Backing Up Apex Protecting your data is an important task. We highly recommend that you include the Apex subsystems in regular backups done by your system administrator. If your Apex data is not included in the regular system backups, we recommend that you do scheduled backups on your own.
To properly backup Apex data, you must backup the entire subsystem structure. A subsystem includes all views, switches, the .Rational subdirectories with Summit/CM (configuration management) information, exports, imports, and other Apex data.
To preserve data consistency between the views and the configuration management database, all Apex processes and users should be shut down before the backup.
The following commands will backup Apex subsystems on DAT tapes or cartridge tapes. Note that these instructions are only valid if you are using the Summit/CM configuration management system (as opposed to ClearCase).
Note: The following instructions are only valid if you are using Apex/Summit. For Apex/ClearCase, please see ClearCase Administrators Guide (for ClearCase 3.2) or Adminstrating ClearCase for ClearCase 4.0 or higher) for information on backing up ClearCase VOBs.
Backing Up Apex Data (Apex/Summit)The backup procedure for Apex uses the cpio command.
While not absolutely required, we recommend that you execute the backup commands as root.
%cd <subsystem.ss>/.. %find <subsystem.ss> -depth -print | cpio -ovcB > /dev/<tape>
Note that any Apex customizations should be also backed up (for example, Summit/CM customizations pointed by the VERSION_CONTROL_KEY switch and the ~/.Rational directories).
Restoring Apex Data (Apex/Summit)Restore Apex data using the following cpio commands.
To restore Apex data, complete the following steps. While not absolutely required, we recommend that you execute the restoration commands as root.
- Restore an entire subsystem
To restore an entire subsystem, including all its views and its Summit/CM storage, execute the following commands:
Restore a single view To restore a single view. replace the metacharacters $* with <subsystem.ss>/<view>/*.
%cd <subsystem
.ss>/.. %cpio -ivdumB "<subsystem.
ss>/<view
>/*" < /dev/<tape
>
Restore only a subsystem's Summit/CM storage To restore a subsystem's Summit/CM storage. replace the metacharacters $* with <subsystem.ss>/.Rational/Version_Control/*.
%cd <subsystem
.ss>/.. %cpio -ivdum "<subsystem
.ss>/.Rational/Version_Control/*" </dev/<tape
