Our DB was moved to Katmandu (or wherever) since Katrina wiped out the IT building here. Network has been flakey and a lot slower. Module load times have increased. We are now experiencing lots of "View List Locked" errors.
We suspect that module load times have increased so dramatically and that views are loaded last, that the DOORS client is simply timing out. Thus, this would not be a DOORS issue but a network issue, where the solution is to find a way to increase the speed of the network. Is that a reasonable conclusion? - Louie |

sounds like a reasonable conclusion to me. It has been my experience that DOORS really hates network devices (i.e. routers, bridges etc.) so my best suggestion would be to try and eliminate as many hops as possible.

Is it possible to configure DOORS to wait a little longer?

A slow network might explain why we were getting "View List Locked" errors in multiple modules and to multiple users, and then the locks went away! We had tried rebooting the DOORS server to solve the problem, but that didn't help. After awhile, the view list locks just seemed to heal themselves. Probably what really happened was that the network performance improved. Thanks for the clue!

The "View List Locked" error was a common problem with DOORS 5. It occured after any "time out", most often after a client crashs.
You can recover from this error by manually deleting every "lock.dtc" file contained in a "view" sub-directory of the database. The issue was solved by Telelogic in newer DOORS by providing a new Windows service which automaticaly does this task every n minutes. That's why the modules seem to heal themselves. If module loading is timing out, you can first consider baselining more frequently. If your network is definitely too slow, you can consider running DOORS on server, using Citrix Metaframe btw. ------------------------- E. Eric,
I still see the problem under DOORS 7.1 (XP client, Solaris server), even after ensuring that I followed all of Telelogic's recommendations regarding patch level upgrades and pre-7.1 client exclusions. The locks do go away after a few minutes. It only seems to happen on a couple of large, shareable modules, and has never happend to normal-sized modules. ------------------------- Michael Sutherland michael@galactic-solutions.com http://galactic-solutions.com |
