Edit Mode and Read-Only Mode

Text-editor and language-editor windows are always in one of two modes: edit mode or read-only mode. In edit mode, you can modify files. In read-only mode (the default), commands that modify files are inactive or grayed-out. You can toggle between edit and read-only mode by selecting File > Edit or by clicking on the Edit button in the button bar.

Some editor windows for specific commands, such as the window displayed when you execute Control > Show > Differences, are read-only and cannot be toggled to edit mode.
