SYSGEN HINTS/TIPS. 3. 94/03/17 IBM AIX Print Services Facility (PSF) Version 1.1 SYMPTOM: Risc System/6000 system hang CIRCUMSTANCE: * Hang occurs after the superuser (root) attempts to load the PSF/6000 channel device driver using SMIT running under XWindows: SMIT (Running under XWindows) Devices PSF/6000 Printer Definition Load Driver onto S/370 Channel Emulator/A Adapter (The 'load driver successful message may or may not be displayed) HOW TO AVOID: * This problem can be avoided if the same operation is attempted from ASCII SMIT running from an hft terminal instead of from SMIT running under XWindows. Lab tests have shown that the XWindows server must not have been previously active or the operation may fail even if running the ASCII version of SMIT from an hft. The safest way to perform this operation is to perform it immediately following a system reboot. HOW TO RECOVER IF THIS PROBLEM OCCURS: * Reboot the Risc System/6000 machine. 2. 93/12/22 IBM AIX Print Services Facility (PSF) Version 1.1 SYMPTOM: Risc System/6000 system crash (Flashing 888) CIRCUMSTANCES: * A Channel attached printer (using the S/370 Channel Emulator/A Adaptor Card) has been driven by PSF/6000 on this Risc System/6000. This means that the device driver was installed with SMIT: SMIT Devices PSF/6000 Printer Definition Load Driver onto S/370 Channel Emulator/A Adapter It also means that a printer was subsequently defined and that some printing was accomplished. ... AND ... * The PSF/6000 psf.base install option is being - removed (de-installed), or - reinstalled, or - installed over an existing PSF/6000 version/release ... AND ... * PSF processes were not stopped before the installion was started. HOW TO AVOID: * This problem can be avoided if the PSF/6000 processes are stopped before the product removal, reinstall, or overwrite is initiated. To avoid this problem, please review and follow the procedures outlined in the "Reinstalling PSF/6000" chapter in the applicable PSF/6000 Print Administration publication: - IBM AIX Print Service Facility/6000 Print Administration Version 1.1 S544-3817-01 Pages 65-68 - This publication is also viewable online using the psfinfo command. HOW TO RECOVER IF THIS PROBLEM OCCURS: * Reboot the Risc System/6000 machine. * Check the status of the PSF/6000 product. If the removal, re-install, or overwrite did not complete successfully, retry it now. After reboot, there will be no psf processes running so the problem should not occur again. 1. 93/12/01 PSF/6000 1.1 not installing on AIX 3.2.5 The symptom seen with this problem is: Message: Mount Volume 1 on /dev/rmt0.1 Hit enter to continue Upon pressing enter, the above message is redisplayed. This occurs over and over if enter is pressed repeatedly. The PSF/6000 1.1 tape will not install on 3.2.5 systems. There is nothing wrong with the PSF/6000 1.1 product but rather with the Table of Contents (TOC) file on the tape that describes the tape volume and tape contents. 1.1 will install on 3.2.2, 3.2.3, or 3.2.4 systems. In order to install PSF/6000 1.1 on an AIX 3.2.5 system, you can copy the installp images from the tape to DASD and then install from DASD. The following procedure documents how to do this. Make sure you have about 75Meg available in /tmp before doing this. 1. Make a directory named /tmp/psf 2. mt -f/dev/rmt0.1 rewind 3. tctl -f/dev/rmt0.1 fsf 3 4. dd if=/dev/rmt0.1 of=/tmp/psf/psf.shr 5. dd if=/dev/rmt0.1 of=/tmp/psf/psf.usr Naturally, you don't have to put the images in /tmp/psf, you can make your own choice about which filesystem to use Ensure you have enough disk space available to install the PSF/6000 options you choose to install. There are tables in the PSF/6000 Print Administration manual S544-3817-00 showing size information by option. You can then install from the /tmp/psf directory. When installation is complete, you can delete the images from the /tmp/psf directory. If you are DASD constrained or would prefer to be shipped an AIX 3.2.5 installable PSF/6000 1.1 tape, contact the support center and a tape will be made and shipped to you (specify 8mm or 1/4 inch media type). Note: The PSF/6000 1.2 tape installs OK on AIX 3.2.4 and 3.2.5 systems. This problem only exists with PSF/6000 1.1. ************************************************************************ * SECTION 4.
