A defect in all ClearCase releases that support placement of VOB databases on network attached storage (NAS) devices can cause VOB database corruption after replacing a VOB server host. The Replacing a VOB Server Host procedure documented in the Administrator's Guide: Rational ClearCase, Release 2002.05.00 and Later describes how to "...designate a different ClearCase host of the same architecture to run the VOB server processes that manage access to the VOB... without actually moving the VOB storage." We recommend that all sites discontinue use of this procedure until a patch for defect CMBU00060754 has been made available. Sites that cannot follow this recommendation must add one of the following steps to the procedure:
After the VOB has been unregistered and had its tag removed, and before the VOB host is replaced and a new object and tag created, shut down and re-start ClearCase on all clients that access the VOB. This ensures that all clients have flushed any cached information from the original object and tag.
After the VOB has been unregistered and had its tag removed, make sure that the old host-local path on the original VOB server host does not exist (remove the mountpoint on the VOB server host or change the name of the directory or share on the NAS device). On the replacement VOB server host, make sure that the host-local path to the VOB storage is not the same as it was on the original VOB server host. For example, if the original VOB server host mounted the VOB storage directory at /net/nasdevice/vobstg/libpub.vbs, you must be sure that /net/nasdevice/vobstg/libpub.vbs no longer exists on the original VOB server host and that the replacement VOB server host does not mount the VOB storage directory at /net/nasdevice/vobstg/libpub.vbs before registering the VOB and creating a tag for it.
