Has anyone find a way to delete an inserted picture without deleting the object containing the picture.

As far as I know I can insert and replace a picture but not delete it (without deleting the object that contains the picture...)

It seems inserting pictures using the insert/picture menu is a bad idea...

It looks like you need to use DXL to delete the picture.
With the picture object selected, select the menu item Tools, Edit DXL... and in the window paste the following line:

deletePicture(current Object)

Hit the run button and the picture will be deleted. Selecting other objects and hitting the run button will repeat the action.

Antonio is right. No way to do it via the interface. You can REPLACE a picture with DXL but you cannot ADD a picture to an existing object. So once you delete a picture that object won't have one at all.

Its a real drag. They should make pictures work like OLE objects. But YOU can make them like OLE objects. Paste the picture into MS-Word then select it, copy it, then paste it into DOORS. DOORS should recognize it as an OLE objec that contains a non-OLE picture.
