I've been getting an unusual error. In both DOORS 7.1 and 8.1, when I export a particular MS Word document into DOORS, the text of each object is repeated back-to-back.
For example, the headings look like this: 1 FirstTitle FirstTitle 1.1 SecondTitle SecondTitle And the object text looks like this: Body Text.Body Text. Interestingly, if the object heading is terminated with a closing parenthesis ")", the heading text repetition no longer is separated by a whitespace character. E.g., for heading "Title Example (test)" the following would result: 1 Title Example (test)Title Example (test) I have not had this problem before; yet when I try to import other MS Word documents that have worked in the past the same error occurs. (Most frustrating, since I can recall no change at all in my DOORS installation from the last time I have used it 'til now.) I do have both DOORS 7.1 and 8.1 installed concurrently (although I did before as well, without this problem). Any ideas? I can use a .dxl script to chop off the duplication in the meantime...but perhaps a clean installation of the product would suffice. |

Laura,
I was going to recommend trying it from another machine. Also, you may just need to replace your doors.dot file with one from the another working machine. That is certainly better than a needless reinstall.... ------------------------- Kevin Murphy http://www.baselinesinc.com The Requirements Management Experts |

The Word export to DOORS template works only for the correct DOORS version. If you have two versions of DOORS and figure to export from Word to both then you must have both importers ..err.. word exporters installed.
Look for all instances of 'doors.dot' on your computer. You should find one in the v71 and the v81 DOORS install directorires, perhaps c:\Program Files\Telelogic\DOORS 7.1\etc. You should also find at least one in the location Word Expects; I don't recall the default but its likely different on your machine. [1] Open Word, Tools >Templates and Addins and remove the DOORS.dot reference. Exit Word. [2] Delete the doors.dot in the Word expected location; that should be the same one you just removed from inside word. [3] copy the v7.1 doors.dot file and paste (a copy) into the Word Expected location. Rename it 'DOORS-v71.dot'. [4] Start Word, Tools >Templates and Addins and add a new template, navigate to it. [5] Copy the v8.1 doors.dot to the Expected location named 'doors-v81.dot'. [6] add that template in Word. Now when you export from Word you should see two export options, pick the right one. IIRC, you need to cleverly name the menu options so you can tell which is which, I don't recall how to do that. - Louie |

The doors.dot file does not appear to be the culprit. I have tried using a fresh copy from my program/doors/lib location, as well as trying a copy from a co-worker with a working version of DOORS, but to no avail... Any other suggestions before I re-install?
Thanks, -Laura |

Desperation brain-storming: [] Maybe Revisions are on but invisible in the source module. Try accepting them all then turning it off. [] Maybe the 'outline level' of all paragraphs is some Heading, instead of 'body text'. You can check that by looking at the paragraph properties in Word, its on the right about 1/3 from the top of that dialog. [] Check import options.

I think the problem is having two separate DOORS versions on the same machine.
There are still a few questions to ask here. 1. Does this happen in both DOORS 8.1 and DOORS 7.1 on your machine? 2. The coworker that gave you the new DOORS.dot file, did they use 8.1 or 7.1? 3. Have you tried more than one source document? Is this consistent between documents? A reinstall is probably the best option--but uninstall both versions, then after you have one version installed, don't install the other version until you've tested to see that an import works correctly. ------------------------- Kevin Murphy http://www.baselinesinc.com The Requirements Management Experts |
