Ref: DOORS 7/7.1
I want to clone a module without copying any of the objects or headings, so that I get a new module with all of the views, attributes and types. DOORS provides the option to do this by allowing the user to select only the 'columns' checkbox in the clone section of the clone dialog. However DOORS throws a bunch of DXL error sas a result, and the resultant module does not contain the desired views etc. So based on the procedure support descibed to me, try this: - Edit > Clone - Selected view (if all the views have to be cloned, then use the shift key) - Under the "Clone" section, select "Columns" - Under the "Attribute definitions" section, check the box for "Clone" - Click on "Select" button and select all the attribute definitions (use shift + click to select all) - Similarly, check the box clone and select all the option for the "Attribute types" - Click ok to create the clone I know that your argument will be that there is no structure copied and thus defeats the object of cloning, however if you consider views/attributes/types a part of the module structure then this is a valid use of cloning and one which we wish to use. Also DOORS should not be throwing DXL errors for something it is allowing users to do. I am on DOORS 7.1 build 71132
And wouldnt you know it....it now works fine even though it hasnt worked for a couple of weeks. I can say without hesitation that I have not deviated from my own process either. Will have to keep an eye out on this one. Regards Ian ------------------------- Principle Software Engineer Electrical Engineering Product Development MG Rover Group |

It appears that DOORS was objecting to an attribute name i had chosen. The attribute was 'Body' and its underlying type was an enmeration called 'Body Type' with 4 definition/value pairs 'All'=99, 'Saloon'=1, 'Tourer'=2 , 'Limo'=3.

Ian, you are not going mad!
I just ran some tests on DOORS 7.1 Build 71132 and I have discovered the following. If you are cloning attribute definitions, you MUST also include all the necessary attribute types for enumerations. It is not smart enough to figure this out for itself. Also, if you clone DXL attributes, you must also clone any attributes that are referenced. I didn't test this, but I expect the same applies to attributes referenced in view columns. It is probably best to clone everything and then remove what you don't want. regards ------------------------- Tony Goodman http://www.smartdxl.com |

quote: Just checked on DOORS 7.0 SP1 and it does include types used by attributes when they aren't explicitly selected. Looks like this functionality is lost in DOORS 7.1. Any volounteers for submitting a problem to support? I haven't got 7.1... |
