Region Constraints When Using Multibyte Metadata

Because ClearCase now supports config specs that include multibyte characters, we strongly recommend that all hosts in a ClearCase registry region agree on one value for the locale. Unless this constraint is observed, a config spec may be generated by a host in one locale and not be usable by a host in another locale.

Pick one locale that will be supported by all VOBs and views on a given machine. Other locales are not guaranteed to work with those VOBs or views. All view servers and clients must use that locale when accessing the VOBs or views on that machine. In summary, the rules to follow are:

• All VOBs and views in a ClearCase registry region must use the same locale; therefore, all VOBs and views on the same machine must use the same locale.

  ClearCase clients using that region must use that locale.

• VOBs and views may exist in multiple regions, but all of the regions in which they exist must use the same locale.
• View and VOB servers processes must start in the appropriate locale, for example, by making the system locale (that is, the default locale for any process on that machine) be the appropriate locale for the view and VOB servers processes.
• All replicas of a VOB must use the same locale; therefore, all registry regions that refer to any replica of a VOB must use the same locale.
