How come my trademark character doesn't print?

Question

How come my trademark character doesn't print?

Answer

In codepage 363, the trademark is at hex 5E. By default, SCRIPT thinks a 5E
is a control word separator. Turn off the control word separator when you
define your trademark. This feature will bite you whenever you try to use
  hex 5E from any codepage.

.cm xmp assumes body font = 10 pt
.df pisans type ('pi sans serif' 6) codepage T1GPI363
     .cm turn off cw separator
     .dc cw off
     .dv r font pi6ss baseline +p2 /&X'5E
.cm turn cw sep back on, then use the symbol
     .dc cw
     trademark&r.
