Using WEA device management with Mobility Clients Readme

This document contains information about updating the Mobility Client for Palm OS using the IBM(R) WebSphere(R) Everyplace(R) Access (WEA) Device Management Software packages portlet. The Mobility Client is a component of IBM WebSphere Everyplace Connection Manager.

This file includes the following topics:

To deploy software to Palm OS devices, you must have the Device Management Software (DMS) v1.6. You can create custom packages or you can use prepared packages to upload and assign to users using DMS Software packages portlet.

Using prepared packages

On the Connection Manager installation CD 2, there is a prepared zip file that the portlets can use to load the Mobility Client code onto devices.

Each zip file that the Software packages portlet uses contains at least one application file (.app), at least one package file (.pkg), the file WSEPackage.xml, and at least one file that contains the code to be uploaded and assigned to users.

In the dmsClients directory on the installation CD 2 is a prepared file that is ready to use with the Software packages portlet. The file is:

wcpalm.zip
This is an update for the entire Mobility Client for Palm OS. The installation is enforced after it is downloaded and you are prompted to perform a soft reset on the device upon completion.

Creating a common Mobility Client configuration package

This section explains how to take an exported Mobility Client configuration file and package it for deployment.

  1. Extract the contents of a selected package (wcpalm.zip) into a temporary directory (for example, C:\Temp\WCPalm).
  2. Export a client configuration file to distribute as a common client configuration. There are two options to obtain this configuration file:

  3. Copy the exported configuration files into the directory representing the language of choice (for example, C:\Temp\WCPalm\de for German, C:\Temp\WCPalm\en for English, C:\Temp\WCPalm\es for Spanish, etc.). You can also copy the configuration files into the root of the temporary directory if the default language is preferred.
  4. Modify the .app file (wcpalm.app) in each of the directories where the configuration files were copied by adding one line for each exported configuration file following the last entry in the .app file. For example, if option 2 was used in step 2, then you would add the following lines to the .app file in the root directory and each of the language directories:

    EWGMyConfig_acct.PDB Xd=File EWGMyConfig_acct.PDB
    EWGMyConfig_adpt.PDB Xd=File EWGMyConfig_adpt.PDB

  5. Package again the entire directory (for example C:\Temp\WCPalm) using a zip utility. Make sure that all the files are zipped using a flat path directory structure (no files are included with a path to another folder).
  6. Upload the Mobility Client packages:
    1. Using WebSphere Everyplace Access, click Device Management --> Software packages.
    2. Click Add
    3. Browse to find the prepared package wcpalm.zip, then click OK.
  7. Using the Manage Recipients portlet, assign the packages to users. For more information use the instructions in the portlet online help.

Deploying configuration files only

If you choose only to deploy configuration files, you may refer to step 2 in the "Creating a common Mobility Client configuration package" and distribute the configuration files electronically (for example, using e-mail) to the userbase. The userbase could then use HotSync on their PCs to synchronize the configuration files onto their devices.
