Conventions

In earlier releases of Windows, folders were called directories. Thus, this guide uses the term folder to mean a folder in Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0, or a directory in Windows NT 3.5.1.

Also, this guide will refer to the Windows folder. Its typical location is:

The location, especially the drive letter, may be different on your computer.

Rose 4.0 System Requirements

To successfully install and run Rose 4.0, you need:

Item Requirement

Computer

Personal computer with an 80486- or Pentium-compatible processor

Memory

At least 12 MB of RAM is recommended for Rose Modeler and at least 16 MB is recommended for Rose/C++

The C++ Analyzer can rapidly reverse engineer modest applications using 12 MB of memory, but more complex applications require more physical memory to sustain this performance. The C++ Analyzer can effectively use 32 MB or more if it is available.

Disk space

20 MB for Rose Modeler or 25 MB for Rose/C++, plus 1-3 MB for each Rose model; Rose/C++ data files require about twice the space used by the source code files

Disk drive

3.5" floppy disk drive or CD-ROM drive for installation

Graphics card and monitor

VGA-compatible; 256 or more colors recommended

Mouse

Any pointing device with at least two buttons

Printer

Any standard PostScript or PCL5 printer (optional)

Printing Rational Rose files requires no additional printer setup. If you have printer problems, try one of the following:

Operating system

Microsoft Windows 95, Windows NT 3.5.1, or Windows NT 4.0

(Rose 4.0 is a 32-bit application and therefore not available for Microsoft Windows 3.1.)

Rose 4.0 Installation Overview

The Rose 4.0 Setup wizard automatically installs the Rose executables and related files on your computer.

Recommendation: If you have Rose models that were created with a previous Rose release, do not delete or overwrite your previous release until all of your models have been successfully converted to Rose 4.0.

Note: In Windows NT, the installation is always done as a personal (as opposed to common) one, whether or not you have administrator privileges.

Rose Folder

The Setup wizard decompresses files from the Rose release media and copies them to a folder on your hard disk. This folder is referred to as your Rose folder throughout this guide. The Setup wizard will suggest a location, but you can specify a different location.

Program-Item Icons

In Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0, the Setup wizard creates a folder in the Windows Start Menu\Programs folder and populates it with program-item icons. You can then start Rose by choosing it from the taskbar's Start > Programs menu.

In Windows NT 3.5.1, the Setup wizard creates a Windows Program Manager group and populates it with program-item icons. You can then start Rose by double-clicking on its icon in the Program Manager.

The Setup wizard creates program-item icons for:

Initialization File

The Setup wizard creates a rose.ini file, appropriately tailored for the Rose product that you are installing, in your Windows folder.

Note: If the Setup wizard encounters a rose.ini file from a previous release, it moves the existing rose.ini to rose.0. If rose.0 already exists, it moves the existing rose.ini to rose.1 instead, and so on with rose.2, rose.3, et cetera.

Log File

The Setup wizard logs installation progress to a file named install.log that it creates in your Rose folder. In case you encounter a problem with the installation, this file may help you (or Rational Technical Support) diagnose it.

Rose 4.0 Installation Steps

  1. Read the Rose 4.0 release note in case it contains last- minute changes to these instructions.
  2. If you have previously installed Rose, verify that your previous Rose release is not running.
  3. You can install Rose 4.0 from either:
  4. Run Setup.exe from the Rose 4.0 release disk to start the Setup wizard.

Note: In Windows NT 4.0 on Digital Alpha PCs, run Setup.exe by choosing it via:

    Startup > Programs > Fx!32 > Install X86 Application

  5. Follow the instructions on the screen. You will be asked to answer some questions and, if you are installing from 3.5" floppy disks, to insert more disks when required.
  6. After the Setup wizard finishes, verify the success of the installation by starting Rose as described in the section "Program-Item Icons". Then you can exit Rose by choosing Exit from the File menu.

Note: This step is important, because the first time you start Rose, it completes the installation by associating Rose filename extensions with the Rose executable. This allows Rose to be started automatically when you double-click on the icon for a Rose tutorial or model.

Removing this Rose 4.0 Release

Eventually-for example, after you have successfully installed a newer Rose release-you may want to remove this Rose release. In Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0, you can remove this release by going to the Windows Control Panel and choosing Add/Remove Programs.

Note that in Windows NT 4.0, the uninstallation information for Rose is stored in the registry as personal (as opposed to common) information. Thus, it will be visible to only the user who installed Rose.
