Crosshair (Trace)

The crosshair is used to help identify events responsible for data shown in the graphic windows of Trace (Task Timeline, Process Bargraph, Call Requests, Signals/Waits, Activity, and Heap Usage).

To activate the crosshair, position the mouse over the graphics area of one of the above windows and press the middle mouse button.

To deactivate the crosshair, select the Remove Crosshair option in the main window's Options pulldown menu.

The crosshair behaves slightly differently for different windows. The different behaviors are described below.

Task Timeline, Call Requests, and Signals/Waits:

When the crosshair is activated it appears as two perpendicular lines joined with a circle. The vertical line pinpoint a particular particular point in time. The horizontal line pinpoints a particular task.

Crosshair activation also creates a new text section just below the graphics section of the window. The first item in the text section is the time indicated by the vertical line of the crosshair. This is followed by the task name. (If applicable, the Process is also given.) Next comes the name and timestamp for the most recent relevant event. To be relevant, an event must have occurred on the pinpointed task, and must contribute to the display.

Process Bargraph:

Again, the crosshair behavior is very similar to that described for the Task Timeline. The difference is that the horizontal line now pinpoints a process instead of a task. Thus a relevant event is one that occurred on the pinpointed process, and contributed to the display.

Activity:

When the crosshair is activated, it appears as a single vertical line. This line pinpoints a particular point in time.

Crosshair activation also creates a new text section just below the graphics section of the window. The first item in the text section is the time indicated by the crosshair. Next comes the name and timestamp for the most recent relevant event. To be relevant, an event must contribute to the display.

Heap Usage:

When the crosshair is activated, it appears as a single vertical line. This line pinpoints a particular point in time.

Crosshair activation also creates a new text section just below the graphics section of the window. The first item in the text section is the time indicated by the crosshair. Next comes the name and timestamp for the most recent relevant event. To be relevant, an event must contribute to the display. Finally, information about the task that generated the event is given (task name, and process, if applicable).

Activating the crosshair on any one of the above windows causes it to be activated on all the other windows as well. The crosshair can be moved by pressing the middle mouse button in the graphics section of one of the above windows (and optionally dragging the mouse). The crosshairs in the different windows are kept in sync with each other. The previous events displayed in the text section may differ from window to window. This is because each window uses a particular set of events to draw its graphics.
