OK. Conventional wisdom says to follow a two-step process:
1) create the Linkset in the linkmodule, and 2) go to the Source module, and create the Mandatory Linkset to the target module using the LinkModule from step (1). Well, I wonder: a) Are both steps necessary... could I only do step (2) and be fine? b) If both are necessary, why doesn't DOORS allow the user to auto-create the linkset in the link module (step 1's output) when doing step (2)? If "safety" is a concern, how about popping up a dialog asking whether they are sure..... since the link module exists... I have to populate an entire project of 87 modules with linksets to the same 3 Target modules. I have a script that performs this task on the modules, but it doesn't do so for the Link Module. That command only works for the folder, I see from both the help files and this forum. Any suggestions/help would be appreciated! |

Doors will automaticaly create the linkset when the user attempts to create the first link. The user is prompted to confirm before this happens.
Therefore step one is not strictly necessary. If you set up mandatory linkset pairings then your schema should be safe. I would also recommend creating, and then soft-deleting a link module called "DOORS Links" in every folder of your project. If this module exists but is soft-deleted, this prevents users creating links between modules where a linkset pairing has not been defined. ------------------------- Tony Goodman http://www.smartdxl.com Edited: 3-Jan-2007 at 11:06 by Tony Goodman |

Its very confusing, but defining a 'linkset' via the module's properties window does NOT in fact create a link set. It only creates a 'Default Link Module' aka 'LinkSet Pairing' aka 'LinkModuleDesriptor' piece of information that is theoretically used when you create links. That piece of information, btw, may be accessible via the Module Properties screen but is in fact stored in the module's folder. I believe if you rename the module or move it elsewhere, its lost. Well, 'lost' is not in fact true. Its still stored in the folder in a corrupted manner such that you cannot find it using the normal DOORS interface but is sure to surface and cause pulling of hair and gnashing of teeth two days before some critical milestone of your project. I've got a script somewhere that looks for corrupted LMDs and removes them; but I digress...
There is also considerable confusion over what 'Mandatory' and 'Overwridable' mean; but I do recall this: there are 3 states: 'Mandatory', 'Overwridable', and 'Neither'. IIRC, 'neither' was the desirable state. I did write about this a couple years ago but am too lazy to search the forum History for what I'm sure is an exceptional post on this subject by *ahem* me. We've abandoned this information in favor of a script that manages the links for us. There is also considerable confusion on whether or not the folks who wrote about this feature in the DOORS and the DXL manuals had ever actually tried to use the feature to control their links. My guess is 'no'; but you've probably already figured that out. - Louie |
