Greetings,

We're trying to import existing Word documents into DOORS using the supplied "Export to DOORS" template added to Word during the DOORS install. This is not real robust and quits part way through our documents. We would like to debug/modify the template so we don't have to make wholesale changes to our documents, but the template appears to be password protected and have gotten the cold shoulder from Sales about getting access to it.

Has anyone else been able to modify this, or have any other suggestions ?

The quick way is to save the MS-Word file as type RTF, then open the DOORS module and import the RTF file.

Louie,

Thanks for the reply, but unfortunately I've been down this road. I was hoping to find a more automated solution which has some intelligence built into it. If you have a large document with lots of formatting and special features in it, even with the RTF format the import can still give less than expected. I've had better luck exporting the document as a text file from Word (removes ALL formatting), then importing as text. That utility has more options to control the conversion, and it even prompted me when it got confused about something, instead of stopping part way through and giving me a message about a section being deleted. The other thing is that it is documented far better than the Word or RTF formats - at least I was able to get my headings/outlines imported as expected.

So, after several weeks waiting for an answer - I was told that most prudent solution for multiple users would be NO. You can not modify the template (the only one that can't be), you must make everyone go through this archaic process to import Word documents. Hopefully this is being addressed in a big way !

Thanks again,
Mark

One reality is the Word has lots of features not supported by DOORS. The other problem is lining up Word Paragraphs the the desired DOORS counterparts. One trick here is to show the "Document Map" in Word: those paragraphs shown in this (left) map are mapped to DOORS Headings; those not shown are mapped to DOORS Object Text. Notice this is NOT the same as mapping Word headings to Object Heading and Word non-headings to Object Text.

For a given Word paragraph, get its Properties Outline level: Body text means map to Object Text; 'Level x' means attempt to map to such a DOORS level.
