Unqualified space units--what the heck are they?

Question

What does it mean when I read that DCF does not use the current font for unqualified horizontal space units? And what are unqualified space units?

Answer

Unqualified space units means you told SCRIPT you wanted horizontal space
  in characters:

      .in 5

  or vertical space in lines:

      .sp 5

Horizontal space in characters means the width of a figure space in the
  default font

Vertical space in lines means the value of a line space in the current font

Unqualified units should be used with caution as results are subject to the
fonts used and the device type for which SCRIPT is formatting.
