User Name Server and a large number of user IDs

When you are using the User Name Server in a system that has a large (more than 250) number of user IDs, configure the User Name Server to read the list of user IDs from a flat file rather than obtain the list by issuing calls to the security manager or security component of the operating system. The overheads that are associated with making these calls can cause excessive consumption of operating system resources.

Make sure that the file that holds the user IDs is correctly protected from unauthorized reading or updating. Use the security features of the operating system to achieve this protection.

If you have only a small number of user IDs that are identified to the User Name Server, you should obtain the list of user IDs from the operating system rather than from a flat file.
