Installing from the command line

Running the installer from a command prompt allows you to finely control the installation.

Command line options

If you invoke the installer from a command prompt using the runtime command line option -silent, you can perform an unattended, or silent, installation, which requires no interaction with the wizard. If you run the installer in silent mode, the default setup options are used. Other runtime command line options allow you to have more control over the installation.

Creating a log file on Linux or Solaris when you are not logged in as root

On Linux or Solaris, you can install as a non-root user to any directory that the user has access to. However, when you run the installer from the command line, the installer tries, by default, to create a log file in the /var/log/ directory, which is not accessible to a non-root user. Therefore, if you are carrying out the installation when you are not logged in as root, you must run the installer with the -log !<directory> flag:
