How can we create table and figure captions so when the DOORS document is exported into Word, where a table of figures and tables is created just like the table of paragraphs/sections? I hope that this isn't a manual operation that has to be done in Word every time.
Thank You. |

This depends on how you export to Word. If you use WEXP, you just have to set the "WEXP Caption" attribute accordingly.

You can use the "Paragraph Style" attribute by setting it to the Word style that you would like to use when exporting to Word. We use this capability together with Word templates (.dot files) to generate our Word documents. This is an alternative to using Wexp and DocExpress.

Joe is correct as regards the "Paragraph Style" attribute. However, this only helps in getting the caption text formatted in the proper style in the final Word document. It does not create the field codes required for the list of figures. It would, however, be possible to write a Word macro which inserts the field codes in the correct places.

The key here I think, is to create the correct 'Styles' in the word template, so for instance just as you would have one word style for 'Body Text', create a style called 'Figure Caption' or similar. You then ensure all your captions in DOORS have the correct Paragraph Style equating to 'Figure Caption'. From there, you can use standard word routines to create a list of captions based on the styles.
Hope this helps, if not reply back and I will try to expand. ------------------------- Andrew Tagg Thales Air Systems, Melbourne Australia. andrew.tagg@thalesatm.com |

I'm still not sure how you set the figure or table captions in DOORS so it will export that same style when exported to a Word document. Which menu option do I select in DOORS?

Display the Paragraph Style attribute.
If no styles have been alllocated it will be blank. Where a style has been defined it will have something like:- <Object Text:Table Caption> Where Object Text is the attribute, and Table Caption is style you want to apply. If your document is imported from word these may already set (to mishmash of styles), entries made in DOORS will normally be empty. Identify your captions, assign the style you want to use, and export. If you want different styles for other attributes of the object then include them as a comma seperated list :- <Object Text:Requirement Style>, <Rationale:Rationale Italic> (that works in wexp, haven't tried the inbuilt export) Provided the styles are defined in Word they will be assigned to the paragraphs, if not defined the paras will have 'normal' style. (Which is a quick way to find unstyled paragraphs). In Word you can set it up to generate tables and indexes from the table and figure captions you have defined. (re P.Albert comment) ==== As general process comments a) if I have imported a document that will later be reexported I remove any imported paragraph styles, (a simple dxl loop will do that) b) Styles for exported documents are restricted to a limited set defined in Company Templates. Avoid using the built in styles except for the Headings, if you don't want to define your own set from scratch at least define names and base them on the existing styles. c) all objects have the paragraph style defined, even the Headings Hope that helps, even if a bit more than you asked. |

Well, the problem is I have over 50 tables (represented as objects in DOORS). When I export the document to word, the format is ok, but at the bottom of the figure, where I specify "Figure 1:.....", and "Figure 2:...." and so on, this text gets exported as is. The issue is, in the table of contents (in word), I have to manually change specify that I have a figure, and specify each of the figures and numbering manually.
What I like to know is, does DOORS or word have the intelligence to determine that is exported is actually a figure, and update the table of contents (and the numbering) in word, automatically? |

What I forgot to mention (as its buried in a post export tidy up macro) is that you also need to remove the auto inserted Figure and Caption entries made by Word when they were exported by DOORS.
Unfortunately it's counted as company IPR so I can't share it, in essence it will a) Create index tables of the Tables and Figures at start of document b) then for each entry in the index tables follow the hyperlink and delete the destination line. Then providing the 'Figure ...' text has its own unique style you should be able to configure word to create a table of figures. (Insert Menu, Index and Tables, Figures tab: set the style to your defined style.) |

Hi Robert,
When you say 'remove the auto inserted figure and caption entries', do you mean that I need to manually delete these entries in the word document? or DOORS? |

In Word.
You may not get get them, my Word template has AutoCaptioning enabled for the image types I use. (Insert menu: Caption item: AutoCaption Button, de/select items that match your figure types.) As stated before configure Word to generate tables and indexes from the table and figure caption styles you have defined. (Insert Menu: Index and Tables item: Table of Figures tab) ==== Use a Word macro to tidy up, it will it quicker than you will by hand. |
