Tools > ShellThe Tools > Shell command opens a window containing a UNIX shell. The current directory in the UNIX shell is the same as the context from which you invoke Tools > Shell.
From within a window opened by Tools > Shell, you can enter Apex commands and read related manual pages. Many of these commands are described in the Command Reference.
To customize xterms created by Apex, you must modify the xterm clause in your $HOME/.Rational/execution file. In the simplest case, this clause has the following format:
xterm: -sb -sl 256 -g 80x34
Different options can be given to execution xterms and shell xterms. For example, to define colors for execution xterms:
execution_xterm: -bg lightyellow -fg black
The xterm options can also be conditional on the architecture. For example,
arch: alpha_osf1 xterm: -bg white -fg black -geometry 130x25
After making changes to the file, it must be reread by Apex for the new options to take effect.This can be done with the following command
apxd execution_reset
Restarting the session will also cause Apex to reread the file.
There are several ways to change the default shell window type (xterm) launched by the Tools > Shell command.
- Set the APEX_XTERM switch as follows:
APEX_XTERM=<default shell type>:unmanaged
APEX_XTERM=dtterm:unmanaged APEX_XTERM=rxvt:unmanaged
However, use of "unmanaged" results in the xterms not appearing in the window directory, not being able to pass command-line options to the command, and the created xterms are not closed automatically when Apex exits.
Edit your /$HOME/.Rational/execution file You can also change the default shell window type by editing the above file. If it doesn't exist, simply create it. This option eliminates the problems associated with the use of "unmanaged".
The xterm lines in this file have the format:
xterm: <options_or_command_line> shell_xterm: <options_or_command_line> execution_xterm: <options_or_command_line>
The xterm line afftects the shell and I/O xterms created by Apex. The others affect only shell or I/O xterms from the Run command.
To simply change the options for the default xterm, enter the options on the xterm line. For example,
xterm: -bg lightyellow -fg black
To change the default xterm type, enter the type followed by any desired options. Note that you also must include the -e option. For example,
shell_xterm: dtterm -bg lightyellow -fg black -e
After editing the execution file, either restart Apex or execute the following command to activate the new settings:
% apex_display execution_reset
