I need to evaluate DOORS 8.1 so we can decide if we are going switch over to using it. Right now, we use DOORS 7.1.

Anyone have any suggestions on the best way to install 8.1 on my local machine so that I can still use 7.1 while I'm evaluating 8.1?

TIA,
Bob

Different DOORS versions peacefully coexist on a computer, just be sure to install it in a different folder. The default folder is suitable: c:\Program Files\Telelogic\DOORS_8.1\.

You could use the default data location (\data from the above path), but since I have multiple databases on this client I create a separate folder hierarchy, c:\Doors-Data\81-0, 81-2..

Pick a port number for your database, perhaps 38100 (38101 for the 2nd database). Install doors client and server. The install should correctly default the license location, which is the same as 8.1. Be sure to read each prompt carefully before responding.

If you need multiple test local databases, see the install guide and search for "minstall" for installing the 2nd and additional databases. Be sure to just down the version displayed when this command ends, and associate that with the data location; e.g. note that version "00001" is associated with data c:\Doors-Data\81-2. That version number is displayed in the Control Panel 'Services' window which allows you to start and stop the DOORS server.

The 2nd database requires a separate DOORS icon; add the "-d " switch to point to the 2nd database: the target of the icon may look like: "c:\Program Files\Telelogoc\DOORS_81\bin\doors.exe" -d 38101@ClientName". (The client name can be seen in the MS Systems Information window).

I would test even the installs with another version. I had version 8.0 on my PC and I installed 8.1 for evaluation. I discovered that the first thing that v8.1 did was uninstall v8.0. Of course this may be something that is specific to v8.x but its still something to be aware of.
