Hi All,
We are running 7.1 and want to go to 8.2. We installed 8.2 on another server. I am able to log on to 8.2 and get to the Explorer view. But the Database shows empty. Which initial folder should be installed first, before I start adding more folders and modules to try the other features?
Thanks in advance.

First off, if you are migrating then adding folders to the newly created v8.2 database is a waste of time. Exit DOORS v8.2. Stop the Service. Stop the v7.1 service. Delete the v8.2 database hierarchy. Copy the v7.1 database hierarchy over to that spot. Start the v8.2 service. Log into v8.2 as the Administrator (using the old v7.1 Administrator password), confirm migrating the data.

But if you are really starting a database from scratch, then of course its empty when you create it. Just create some Project and you'll see it in Database View; and in fact in Project view.

Thanks for the tip regarding the migration of  the folders to 8.2. However I am still not there.

Probably I did not explain the problem I am facing with the blank database. I tried to create a folder or project in the Explorer window of the 8.2. When I right-click and select "New", all the options are greyed out. It is the same case when I select "File" - "New" from the menu. Is there any other way I can create a Project or Folder and load in the database?

You are still talking two different topics; [1] creating a blank Project [2] creating a project from some other database (or migrating the entire database).

[1] A brand new database features the Administrator account which you automatically log into the very first time you open DOORS. Be sure to create at least one user with database powers and full RMCDA access to the database root folder. I'd be tempted to then provide 'Everyone Else" none access (or R access), and let the Project folks decide who can read or edit their Projecs. Then log out (as Administrator) and log in as that user to create projects. The key there, of course, is providing RMCDA access to the database root folder.

[2] This is the "... and load in the database" comment you made. If you create a Project and start creating modules and folder, it won't have any relationship to your v7.1 database. I think you want to forget about creating projects and simply migrate the old data. Another option is to archive v7.1 projects and restore them in the v8.2 database, but you'll have to manage the users as well. You can do that by exporting the v7.1 user database (via manage users) and import that; but that's very dangerous for an existing database [] the Administrator account password will be as the v7.1 database [] User Accesses will get hopelessly hosed up.

This sounds like your DOORS user account hasn't been assigned the power to create a project folder, and given that DOORS will not let you put modules in the root of the database then that would explain why that option is greyed out. A srange quirk of DOORS is that if you don't have the power to create a green Project folder, then you are also denied the ability to create an ordinary yellow folder in the root of the database as well.

You need to get your DOORS Administrator or someone else who can modify DOORS user accounts and get them to change your login settings so that you have the power to create a project folder.
