Running CICSVR

This topic describes how to use CICSVR to recover your VSAM data. For more information, see the IBM® CICS VSAM Recovery MVS/ESA User’s Guide and Reference.

The panels and secondary windows shown here are in the sequence that they appear for a CICSVR run if you accept the CICSVR default values:

  1. Select option 1 from the main menu. A list of VSAM spheres appears.
  2. Select the VSAM sphere(s) you want to recover.
  3. Press the CompRec key (F4).
  4. If you are using DFSMShsm, select the backup you need. Otherwise, enter the start time for recovery.
  5. Accept the CICSVR defaults in the secondary windows that appear.
  6. Submit the job that CICSVR creates for you.
Note:
References to CICSVR backout in the ISPF dialog are for compatibility with CICS® releases earlier than CICS Transaction Server for OS/390®, Version 1 Release 1.

Using the main menu

When you start CICSVR, the main menu appears. If this is the first time you have run CICSVR, select option 5 to customize the JCL skeleton.

To begin recovery, select option 1 and press Enter.

From the panel in Figure 17 you can choose from these objects:

Selecting from the VSAM sphere list

To continue the recovery:

  1. Type S beside each VSAM sphere that you want to recover
  2. Press F10 to get to the menu bar, place the cursor under Utilities and press Enter

When the action is completed, the letter S appears in the select column beside each selected sphere on the CICSVR VSAM sphere list panel:

From the CICSVR VSAM sphere list panel, you can select an action by using one of the shortcut function keys, or select one of these pull-downs from the menu bar:

From this pull-down, you can select "Complete recovery" for the VSAM spheres that you selected by using one of these methods:

To get information about an item in the pull-down menu, move the cursor to the item and press the Help key (F1).

If you have the log of logs registered in the RCDS, CICSVR scans the logs and presents the results as an ISPF browse of the DWWMSG and DWWPRINT data sets. For an example of these reports, see Report of log of logs scan.

Providing VSAM sphere parameters

When you have selected "Complete recovery" from the Utilities pull-down, and if you are using DFSMShsm, you get the secondary window shown in Figure 20:

Here you can specify VSAM sphere parameters for inclusion in the recovery run. These parameters are:

When you first see this secondary window, the CICSVR default values are displayed. Press:

While CICSVR is constructing the recovery job, the wait secondary window shown in Figure 21 appears.

Recovering with DFSMShsm backups

During a recovery run, CICSVR restores the VSAM sphere from a DFSMShsm backup, if one exists for the VSAM sphere that you are recovering. The latest DFSMShsm backup will appear as the default in the VSAM sphere parameters secondary window. If you provide a new VSAM sphere name in this secondary window, the recovered data set will have this name.

Recovering with DFSMShsm full volume dumps

If you are using a DFSMShsm full volume dump, these dumps do not appear in the backup list. Enter 3 in the Backup time field, and enter the date of the full volume dump for the recovery in the backup time field in the VSAM sphere parameters secondary window. If a new VSAM sphere name appears in the secondary window, the recovered data set will have this name.

Notes:
  1. If the data set you are recovering is managed by DFSMS, the volume and unit values are ignored.
  2. CICSVR can process DFSMShsm backups, full volume dumps, and non-DFSMShsm backups in the same run.

While CICSVR is constructing the recovery job, the secondary window shown in Figure 21 appears:

If CICSVR detects errors while constructing the recovery job, the CICSVR recovery job error list (Figure 22) appears.

Listing recovery job errors

Use this secondary window to list errors found during the construction of the recovery job.

Select an error to get a secondary window that contains a detailed description of the error.

For general help information, press the Help key (F1).

Specifying the log stream type

When you have selected Complete recovery from the Utilities pull-down, if you have QSAM copies of MVS log streams, you get this secondary window:

Use this secondary window to specify the type of MVS log stream for this recovery job.

When you first see this secondary window, the CICSVR default values are displayed. Press F5 to get the default values from the recovery control data set (RCDS). Press F6 to save the currently displayed values, and display the default update verification secondary window (Figure 27).

For detailed help information about a particular field, move the cursor to the field and press the Help key (F1).

Listing DFSMShsm backups

Figure 24 shows the secondary window that appears if you press the Prompt key (F4) on a CICSVR VSAM sphere parameters panel for a sphere you selected for recovery:

This secondary window appears once for every VSAM sphere that you select, and shows a list of DFSMShsm backups for that sphere. Select the backup that you need from this list.

For general help information, press the Help key (F1).

Entering recovery parameters

When you select one or more CICSVR parameters to change, the secondary windows for these parameters appear in the order in which the parameters appear in the list.

After you press Enter in the secondary window (Figure 20), you can enter the CICSVR recovery parameters here:

From this secondary window (Figure 25), you can create a recovery job for the VSAM sphere you selected. You can accept the CICSVR default values, or change the forward recovery parameters before continuing the recovery.

When you select "Complete recovery" from the Utilities pull-down, you can define these recovery parameters for your run:

Use the secondary window shown in Figure 26 to set sequence checking parameters for your CICSVR run:

Note:
Use this secondary window only if you want to force CICSVR to use logs that are not in time sequence order, or logs that contain old data.

Updating the CICSVR default values

Use this secondary window to confirm an update to the CICSVR command default values:

Defining the VSAM buffer pools

Use this secondary window to tune your CICSVR run by changing the number of VSAM buffers:

Submitting the job

When you have entered the CICSVR parameters that you need, press Enter to get the job submission secondary window (Figure 30). Use this secondary window to submit the job, or browse, or edit, if required. Select option 4 to save the JCL that CICSVR generated for you. Select option 5 to return to the V

Saving the generated JCL

This secondary window appears if you selected option 4 from the CICSVR job submission secondary window (Figure 30):

 generated JCL as this member name.

Here you can give a member name for the saved CICSVR JCL. The member will be saved in the data set you allocated to the ddname ISPFILE.
