Answer:
Can't say there isn't a version of DOORS that defies the norm but the norm is that DOORS warns of the potential loss of data and if user responds with a yes response DOORS performs a soft delete of the object(s) that are cut.

The objects can be seen by selecting view->show deletions.

We have a problem in which we can verify the creation of an object but can't find any trace of it or how it was deleted.  The absolute number for the object just isn't there any more - even if show deleted is enabled (for soft delete).

One of our DOORS gurus mentioned that if an object is cut and then the module is saved.  There is no trace of the missing object.

Does this sound plausible?

If an object is created and the session the object is created in is not saved the absolute number is not reuseable and there is no record of the event.

Ron,

Thanks for your answer.  It is another interesting aspect DOORS behavior.

However, it does not answer my question.

Here is a synopsis of the process:

1.  An object is created and the module is saved.

2.  Later the object can even have been modifed several times and the module saved.

2.  The last person to work on the object - for whatever reason - cuts the object.  He/she may have intended to paste the cut object somewhere else but never did.

3.  With the object still cut, the session is exited and the module with the cut object is saved.

4.  The object no longer exists in the database.  More profoundly, there is no history or any indication whatsoever how the object disappeared.  It just is no longer there.

Briefly, can this scenario occur?

David, I have faced this problem a few times also, if you scan for the absolute number in the module history, you should see either the cut event or a delete event. Of course there may be a number of previous baselines to scan through, but it will be there somewhere.
