WebSphere WebSphere Enterprise Service Bus, Version 6.0.1 Operating Systems: AIX, HP-UX, Linux, Solaris, Windows

Implementing security considerations at installation time

For security, there are a number of actions that you should take during the installation process for WebSphere ESB.

Why and when to perform this task

If you intend installing WebSphere ESB into a secure environment, you should complete the sub-tasks during the installation process. When you finish the installation process, you should protect password information before continuing to configure WebSphere ESB further.

Steps for this task

  1. Prepare the operating system for installation of WebSphere ESB.

This step describes how to prepare the different operating systems, and set up the proper authority, to install WebSphere ESB on different platforms. For more information about preparing your operating system for installation, see the platform-specific sub-topic in Preparing the operating system for product installation.

  2. Create basic authentication information when creating a profile.

When creating a new stand-alone or deployment manager profile, you are prompted for a user name and password at various stages. Enter a valid user name and password each time you have the opportunity to do so. For more information about creating authentication information during the installation process, see Creating basic authentication information when creating a profile.

  3. Secure your environment after installation.

WebSphere ESB depends on several configuration files that are created during installation. These files contain password information and need protection after installation. Although the files are protected to a limited degree during installation, this basic level of protection is probably not sufficient for your site. Verify that these files are protected in compliance with the policies of your site. For information about how to protect password information after you install WebSphere ESB, to Securing your environment after installation.

You can also protect plain text passwords used by WebSphere ESB, by encrypting those passwords. For more information about protecting plain text passwords, see Protecting plain text passwords.
