Using Motif

Apex runs under the X Window system and is compliant with OSF/Motif style guidelines. This topic provides a brief introduction to Motif. One source of additional information is the X Window System User's Guide, OSF/Motif Edition by Valerie Quercia and Tom O'Reilly (O'Reilly & Associates, Inc., 1990).

This module has the following topics. To select a topic, click on it. You can also move through the entire topic by clicking on the Next button.

Selecting a Window

Only one window is active at a time. To select a window, point to any part of it and click the left mouse button. When the window becomes active, its frame changes color.

Moving a Window

To move a window, place the pointer in the title bar and hold down the left mouse button.

Then drag the window to a new position. An outline shows you where the window will be placed when you release the mouse button.

Raising a Window

If a window is partially covered by other windows, raise it to the top by pointing to any portion of the frame and clicking the left mouse button.

Resizing a Window

To resize a window, move the pointer to the portion of the frame you want to move, hold down the left mouse button, and drag in the desired direction. An outline shows you how the window will be sized when you release the mouse button.

Changing a Window into an Icon

To reduce the number of windows on your screen, you can minimize them by turning them into icons. A job running in a minimized window continues to execute as it would if the window were iconified. To minimize a window, select the minimize button in the upper right portion of the frame.

To restore an icon to a window, double-click on the icon.

Using Scroll Bars

Scroll bars provide the capability to display information that extends beyond the display area of a window. Scroll bars have two components, arrow buttons and a slider.

The Window Menu

The menu button appears in the upper left corner of a window frame. To open the window menu, move the pointer to the menu button and press the left mouse button.

The window menu provides commands for controlling the window, most of which you can perform using the techniques already described here. The Menu button may contain the following commands:

The Close button, closes the active window.

The Maximize Button

The maximize button appears in the upper right corner of a window frame. This button enlarges the window to fill the entire screen. To maximize the window, move the pointer to the maximize button and press the left mouse button. To restore the window to it's previous size, click on the maximize button again.
