Well, I heard somebody talking about sockets and such today, and the thought popped into my head that, "Hey, DXL has sockets, well....kind of. You could make a chat program!" And so, the attached code.

It's not exactly interactive, and I have quite possibly completely missed some big points, but it does work! Has anybody else played with the IPC functionality in DXL?

I challenge you (yes, YOU) to do better!

I am trying to find a way to utilize this feature to allow a user to send a message to another user who has a module locked. I have all the logic down, the only issue I am running into is that the accept() function ties up the user interface while it is waiting for a connection. Does anyone know of a way to get this to run in the background so that the server can sit and wait for a connection without the user being blocked from doing any work?

I use a trigger on the open of a module to check if it is sharable or exclusive and if it is, it sets up an IPC server and waits for a connection. But since it ties up the user interface to wait it isn't very useful.

Anyone?

If all you're looking for is messaging between users when someone has a lock and someone else needs to edit, they added that exact feature in 8.2.

I'm still looking for documentation regarding that functionality. I'm using DOORS 8.3 and whenever I attempt to open a module that another user has locked for editing, the only options that are offered are "Open in Read Only" or "Cancel".

There was some discussion about that feature in the following forum entry:

https://forum.telelogic.com/customer/doors/messageview.cfm?catid=17&threadid=9100&highlight_key=y&keyword1=locked

I think it must be something that is set at the server level, but again, I haven't found any documentation to support this.

I have 8.3 as well. Whenever I try to open something and someone else has it locked I have the option to send them a message. I didn't have to set anything up to get that functionality.

Chris,

My guess is that you are running DOORS 8.3, but the server is only on 8.0 or 8.1. The server must be at least 8.2 for this feature to work.
