Here's the situation: I have an employee who is working in a module with RMCD access. It is currently set to Sharing Level 4. He is trying to create a section numbers 3.3.3.2. So he locks section 3.3.3.1, but can only create an object below. He cannot create an object at the same level (control-enter does not work either). So I set the sharing level to level 3 and have him do it again. He still cannot create an object at the same level. The only way he can is to lock section 3.3.3 and create an object below. However, he does not want this module's sharing level set to level 3, it must stay at level 4. So my problem is that why can't he create an object at level 4 with level 4 sharing set?

Hi Matt,

Edit Shareable mode is a weird and wonderful beast for DOORS.

Firstly, before edit-shareable mode is configured, all objects have their access rights set to "inherited" so effectively, all of the objects have exactly the same access rights as the access rights to the module itself.

When you initially set this feature up and choose the level you want to lock at, DOORS goes to each of the heading objects that reside at that level and changes their access rights so that they are specific and no longer coupled (inherited) to the access rights of the next parent object. This allows individual users to essentially "lock-up" access to a section.

When you changed the shareable mode to level 3, the level 4 mode is not removed, so trying to insert a new level 4 object from a level 4 locked section will still not work. You have to lock at level 3 first and then create a new object one-level below. However, this new level 4 object will have it's access rights defaulted to "inherited" so this will prevent it from being lockable when in shareable mode. So unfortunately, you have to open the module in exclusive edit mode and repeat the process for configuring shareable locks at level 4.

I'm afraid that there are some othe pitfalls with this mode - for example - if you add another group to the access rights of the module, members of this group will not be able to use shareable mode because the objects are no longer inheriting their rights from the module so they don't even know that the new group exists. You have to go back and reconfigure shareable mode all over again. I'm sure that Telelogic could provide a less clunky method for configuring and managing shareable locks.

This is not a defect. To create an object you must have edit rights to the parent of that object, not its preceeding sibling. This means you must lock the section that houses the parent.

In your schema all level 4 headings are sections and therefore there is no section that has the level 3 stuff, and thus you cannot lock it. To resolve that I'd make all the level 1 headings shared, as well as all the level 4. Thus if you need to lock something at level 3 or 2 there is a section defined and you can create it.

As the other poster mentioned, the new level 4 object will be inheritied, you would need to edit its rights and make it 'specific' by removing the Inherited flag.
