Answer:
Thanks Ken,

I have since spoken to our local Telelogic Consultant and they have confirmed the availability of such a conversion tool from Germany. We are currentlly working with Telelogic to determine the commercial and financial arrangments that need to take place before this tool can be made available to us.

Does anybody know:

Will a module or project archive (dma or dpa) that is created with DOORS 8.0 be able to be restored into a DOORS 7.1 database?

If so, will the history records as viewed in DOORS 7.1 restored copy show link deletions?

And, Are there any other incompatabilities with restoring a 8.0 archive into a 7.1 database?

I just tried this out...

When I attempted to restore an archive created by DOORS 8 into a DOORS 7.1 database it generated a warning box that said 'No comment found.'. Not the most descriptive error message ever...

This is unfortunate because it means that we cannot upgrade to version 8 until our customer does because they will wan't to be able to restore our archives on their system and they may not upgrade their system for some time.

Is their a work around for this? Can a DOORS 8 archive be converted to a DOORS 7.1 archive?

Kim,

If you speak to your Telelogic Consultant they may be able to point you in the direction of a tool which has been developed by Telelogic - Germany. I have not used it myself but apparently it does just what you are asking.

Otherwise you will have to resort to csv files to go from version 8.x to 7.x.

I asked the same question earlier this year and was also being informed that it 'yes it can be done, but for a price' type of answer.

Ok, fair enough, if one customer is asking for it, but, should this functionality be not provided by Telelogic for free? Given that obviously this is a capability needed by some major customers.

If it is already been written, used and proven in Germany, why not make it available to all customers asking for it?

Be aware that any conversion is likely to only work under certain conditions. Bear in mind that DOORS 8 stores data as Unicode, meaning that data can be more than jsut most western languages as DOORS 7.1 did. Any conversion may not be able to properly spot non-Latin-1 codepage data and as such may convert it to garbage or just lose it entirely. Be aware that other data may not convert properly. DOORS 8 stores a long name with Electronic signatures, DOORS 7 does not and so any conversion may either throw this away or just make Electronic signatures totally incompatible. This is just an example and does not provide an exhaustive list of the reasons why we do not provide a conversion as standard.

Hello Werner,

can you give me the name of the product? We will also soon be migrating to DOORS 8 and I am interested in, what this tool is like.

Regards
Hubertus

Is there any further information about this issue? I'm suffering the same problem. We are just now in a migration phase between v7.1 and v8.0. But we can't stop the "rotary press" machinere in all projects and migrate all. We are doing in a gradual way. This means that, sometimes products that we have exported to v8.0 should be imported again in v7.1 in order to work with some project environments that haven't been updated yet. For those cases, we are suffering the "No comments found" warning and nothing is imported. Any ideas? Thanks in advance. Best regards.
