Hi All,
I am trying to find out the opinions from other users, who have an experience with ReqPro from IBM. The web site says that the requirement management process is well served by this tool. Before I install this tool for testing (free for 15 days only), I would like to know the following: 1. Has this tool got the history records like DOORS? 2. Can we control the access rights at the attribute (and object level) as in DOORS? 3. I understand that this has the same feature as DOORS for floating licenses. 4. Has ReqPro got any additional features that DOORS does not have, or missing any features that DOORS has? I'd apperciate a feedback from the users who used (or are using) ReqPro and DOORS. - Krishna |

Never used ReqPro myself, my understanding though is that it uses Word to some extent.
I will say though over the last couple months I've received several inquiries for short term contracts to migrate a company's requirements from ReqPro to DOORS..... Don't know if that's saying much for the tool. ------------------------- Scott Boisvert Engineering Tools Administrator L-3 Communications - Avionics Systems scott.boisvert@l-3com.com |

It all depends what you want to do. I have used MSAccess and RTM in the past. I've been using DOORS for a few years. I have access to ReqPro for some projects.
DOORS has the best user GUI and flexibility via dxl. If you just want a requirement database that undergoes a few edits and limited analysis, then ReqPro is ok. ReqPro has limited import/export options. If someone does not have ReqPro and they need to edit a user-defined attribute, the process to update the database is very manual. I avoid using Reqpro. |

Hi Krishna,
I've provided answers answer to your four questions below. I'm currently working for a client who uses ReqPro. The last time I used ReqPro was back in 2001 - I have to say that it hasn't improved much since then where-as DOORS has improved a lot in comparison. 1. Has this tool got the history records like DOORS? Yes it does but DOORS manages and presents the history information in a much better way. 2. Can we control the access rights at the attribute (and object level) as in DOORS? Yes, but it does it at a global level only. DOORS gives you much more flexibility to apply access rights for attributes at the document (module) level. In fact the Access Rights features of DOORS are far superior to ReqPro right across the board. 3. I understand that this has the same feature as DOORS for floating licenses. Yes, both DOORS and ReqPro have floating license options but this would be a minor consideration w.r.t. a purchasing decision. 4. Has ReqPro got any additional features that DOORS does not have, or missing any features that DOORS has? The ReqPro integration with MSWord is held up as a "killer" feature but I hate it. It's terribly flaky, it doesn't support the display of attribute values and is just plain prone to the introduction of errors. DOORS is superior w.r.t. access rights management, traceability, configuration & change management. The new Traceline feature puts DOORS way ahead of ReqPro. It's difficult and not practical to give a critique of feature Vs feature between these two toolS here. All I can say is that I don't understand the mentality behind the way in which ReqPro is structured - it just seems to legitimise some bad practices. ReqPro is not suitable for large complex projects - it's possibly OK for small projects and small teams only. ------------------------- Paul Miller Specification Practices Specialist EuroCyber Melbourne, Australia Mobile: + 61 (0) 418 135 103 http://www.eurocyber.biz |

Hi All,
Thanks a lot for the detailed replies to my queries. This discussion will help us to realize that we have the best tool in our hands and how we can utilize its capabilities depends on us. - Krishna |

One other point I'd like to make: IBM purchased Telelogic, and one of the major reasons they did so is because of DOORS. When a competitor buys out your product, that says quite a bit about your product.
