Diameter is an authentication, authorization, and accounting
(AAA) protocol developed by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF)
as a more extensible alternative to the RADIUS protocol.
The IBM® WebSphere® Diameter
Enabler Component includes
Web services and a client that provide a range of capabilities for
Diameter applications.
The
IBM WebSphere Diameter
Enabler Component operates
as a peer-to-peer protocol that provides the
IMS™ Application Server with
access to the Subscriber Profile repository located in the
Home Subscriber Server (HSS).
It also provides the
IMS Application Server with
facilities to perform:
- Offline accounting functions through transactions with a Charging Collection Function (CCF)
- Online charging, or authorization, functions through transactions
with a Online Charging System (OCS)
It supports either client or server initiated connections over
a TCP transport and provides long-lived connections between peers.
