Hardware Management Console Installation and Operations Guide
You can access your HMC remotely by installing and configuring the
remote client on your PC.
- Note:
- Remote management does not allow you to do the following:
- Configure System Manager Secuity for certificate authority or view
Overview and Status information
- Determine the level of HMC code
- Reboot the HMC interface
This chapter discusses how to install the remote client and Remote Client
Security.
If you are going to use a PC to run the Remote Client, your computer must
have the following:
- Either the Microsoft Windows (supported versions include Windows NT,
Windows 2000, or Windows XP) or the Linux (supported versions include Red Hat
7.2 or Red Hat 7.3) operating system
- 150 MB of free disk space on the default drive for temporary use during
the installation procedure
- 150 MB of free disk space on the drive that you plan to use to install the
Remote Client
- PC processor speed of at least 800 MHz
- A minimum of 256 MB of memory (512 MB of memory is recommended)
To install the Remote Client on a Microsoft Windows system, do the
following:
- Uninstall any previous version of Web-based System Manager Remote
Client. For more information, see Uninstalling the Remote Client from a Microsoft Windows System.
- Type the following address in your machine's Web browser:
hostname/remote_client.html
where hostname is the name of the HMC.
- Click the Windows link that appears on the Web page.
This will download the setup.exe file to your
machine.
- Run the setup.exe file to begin the installation
process.
- When the Remote Client Installer panel displays, click
Next to continue.
- To install using the default location, click Next.
Otherwise, type the desired location and click Next.
- A confirmation panel displays, showing you the installation location, the
package being installed, and the approximate size of the installation
package. Click Next to start the installation. If any
of the information shown is incorrect, click Back to make
corrections.
- A status panel displays a message that says the installation completed
successfully or error messages if errors occurred during the
installation. Click Finish to close the panel.
To uninstall the Remote Client from a Microsoft Windows system, do the
following:
- From the taskbar, select Start --> Settings --> Control
Panel.
- In the Control Panel, double-click the Add/Remove
Programs icon.
- Select Web-Based System Manager Remote Client from the list of
programs on the Install/Uninstall tab, then click
Add/Remove to start the Uninstall wizard.
- Note:
- Earlier versions of Remote Client may display as Web-based System
Manager PC Client.
- Click Next in the initial panel.
- Click Next in the Confirmation panel to uninstall Remote
Client.
- A status panel displays, showing either that the installation completed
successfully, or any messages if errors occurred during the
installation. Click Finish to close the panel.
To install the Remote Client on a Linux system, do the following:
- Uninstall any previous version of Linux Client on your machine. For
more information, see Uninstalling Remote Client from a Linux System.
- Type the following address in your machine's Web browser:
hostname/remote_client.html
where hostname is the name of the HMC.
- Click the Linux link on the Web page to download the
wsmlinuxclient.exe file to your machine.
- Run the wsmlinuxclient.exe file to begin the
installation process. If the file will not run, modify the permissions
on the file so that you have execute permissions. At a command prompt,
type the following:
chmod 755 wsmlinuxclient.exe
- When the Remote Client Installer panel displays, click
Next to continue.
- To install using the default location, click Next.
Otherwise, type the desired location and click Next.
- A confirmation panel displays, showing you the installation location, the
package being installed, and the approximate size of the installation
package. Click Next to start the installation. If any
of the information shown is incorrect, click Back to make
corrections.
- A status panel displays a message that says the installation completed
successfully, or error messages if errors occurred during the
installation. Click Finish to close the panel.
- Note:
- If changes do not take effect immediately, either log out of your current
session and log in again, or source your . /etc/profile
file.
To uninstall the Remote Client from a Linux system, run the following
command:
installdir/_uninst/uninstall
where installdir is the name of the directory in which your
Remote Client resides.
This section describes how to install the Remote Client Security.
To install Remote Client Security on the Microsoft Windows system, do the
following:
- Type the following Web address in your machine's Web browser:
hostname/remote_client_security.html
where hostname is the name of the HMC.
- Click the Windows link on the Web page to download the
setupsec.exe file to your machine.
- Run the setupsec.exe file to begin the installation
process.
- When the Remote Client Security Installer panel displays, click
Next to continue.
- To install using the default location, click Next.
Otherwise, type the desired location and click Next.
- Note:
- Be sure that the location you select in this step is the same location you
selected in Installing the Remote Client on a Microsoft Windows System.
- A confirmation panel displays, showing you the installation location, the
package being installed, and the approximate size of the installation
package. Click Next to start the installation. If any
of the information shown is incorrect, click Back to make
corrections.
- A status panel displays a message that says the installation completed
successfully, or error messages if an error occurred during the
installation. Click Finish to close the panel.
To uninstall the Remote Client from a Microsoft Windows system, do the
following:
- From the taskbar, select Start --> Settings --> Control

- Select Remote Client Security from the list of programs on the
Install/Uninstall tab, then click Add/Remove to start

To install the Remote Client Security on a Linux system, do the

- Click the Linux link on the Web page to download the

- Note:
- If changes do not take effect immediately, either log out of your current
session and log in again, or source your . /etc/profile
file.
To uninstall the Remote Client from a Linux system, run the following
command:
installdir/_uninstssl/uninstallssl
where installdir is the name of the directory in which your
Remote Client resides.
To establish secure connections in PC Client mode, copy the Certificate
Authority's SM.pubkr public key file to the
codebase directory in the location where you installed PC
Client.
