Hello,
Does anyone know if there are any known issues with installing DOORS and MS SQL on the same server? We have a very beefy server thats hosting several small MS SQL databases; we plan to use the same server to host DOORS 8.0 also...I wanted to know if hosting the 2 apps is bad idea or if there are any known incompatibilities? Please advise. Thanks. |

There shouldn't be any problems with this. DOORS plays quite nicely with other applications.
I currently have on my laptop; 2 x DOORS 7.1 servers 2x DOORS 8.0 servers some sort of SQL server I seem to recall that we used to have a server running DOORS (6) and an SQL server - not sure which one. Hazel |

You can run more than one DOORS DB server of the same version on the same machine?
I thought you couldn't do that. ------------------------- Tony Goodman http://www.smartdxl.com |

Yes, this is possible.
You should run a doors servre via command line: "doorsd -debug -p <port no> -s <db path>" or start a new server as a service: "doorsd -minstall -p <port no> -s <db path>" In all cases it is necessary to use different ports. To list all installed instances, use "doorsd -list", to remove a service use "doorsd -remove" Dirk. ------------------------- Dirk Plaschke |

It is part of the standard install. You get the main DB server at 36677 and the training DB server at 29999. If you have everything on a laptop with no routine connection to the outside world you get to find these things out.
Obviously, connection to the desired database is with carefully sorted out shortcuts. DOORS is very tolerant, even of other instances of itself. This is also useful for trialling minor versions (for those of us who are paranoid). If you want to be really sure that the upgrade to the next minor version is going to help, then set it up running alongside the 'live' database. No extra hardware required. |

Having a seperate database for each project you manage is a distinct advantage, mainly because projects want to migrate to the next version at differrent times meaning you have to migrate projects seperately, and need lots of dxl to capture and restore access rights for each project, user lists get out of date because you migrate the user list for the initial project and may have added users to the slightly behind projects. When you migrate a whole database you have no such problems.
The only real disadvantage is that muggins can have about 10 million shortcuts, but of cause you can get round this by deleting most of your shortcuts and producing a utility to select project, version, addins etc then fire DOORS using the chosen options. ------------------------- Regards, Richard Good |
