Is there a way within the DOORS user interface to select an object and then have it moved up or down one level?
Any object that was contained in a level beneath that object would be moved down or up accordingly. The reason I ask is that we have some requirements docs stored as Excel worksheets and there seems to be no way to import requirements from Excel without all of the objects ending up on the same level. If there is a DXL script out there that understands that a cell with "1.0" in it should be on level one, and a cell with "1.1.1" in it should be on level three then that would be great as well. |

There are icons to promote or demote an object, that should do it through the user intrerface.

DOORS 8.x provides icons and menu options to promote and demote objects, moving the object up or down in the hierarchy respectively.
On earlier versions of doors you can drag and drop the object, the popup menu gives you options to move the object "after" or "below" the current object. Michael sutherland has a script on his website that will build the hierarchy from legal numbers in the object heading. His website is http://galactic-solutions.com. You can check the hierarchy by looking at the tree view on the left, or by ineserting a column showing the object level. ------------------------- Tony Goodman http://www.smartdxl.com |

Andrew,
What do those icons look like? I moused over every icon in the DOORS tool bars and nothing said "Promote Object' or "Move Object Up One Level" or anything like that. I also went through every menu and nothing. I also went to the object property sheet and found nothing. I also double-clicked on the object title and text and was unable to get to the index number in order to change that thinking that would force a change in level. Can you be more specific? Thanks. |

Those functions are only in DOORS 8.2 / 8.3

Tony,
Could you give me the complete menu path to the promote/demote functionality? I looked through all the menus/property sheets/icons, etc. and found nothing. I have DOORS 8.1 so maybe they hadn't implemented that functionality yet. |

Ouch!
You woulda thunk that somewhere around v2.3, or v4.3 at the latest, it might have occured to someone at Telelogic that blocks of requirements could be integrated within larger groups of requirements resulting in promotion and demotion. I guess I'm going to have to learn Yet Another Macro Language! |

Sorry, promote and demote appeared in DOORS 8.2, so you'll have to move the objects instead, which is essentially the same thing.

Tony,
What do you mean by "move the objects instead"? And how do I go about this? Do I have to do it programmatically using DXL? Do I have to do something clumsy like this: - Create an object below some object - Cut-and-paste the text from the object I want demoted over the new object I created. - Delete the old object Or is there some sort of "move" menu item I can click on? |

David
In the DOORS Help file under tab 'Search" enter in the expression 'Using drag-and-drop' This help will tell you how to move and object. |

Michael sutherland has a script on his website that will build the hierarchy from legal numbers in the object heading. His website is http://galactic-solutions.com. Tony, do you know much about how this script works? I have a large amount of objects to import from Excel and I want to create the heirarchy with the import. Galactic Solutions has some great scripts, but unless you speak the language, it's a lot of trial and error to use them (no directions provided). I have imported thousands of objects from Excel and created the hierarchy in DOORS. I have a dxl (originally from Telelogic) which creates the hierarchy from an attribute which contains the paragraph number. In Excel create a column with the paragraph number for each row. Import this into an attribute paragragh along with all data. Running the script "makehier" will create hierarchy.
The Galactic script requires an attribute with the level. |
