Chapter 2

Installing Rose RealTime on Unix

The procedure for installing Rose RealTime in Unix is described in the following sections. Note that unless specified otherwise, your system administrator will generally carry out these steps.

For environments where there is more than one user of Rose RealTime, we strongly recommend that the main Rose RealTime files be installed on a centralized file server.

A minimum of 150 MB of disk space is recommended to install Rose RealTime.

Installation Instructions

  1. Place the Rose realTime CD in the CD-ROM drive.

  2. Mount the CD-ROM device.
You are usually required to be a system administrator (root or super-user) to be able to do this. See the instructions for your particular CD-ROM drive and operating system for details.
    HP-UX:
    mount -rt cdfs /dev/dsk/c201d5l1 /cdrom
    Solaris:
    mount -rF hsfs /dev/sr1 /cdrom
    where
    /dev/sr1
    is the CD-ROM device.

Note: In Solaris the CD-ROM may be automatically mounted.

  3. From a shell window, change directory to the mounted CD-ROM device.
    For example:
    cd /cdrom

  4. Run the setup script.

Chapter 4

License Key Information

Rational Rose RealTime, like most Rational software, is a licensed product. This means that you cannot run the product without a license key. The license key is listed on your Rational Startup License Key Certificate, included in this shipment.

Note: Your Startup License keys will expire on the date as indicated on the Startup License key Certificate. Submit your permanent license key request as soon as possible. For detailed information on licensing, see the Licensing chapter in Getting Started with Rational Rose RealTime.

The license key certificate contains a startup key required for product use. A startup key allows you to start running the software and continue running it for a limited period of time. You must request a permanent license before the temporary one expires.

The product you purchased has either a node-locked (client-based) or a floating (server-based) license. Both types of licenses can run with either startup or permanent license keys.

Startup License

The startup license keys are time-limited and allow you to start using Rose RealTime immediately.

Note: You must follow the instructions below to activate the startup license key.The instructions on the envelope and the Startup License Certificate are not valid for your Rose RealTime startup license. The startup key is valid for about eight weeks after the product shipment date.

Permanent License

You will need to acquire a permanent license key to use the software beyond the expiration date of the Startup license key. See "Obtaining a permanent license".

Installing a Startup License

Based on the type of license you have purchased and received in your temporary license certificate, you will need to start with a different file.

  1. Go to the directory ROSERT_HOME/license (%ROSERT_HOME%\license on NT and $ROSERT_HOME/license on Unix).

There will be a different template for each of the different license types available for Rational Rose RealTime:

    • developer_floating_startup.dat
    • developer_nodelocked_startup.dat
    • modeler_floating_startup.dat
    • modeler_nodelocked_startup.dat

  2. Locate the Startup License Key certificate that accompanied your product shipment, which is in an envelope. Your company’s name is printed on the certificate and shows through the envelope window.

  3. Based on the license type and product name indicated on this certificate, copy the appropriate template file to a new file named license.dat in the same directory.
For example, if you have purchased a Rational Rose RealTime Developer Edition with Floating Licenses, copy the file developer_floating_startup.dat to license.dat in the %ROSERT_HOME%\license directory.

  4. Make the license.dat file writable:
    1. Right-click the license.dat file and select Properties from the pop-up menu.
    2. In the General tab, ensure the Read-only checkbox is unchecked.

  5. Open an editor on the license.dat file:
    1. Double-click on the file.
      The Open With dialog appears.
    2. Select Notepad.

  6. Replace the string <Expiration Date> and <License Key> with what is specified on the Rational Startup License Key Certificate. Enter the information exactly as indicated.

Remove the angle brackets ("<" ">") from the entered strings (expiration date, license key, hostname / quantity if floating licenses are being installed). For example, if "27-may-1999" was on the Startup License Key Certificate, replace the string "<Expiration Date>" in the license file with "27-may-99".

    For Node-locked licenses:

    • Do not fill in the quantity from the license certificate.

    For Floating licenses:
    • Fill in the name of the host platform where the license server (Imgrd) will run.
    • Replace <hostname> with the host name of server that will run the license manager.
    • You are also required to fill in the <quantity>.

Note: For startup keys always use:

    • the number ZERO "0" (not the letter O)
    • the number ONE "1" (not the letter l) when entering the License Key
    • enter the date in the following format: dd-mm-yy

  7. Save the edited license.dat file and exit the editor.

  8. Make the license.dat file read-only.
    1. Right-click the license.dat file and select Properties from the pop-up menu.
    2. In the General tab, ensure the Read-only checkbox is checked.

  9. If you are installing floating licenses, start the license manager. "Licensing" on page 25 of Getting Started with Rational Rose RealTime.

Now you are ready to start Rose RealTime.

To get a guided introduction to the primary tools and concepts for constructing and executing real-time models in Rational Rose RealTime:

  1. Start Rational Rose RealTime.

  2. Select Help > Help Topics.

  3. Click Tour Rose RealTime.

To start building and running a model, click Quickstart Tutorial.

Your Startup License will expire on the date indicated by the Expiration Date.

Obtaining a permanent license

On the license key certificate you will find an availability date for your permanent key. This is the date on which your keys will be made available to allow you to request your permanent keys through the Rose RealTime license administrator.

Obtaining a node-locked license

To request a permanent license from Rational:

    1. On Unix execute Rose RealTime with a -license option, for example, "RoseRT -license".

On Windows NT select Start > Program > Rational Rose RealTime 6.0 > Rational Rose RealTime License Administrator.

      The following screen is displayed:

      License Request file

    2. Enter the complete information on the form and save the license request file using the Save Form... button. You may optionally use the workstation disk id (DISK_SERIAL_NUM) or the network address of the network interface card installed on your system to identify your workstation.

    3. Copy the contents of the file saved in step 3 into the text of a standard email message. Note: Do not add any information to this text. Include only the contents of the file saved in step 3.

    4. Email the request to license@rational.com. Note: Do not attach the file directly to the email message. It will not be accepted by the automated license key generation utility.

    5. You will receive a new license.dat via return email.

    6. Backup your existing license.dat file and replace it with the newly received license file and rename it to license.dat.

    7. Restart your local toolset session as appropriate.
