Getting Started The Apex development environment contains all the components needed to create large software systems, from planning stage to finished product. This chapter describes the components that make up the Apex development environment and shows how to get started using them.
The setup instructions outlined in this chapter are designed to work with the C, Bourne, and Korn shells (csh, sh, and ksh). Most of the instructions presented are the same for all shells. When this is not true, specific instructions for each shell are provided.
About This ChapterThe topics covered in this chapter are:
Starting ApexTo run Apex on the X Window System, the X server and window manager must be running before starting Apex.
If your workstation has been set up with a Motif menu containing an Apex command, choose the Apex menu item to start Apex. If your workstation is not equipped with an Apex menu command, start and initialize Apex by typing shell commands in an xterm window as follows:
- 1 . Set the display for your system as follows:
- For C shell (csh), execute a DISPLAY command written as follows:
- For the Bourne shell (sh) or Korn shell (ksh), enter the DISPLAY command as follows:
$ DISPLAY=local_host
:0; export DISPLAY
where local_host is the unique network name of your local workstation.
- To provide a remote workstation with access to the X server on a local workstation, execute the following command on the local workstation:
- 2 . To initialize Apex from a command line, enter:
For additional information on the apexinit command, open an Apex shell (Tools > Shell) and enter:
% man apexinit
To exit Apex, choose Exit Apex from the File menu or click Exit Apex in the Apex Panel.
The Apex Startup WindowsWhen Apex starts, the Apex panel window opens. If you have not used the -nover option when invoking Apex, a Netscape session is also started.
The Apex Panel Window
The Apex panel window is the first window to appear when starting Apex. The window displays the version of Apex you are running as illustrated in Figure 9.

The controls in the Apex panel window allow you to:
- Display the Setup window, used to create Apex projects (see the Programmer's Guide
).- Exit Apex, terminating your Apex session.
- Display the Windows
window, used to open, close, and manipulate Apex windows.- Display Help on using Apex.
- Visit files using the directory-viewer window. The data in the Visit text field can be updated to:
- Navigate to a File Selection dialog box by left-clicking the Navigator icon. Right-clicking the Navigator icon brings a pop-up menu of subsystems, system configurations, and other destinations to choose from.
- Retrieve earlier values for a text field using the History icon.
- Complete the partial pathname you have typed in the text field by left-clicking the Completion icon.
- Clear the Visit text field.
Visiting a DirectoryThe Apex panel window allows displaying a directory or an object using the Visit button. For example to display a directory, type your home directory name (or $HOME) and click the Visit button. A directory-viewer window showing the contents of your home directory is displayed.
The Directory-Viewer
A directory-viewer window, often referred to as simply a directory viewer, is a window that displays the name of a directory and its contents. The directory viewer is the main window used to access Apex files and directories and is illustrated in Figure 10.

Exiting ApexYou can close every Apex window except the Apex panel without exiting Apex. If you are not concerned about resource constraints, there is no harm in leaving Apex running. However, if you want to exit Apex completely, take these steps:
- 1 . Make sure all pendingApex operations are completed. To confirm that no Apex operations are still in progress, display the Jobs window by clicking the Navigate > Jobs command. Check the Jobs window to see that it is empty as illustrated in Figure 11.
