To power on a managed system, select it in the contents area, and choose Power On. The HMC then asks you to select a Power On mode from a list of modes. The following is a description of the mode options:
System Profile
The System Profile power on mode boots the system according to a predefined set of boot instructions. For instance, these instructions might tell the HMC to boot the system using a certain Full System Partition profile.
Full System Partition
The Full System Partition power on mode allows you to use all of the machine's resources on one image. This is the traditional, non-LPAR method of using your machine's resources.
With the Full System Partition power on mode, you must choose one of the following profiles to power on the managed system :
PowerOnNormalProfile
This profile boots an operating system from the designated boot device.
PowerOnDiagnosticStoredBootListProfile
This selection causes the system to perform a service mode boot using the service mode boot list saved on the managed system. If the system boots AIX from the disk drive and AIX diagnostics are loaded on the disk drive, AIX boots to the diagnostics menu. Using this option to boot the system is the preferred way to
run online diagnostics.
PowerOnSMSProfile
This selection is similar to PowerOnDiagnosticStoredBootListProfile, except that the system boots using the default boot list that is stored in the system firmware. This is normally used to try to boot diagnostics from the CD-ROM drive. Using this profile to boot the system is the preferred way to run standalone diagnostics.
PowerOnDiagnosticDefaultBootListProfile
With this profile, the system attempts to boot from the first device of each type found in the list. It does not search for other bootable devices of
that type if the first device is not bootable. Instead, it continues to
the next device in the list. The system's firmware supports up to five
entries in the boot list. The default boot sequence is:
PowerOnOpenFirmwareOKPromptProfile
This profile should be used only by service personnel to obtain additional debug information. When this profile is selected, the system boots to the open firmware prompt.
Partition Standby
The Partition Standby Power On mode allows you to begin the partition creation process. Use this mode if you want to create more than one partition.
