM ServeRAID Support" CD. If you are running Windows or Linux, the BIOS and Firmware can be updated through an executable online update which can be found on IBM.com. For detailed instructions on each of these methods, refer to the README accompanying your preferred update media. 2.2 Creating logical drives ____________________________ NOTES: o Skip this step if your ServeRAID controller already has been configured with logical drives. o You must create logical drives on the ServeRAID controller before you can use it. 1. After the "IBM ServeRAID Support" CD updates the BIOS and firmware, reboot the server. When the ServeRAID Manager starts, you will see an Express/Custom choice on the screen. Choose Express for the ServeRAID Manager to automatically create your logical drives. Choose Custom to manually create your logical drives. 2.3 Installing or updating the device driver _____________________________________________ Device drivers are provided on the "IBM ServeRAID Support" CD, or for download from IBM.com. For detailed information on installing or updating a device driver, refer to the IBM ServeRAID Installation Guide (INSTALL.PDF) in the /BOOKS directory on the "IBM ServeRAID Support" CD, or refer to the instructions which come with your specific driver update package. 2.4 Installing the ServeRAID Manager _____________________________________ The ServeRAID Manager installation package is available on the "IBM ServeRAID Application" CD. Refer to the IBM ServeRAID Installation Guide (INSTALL.PDF) in the /BOOKS directory on the "IBM ServeRAID Support" CD for more installation information. NOTE: Be sure to check the installation notes in the ServeRAID Manager README file on the "IBM ServeRAID Application" CD. NOTE: Occasionally, there is an updated ServeRAID Manager installation package available on IBM.com. Refer to the README that accompanies this package for installation instructions. 2.5 Installing the ARCCONF command-line program ________________________________________________ The ARCCONF command-line program is normally installed with the ServeRAID Manager program. If you did not install ARCCONF when you installed the ServeRAID Manager, you can install it manually from the "IBM ServeRAID Support" CD or the IBM Support Web site. Refer to the IBM ServeRAID User's Reference (SEARED.PDF) in the /BOOKS directory on the "IBM ServeRAID Support" CD for installation instructions. NOTE: The HRCONF command-line program is also installed with the ServeRAID Manager. HRCONF only supports the IBM ServeRAID 7e and ServeRAID 8e (Adaptec HostRAID) controllers. 3.0 Troubleshooting tips ________________________ 3.1 General ____________ o If you initialize one or more drives in a flashcopy source array, the flashcopy target cannot be deleted. To avoid creating a flashcopy drive that cannot be deleted, you must delete the flashcopy drive first, before you initialize the drives in the source array. o You cannot create a RAID volume using the ACU BIOS configuration utility program for the ServeRAID 8i SAS controller. Use the ServeRAID Manager program, either in desktop or bootable-CD mode, to create RAID volumes for the ServeRAID 8i. o The ACU BIOS configuration utility does not distinguish between RAID volumes, simple volumes, and spanned volumes. It reports all volume types as just a "volume". Use the ServeRAID Manager program to view volume properties. o If you start a server with the "IBM ServeRAID Support" CD in the CD drive, the following warning message might display: You passed an undefined mode number. Press to see video modes available, to continue or wait 30 secs Press the Spacebar to continue starting the "IBM ServeRAID Support" CD. Then, the following message displays and the CD starts: Uncompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel. o If you start a server with the "IBM ServeRAID Support" CD in the CD drive and a "boot:" prompt appears, then one of following might be preventing the CD from starting: - The Caps Lock or Scroll Lock is set. - The Shift or Alt keys are held. Press at the boot prompt to continue starting the "IBM ServeRAID Support" CD. o If you start a server with the "IBM ServeRAID Support" CD in the CD drive, and you are unable to eject the CD after exiting the ServeRAID Manager, do the following: 1. Turn off the server. 2. Turn on the server. 3. Press the eject button on the CD drive. o If you are running DOS applications in protected mode, you must add the following lines to the CONFIG.SYS: device=x:\himem.sys device=x:\emm386.exe NOEMS where x is the drive where DOS is installed. o If the IBM Active PCI Eject Wizard fails to stop the ServeRAID controller, stop the ServeRAID Manager service that is running on the server. The IBM Active PCI Eject Wizard displays the following error message: "The device IBM ServeRAID Adapter cannot be stopped because a program is still accessing it." To properly eject the IBM ServeRAID controller, do the following: 1. At a DOS command prompt, type: NET STOP SERVERAIDMANAGERAGENT 2. From the IBM Active PCI Eject Wizard, eject the ServeRAID controller. 3. At a DOS command prompt, type: NET START SERVERAIDMANAGERAGENT o The Caps Lock key is disabled when using the ServeRAID Manager program in bootable-CD mode. o To repair a failed installation of ServeRAID Manager, uninstall the program (ignoring any errors that might be reported), restart your server, and reinstall the program. o When you shut down Windows, you may see the message "unexpected shutdown". This message is displayed if the ServeRAID Manager Agent fails to exit within 3 seconds. It has no effect on file I/O or other system operations and can be ignored. 3.2 Driver update issues _________________________ o When you update device drivers on Windows Server 2003, you may see adapters marked "Not Responding" in the ServeRAID Manager program. When the update is complete, the adapters will be marked "Responding."
