Hi,
I would be really grateful if someone could help a new Doors user. I am faced with the challenge of having to import from word documents containing all sorts of text and tables. I am looking for a way/process/script to read word documents into the format I require. How for example would I start simple. For example if I have a simple table in a word document eg: Req Name: Test1 name: dan Height: 180 Sex: M How could I go about creating 1 requirement in doors called Test1 with attributes name, height and sex? Does anyone have any advice on how to start achieving this? Kind Regards Dan |

I've been looking for ways to do the same thing. The only answer I've found is that Excel is capable of importing data into attributes - Word is not. It would be really nice if it could though, as we use many Word documents with tables here.

Guys,
I've written a VBA script that works its way through a Word document, paragraph by paragraph, and creates a DOORS script that it finally runs to update a DOORS module. It bases where it puts the stuff it reads from Word on the style of the Word paragraph, and it puts certain styles into certain attributes. It relies on there being a paragraph of a particular style to use as the object text, and it then assumes the following paragraphs that have attribute-styles 'belong' to that same object. There is some flexibility in the way it associates styles to attributes -- it uses a dialogue to create the associations. It doesn't actually solve your problem, but it may give you a framework that you can use to do it the way you want. If you make it work, post it back -- there's bound to be someone else that could use it! The ZIP file that should be attached contains four files, but it's been ages since I looked at them. You need to import them into VBA then invoke them from MSWord. More details escape me just now... Paul. [Edit: The zip file has been removed from here -- see the post from me below dated 15th Feb at 17:20] ------------------------- Paul dot Tiplady at TRW dot com TRW Automotive Edited: 15-Feb-2006 at 17:22 by Paul Tiplady |

Telelogic have supplied my company with a script that converts a DOORS table to a view, with an object for each row and a user-specified attribute for each column. Maybe it would be worth contacting them to see if they could supply that script to you?

The script you are referring to is actually part of the "kitchen" scripts. I use it all the time! So if you just install the kitchen, you will find the script under kithchen->Tables->Convert rows to objects with attributes.
Very useful script! ------------------------- Shawn Stepper shawn.e.stepper@wellsfargo.com |

Hi Paul Tiplady,
Your variation on the Import from Word to DOORS macro interests me, unfortunately there seems to be a few problems with the your zip attachment. 1) The form does not want to import into Word 2000 (the code is recoverable but not the actual form) 2) The include file newitem.inc is missing from the zip. Any chance you could attach the missing include file, many thanks if you can. It would be really nice to do a direct import from Word to DOORS, at the moment I frig it by stripping out tables into directories, running macros to change styles, exporting to csv prior to import to DOORS etc etc. Just never had the time to do my own import tool. It would be also be nice if telelogic removed the password from the doors.dot file so we could look at what they do, anyone know the password!! (the code seems so old/ not very good you wouldn't think they'd have a problem in unencrypting it, someone may even send them a new and improved version) ------------------------- Regards, Richard Good |

Richard,
I had a feeling I'd missed something... The missing file (newitem.inc) should be attached here. Also attached here is a screenshot of the form (export to doors.jpg), so you can get an idea of what it should look like. I'm using Word 2002, which is probably the stumbling block -- sorry! With thanks to an off-line contact, here is a full version of the zip file, with both .frm files, both .frx files, the .bas file, and the .inc file that the generated code needs. The generated code needs the include file in a folder 'TRW' below lib/dxl, but if you change the VB you can out it pretty much anywhere you fancy...
Enjoy! ![]() Paul
