We have always managed our document exports by custiomizing the original MS Word Document export script made available by telelogic (and it has served us well). However, I now need to add a few more bell and whistles to the exporter and before I do, I would like to ask the question... Has the DOORs 'purchased' exporter, grown more mature than it was 4-5 years ago? It seemed a mess to use back then and also seemed quite limited. (hence we choose to customize the word exporter script)
2nd question... is WEXP and DocExpress the same thing?
thanks all...

Hi Dan -

I have used both products.

There was a version of DocExpress years ago that worked wonders. I don't recall what version number that is but later versions came out that made my DocExpress experience frustrating.

WEXP, a product that I have been using since last year, isn't the same ad DocExpress. Compared to DocExpress I find WEXP much easier to use but I believe it only works with WORD files.

Out of curiousity, what are some of the things that you are trying to achieve with an export that you are unable to with the built-in export?

I also used to customize the document export script and I thought it worked well. I discovered that everyone who had to come ask me to make this or that tweak to the script didn't like it as well.

When we switched to DocExpress/Word, which they could customize themselves without any coding, they were a lot happier. DocExpress/Word is definitely a lot better than it was a few years ago: Users can easily cancel out of a document generation job, no special syntax to remember, etc.

WEXP-like features have been added to DocExpress/Word in version 4.0, with more WEXP features to come. WEXP itself will no longer be enhanced, and it was never supported.

I think DocExpress/Word is worth your time to see the current features.

A few things...
1) We export some documents from multiple modules. We create attribute table modules for tables (since DOORs tables are so problematic). We then merge them into a single document at export.
2) Similarly, in the past, we created multi attribute modules and printed sections from different views based on the setting of a view attribute as I loop thru the module for export. (this is older but I liked it)
3) I also place Module level attribute values (name author, description, time, owner, etc) at bookmark locations in the Export template to create a completed document.
There are a few other tweaks but these are the big ones...
Dan
