History Icon

Many of the fields in dialog boxes allow you to select entries from a history list. Dialog histories span windows and dialog boxes, keeping track of logical elements such as directories, files, search strings, and line numbers. For each type of logical element, the history list contains the last twelve entries, with the most recent entry first. Fields that support dialog history are equipped with a history button.

The following topics describe the various aspects of dialog histories.

Reusing a History Value

To reuse a value displayed in the history list:

1. . Place the pointer on the triangle and hold down the right mouse button.

2. . Drag the cursor to the value and release the mouse button. The value appears in the associated text field.

Clearing History

To clear the history list for a particular logical element:

1. . Place the pointer on the triangle and hold down the right mouse button.

2. . Drag the location cursor to the Clear History option and release the mouse button.

Clearing the history list of a logical element, such as directory names, clears the list for all windows.

Using the Mouse to Control a History List

You can use a history list without actually displaying it. In using the following table, note that the top of the list contains the most recent entry.

Action
Result
Left-click
Inserts the next (older) item into the field. Repeated left-clicks cycle down through the list.
Middle-click
Inserts the previous (more recent) item into the field. Repeated middle-clicks cycle up through the list.
Control-Left-click
Inserts the top item (most recent) into the field.

Saving Dialog History

Apex collects dialog-history information during the current session. Unless you choose to save the accumulated dialog histories, they are lost when you shut down the X server. To save and reuse dialog histories across Apex sessions, follow these steps:

1. . Before you exit Apex, save the current state of dialog histories by selecting Tools > Session > Save Dialog History.

2. . After you begin your next Apex session, select Tools > Session > Restore Dialog History.

In this way, you can create a set of default dialog histories and use Tools > Session > Restore Dialog History to load them at the beginning of each Apex session.
