Initializing Dialog Boxes

Certain fields within dialog boxes can be conveniently filled in by dragging objects from other windows. In some cases, the object is taken as given and placed in the text field or list widget. In other cases, the semantics of the type of the field is used to place a derived object.

For the many dialog boxes that have lists of filesystem objects, dropping filesystem objects anywhere on the list widget adds those dropped objects to the end of the list. If the list is supposed to be have only views, and files are dropped then their enclosing views are added instead.

If a field represents a derived characteristic of a view and a view is dropped on that field, then the same derived characteristic of the dropped view will be placed in the field. For example, in the File > New > New View (Apex/Summit) dialog, there is a model field. If To create a new view with the same model as some other view, bring up the dialog and drag-and-drop the view you want the new one to be like onto the model text field. The model text field is replaced with the model name of the dropped view.

The Storage field operates similarly.

Dropping a view onto the background of the New View dialog sets all the attributes to those of the source view.

If a field represents a simple name and a full pathname is dragged onto it, the simple name is put into the field. For example, to create a new file whose name shares the same first 20 characters with some existing file, drag the existing file to the name field and edit the end section of the name.

Dialog Box Field Drags

There are several cases of specialized drags out of dialog box fields. The type of the dragged item is determined by the type of the place being dragged from.
