Hi,

I am a new DOORS user (v6) having trouble with exports to Word 2002.

My ParagraphStyle attribute is unreliable so I am trying to use the style mapping dialog.
Using default mappings, I get a mixture of bold/italics and various font sizes on paragraphs
of the same style.

The dialog lists the DOORS level 1-9 object headers and 1-9 object text features on the
left and the Word styles.

Where do these Word styles come from? They do not seem to match the ones in my template file.
I have used normal.dot as well as one another post named HeaderBuilder.dot.

Thanks,

Ron Olson

The Word styles in the list do come from the template (normal or otherwise). Word has a lot of built-in styles which are not always apparent in its GUI.

If you're using Word 2002, select Format/Styles and Formatting from the menu. Then, in the pane which appears to the right, look at the bottom. From the Show: drop-down, select "All styles". Even that won't necessarily show you all of them -- if you now select "Custom" you'll get what I think is the real, full list, with checkboxes against the ones which are "visible".

I can't really say I understand what Word 2002 is trying to do with this new style management mechanism. They're probably trying to avoid confusing people by presenting too many styles, but it's too easy to miss the fact that there are still these predefined styles around.

Judith,

I really appreciate you taking the time to help with this.

I did look at the Styles and Formatting box you mentioned and the different lists of styles it can show.

If I open a new document, an show "Available formatting", I see Clear Formatting, Heading 1, Heading 2, Heading 3, and Normal.

After exporting a simple formal module to word with Style mapping, the "Available formatting" list has about 20 items. They are all either the ones I had before (e.g., Heading 1) and many others based on those with variations of bold/italics/font size (e.g., "Heading 1 + 14 pt, Not Bold") and the exported paragraphs have these additional styles rather than the basic ones (Heading 1, Normal) so I get a document of different font styles and sizes and almost everything is bold.

So, I don't know what is going wrong as DOORS doing the style mapping translation as it exports to Word.

If you have any ideas on this part, I would appreciate it.

Thanks,

Ron

I attached a sample Word export file if that helps clarify the problem.

Just to check -- are you clearing the "use paragraph style attribute" checkbox on the advanced tab of Export to Word? If not it will try to use the paragraph style attribute before using the style mapping. It shouldn't really use the paragraph style if the style doesn't already exist but it might still be causing a problem.

Thanks Judith.

Good suggestion. I have been turning that off.

At this point, I think it is either Word 2002 or Citrix (or both). We were having other problems using Citrix so I tried repeating various problems directly on the Citrix server and everything works fine there (Word 97 is installed there).

I am going to work on the Citrix issues first.

It makes sense that this kind of weird problem that works fine in other environments would be caused by an environmental issue.
