Applying service to the Message Broker Toolkit

Apply fixes and upgrades to the Message Broker Toolkit.

Before you apply service, you might want to consider preserving some of the resources you have created or imported. For details of this task, see Backing up the Message Broker Toolkit workspace.

The Message Broker Toolkit uses IBM Installation Manager to install service updates. Follow these instructions to install any available updates to the Message Broker Toolkit. Sometimes, updates to the information center are also made available, and these updates can be applied in the same way.

If you want Installation Manager to retrieve updates from a different location, see Changing the update repository. If you use FTP or HTTP proxies to allow applications to access the Internet, see Setting FTP and HTTP proxies.

  1. Start the IBM® Installation Manager:
    • From the Linux® main menu or the Windows® Start menu:
      • Linux platform On Red Hat, click System > IBM Installation Manager.
      • Linux platform On SUSE, click System Tools > IBM Installation Manager.
      • Windows platform Click Start > Programs > IBM Installation Manager > IBM Installation Manager.
    • From the command line:
      • Linux platform IM_install_dir/eclipse/launcher
      • Windows platform IM_install_dir\eclipse\launcher.exe
where IM_install_dir is the directory in which Installation Manager is installed.
Installation Manager opens and displays its initial panel.
  2. Click Update Packages. Installation Manager searches the update site and displays a list of available updates for the products and features that you have installed.
  3. Select the updates that you want to apply and click Update. The updates are applied.
  4. Click OK to return to the Installation Manager initial panel.
  5. Click File > Exit to terminate Installation Manager.

Changing the update repository

If you have a large number of Message Broker Toolkit users, or your users do not regularly have access to the Internet, you might find it more convenient to download updates to a local site, and modify Installation Manager to access the updates at that alternative site.

You might take this action to limit Internet access, or to reduce download times, or both.

Complete the following steps:

  1. Start Installation Manager, as shown above. Installation Manager opens and displays its initial panel.
  2. Click File > Preferences. The Preferences dialog is displayed.
  3. Click Add Repository and enter a URL or a fully qualified path to a directory on a local drive, or click Browse to search for and select your chosen location.
  4. Click OK on the Browse panel if you opened it, and click OK on the Add Repository dialog.
  5. Click Apply to confirm the update, then click OK to close the Preferences dialog.

Setting FTP and HTTP proxies

If your environment has a firewall, or uses proxies to control access to the Internet, you can change the Installation Manager settings.

You do not have to complete this task if you have changed the Installation Manager repository location to a local site.

Complete the following steps:

  1. Start Installation Manager, as shown above. Installation Manager opens and displays its initial panel.
  2. Click File > Preferences. The Preferences dialog is displayed.
  3. Expand the Repositories tree in the left pane, and select Ftp Proxy or Http Proxy.
  4. Select Enable proxy server and enter the details in the entry fields that are required for the protocol that you selected.
  5. Click Apply to confirm the updates, then click OK to close the Preferences dialog.
