Preface Rational Apex®, hereafter referred to as Apex, is a comprehensive, integrated programming environment that supports the development of complex software systems. Central to this support is the partitioning of code into Rational Subsystems that:
- Represent major components of the overall software design.
- Can be developed, tested, and maintained in parallel.
- Serve as the primary building blocks for configuration management, the creation of project releases, and the collection of change history.
Because of the central role of subsystems in the design and development process, using them effectively is key to obtaining the full value of Rational Apex. Subsystems, together with the Apex software development tools used for unit development, version control, and configuration management lead to developing high-quality software with minimum risk to the project schedules and budget. Apex supports two configuration management implementations: Apex/Summit is the native Apex configuration control system developed by Rational during Apex development. Apex/ClearCase uses ClearCase for configuration control while providing the development environment of Apex.
