Additional software requirements

WebSphere Message Broker requires additional software products to run successfully:

WebSphere MQ

WebSphere MQ is required for all WebSphere Message Broker components at the minimum supported level shown in the table below.

WebSphere MQ Version 6.0 (with tailored terms and conditions for use with WebSphere Message Broker) is supplied on CD or on DVD (on Linux (x86 platform) and Windows only). If you have a previous version of WebSphere MQ, you can use the supplied CDs or DVD to upgrade your current installation.

Notes:
  1. The minimum set of components that you must install are the server and Java Messaging components. You can install WebSphere MQ before or after you install WebSphere Message Broker.

Start of changeIf you have WebSphere MQ Version 6.0 already installed, the Java Messaging component is not installed by default. Check that your installation includes it; add this component from the WebSphere MQ Version 6.0 CD if it is not installed.End of change

On Windows, if you choose to install WebSphere MQ Version 6.0 from the Windows Launchpad, Express installation installs all required components for you. If you use Advanced installation, you must select a custom installation and include the server and Java Messaging components.

If you start the WebSphere MQ Version 6.0 installation program directly on any platform, including Windows, you must select a custom installation and include the server and Java Messaging components.

If you want to use the WebSphere MQ Explorer, the graphical interface that is available on Linux (x86 platform) and Windows only, install the WebSphere Eclipse Platform Version 3.0.1 and the WebSphere MQ Explorer components.

Other components are optional for use with WebSphere Message Broker.

  2. For some specific broker functions, later levels might be required:
    • Globally coordinated (XA) transactions are supported only by WebSphere MQ V6.0.1.0 or later.
    • Start of changeIf you develop message flows that use WebSphere MQ Real-time Transport with Multicast PGM support, you must install an iFix on WebSphere MQ Version 6.0; see the readme.html file for the latest information.End of change
  3. WebSphere MQ is not required on Linux (x86 platform) or Windows systems on which you install only the Message Broker Toolkit.
  4. On z/OS, WebSphere MQ is a mandatory requirement and must be installed before you install WebSphere Message Broker. See the Program Directory for WebSphere Message Broker for z/OS or the Program Directory for WebSphere Message Broker with Rules and Formatter for z/OS for further details about required levels of WebSphere MQ.

For details of WebSphere MQ products and supported versions, see the WebSphere Integration products system requirements Web site.

Start of change

JRE

A Java™ runtime environment (JRE) is required on all platforms:

  • On distributed platforms, Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 5 SR2 is embedded in product components.
  • On z/OS, you must acquire and install a JRE which must be at Version 5 SR4 or later.

See the Program Directory for WebSphere Message Broker for z/OS or the Program Directory for WebSphere Message Broker with Rules and Formatter for z/OS for further details and the latest information. In particular, review the information in "Preventative Service Planning".

WebSphere Message Broker supports any JMS 1.1 provider. You must consider both this level of support and the supported JRE when you select a JMS provider whose client will be embedded in the broker.

End of change

Installation Manager

The IBM Installation Manager is required to install all Rational® products at Version 7 or later, and controls installation, management, updates, licensing, and uninstall. The Message Broker Toolkit includes some Rational product components, and therefore uses the Installation Manager.

For further information about Installation Manager and the Message Broker Toolkit, see the Installation Guide.

XML Toolkit

For z/OS only, you must install the IBM XML Toolkit for z/OS, Version 1.9.

See the Program Directory for WebSphere Message Broker for z/OS or the Program Directory for WebSphere Message Broker with Rules and Formatter for z/OS for further details and the latest information. In particular, review the information in "Preventative Service Planning".

Browsers

For best results when viewing the information center from the Message Broker Toolkit, use Internet Explorer Version 6.0 (or later) on Windows, or Mozilla 1.4.2 (or later) on Linux (x86 platform).

Some Linux (x86 platform) offerings do not install Mozilla by default. If you plan to install the Message Broker Toolkit on your Linux (x86 platform) system, check that a supported version of Mozilla is already installed. If not, install Mozilla from your Linux (x86 platform) operating system media.
