More on Version-History Families (Apex/Summit)

A version-history family is a directory within the version-control database that stores the version-history information for all files associated with that version-history family. These files are said to share the same history.

You associate a file with a version-history family when you control the file. Unless you specify a particular version-history family, the file is associated with a default history family.

Any number of files can share the same version-history family. Unless the files are corresponding (share the same view-relative name in the same subsystem), each specific file has its own sequence of versions that reflect the changes made to that file.

For example, two files named C can exist in different views of the same subsystem and have separate version histories (numbered sequences of versions) because they are associated with different version-history families.

Likewise, multiple files with different view-relative names can be associated with the same version history and maintain their own numbered sequence of versions.

Multiple version-history families are often used in multitarget development. For example, you could have version history families for Common, Target1, and Target2 development. The Common history would be associated with the versions of target-independent files, and the Target1 and Target2 histories would be associated with versions of files specific to those targets.

Default Version-History Families

Each view has a default history family, usually called Common. If you control a file and do not specify a version-history family, the file is associated with the default history of the enclosing view. The version history for the file is subsequently stored in that family.

To change the default history for a view, use the Control > View Properties (Apex/Summit) command.

Displaying Version-History Families

To display a list of a view's version-history families, use the Control > Show > Histories (Apex/Summit) command. The version-history families are displayed in a viewer window. You can expand the display to show the objects that are in a particular family.

Version history families are also discussed in the Concepts Reference.
