I call on the power of the dark-side of the DOORS: Please help from DOORS IT folks:
Am trying to install DOORS v8.2 licensing and client on the test server. IT doesn't know what they are doing, Telelogic help didn't help, and adding me (user Admin) that's all 3 of us that don't know what we are doing. Here's some facts: [] The IP address of the server seems stable. [] Aaaarrrrgh; they've changed the name of the server a few times, currently settingly on a 16-character server name (Alias). Registry still has incorrect references to the old name(s) as well as references to just the first 15-characters of the name. I suspect Windows doesn't like 16-character names but I cannot confince IT to change the name to a 15-character name. [] I can indeed DOS ![]() [] I've been told that the FLEX input and output ports have indeed been 'poked' through the firewall (19353 19354). I've set the license file to use these ports. The DOORS database port is not yet poked through the fire-wall. [] Environent variable 'TELELOGIC_LICENSE_FILE' is OK, as is the FLEX registry value of the same name. There is no such 'LM_LICENSE_FILE' variable or value. [] FLEX service seems to start OK. [] When I run DOORS v8.2 from the server, we get "please specify license server" errors. Questions: [1] Anyone know anything about Windows not liking 16-Character server names? [2] Anyone know how to check, from some client, whether a particular port is open on a server? [3] Why do hot dogs come in packs of 10 while hot dog buns come in packs of 8? - Louie |

How about the client tools, do they say that the licenses can be given out on server. Not that you can also give a straight IP address to the license server information for DOORS clients. Answers [2] Telnet to the server address and specified port, from command line e.g. telnet 127.0.0.1 36677 (localhost, DOORS DB Server portI) ------------------------- Pekka.Makinen@softqa.fi SoftQA Oy -http://www.softqa.fi/ |

Don't understand 'client tools' as the only one I see is the license setup. Yes, I figure to use the IP address rather than the Server name alias.
Tried telnet from a DOS command prompt thanks. Please confirm that attempting to 'open' a connection will only work if the port is open AND there is some service on the server working that port. I notice that I cannot 'open' a port to my own client unless there's a service running. I was hoping to find out if the port is punched through the firewall, whether or not there was a service working it. - Louie |

Sorry, by the client tools I mentioned I meant the LMTOOLS application which seems to be installed along with the licensing server (in my installation in Start / Programs / Telelogic / Tools / Licensing 10 / Server / LMTOOLS).
In my understanding you can only telnet to a port which has some service running, i.e. accepting connections. Thus this is a good way of testing connectivity. ------------------------- Pekka.Makinen@softqa.fi SoftQA Oy -http://www.softqa.fi/ |

Thanks.
Guess it doesn't really matter to this thread, but so far I've discovered... ... that despite the port on the SERVER line (19353), the port getting assigned is the 'default' port 27000. Since that port is not through the fire-wall, licensing won't work. I conclude that this generic trial license file (which came with no SERVER line) needs to be re-coded to work on THIS server. ... Telnet returns right away when there is no possible connection (and says so), but hangs for a very long time or indefinately when there is a possible connection, forcing me to abort DOS window. ... IT department who don't know what they are doing are a little paranoid (and rightfull so) about an Engineer (me) poking around, who also doesn't know what he's doing. ... Telelogic assigns folks to these chores who have read the install and flex manuals and understand them. They don't necissarily assign folks who have dealt with strange licensing issues before. ... When all is said and done, a lot more is said then done. ... An pack of 8 hot dogs doesn't have the 'right feel' and people, for whatever reason, don't like picking them up. Its sort of like buying one banana. A pack of 10 hot dog buns is too unstable and bends and ruins some of the buns. - Louie |

A pack of 10 hot dog buns is too unstable and bends and ruins some of the buns. Had a long day Louie? ;-) Nevertheless ... if they sell hot dogs in 8s, what's the point in selling the buns in 10s? Unless they include two 'sacrificial' buns, because the pack is too unstable ... ------------------------- Paul dot Tiplady at TRW dot com TRW Automotive |
