I'm going to move my Database Server from a Solaris environment over to a Red Hat Linux environemt. Running the Database Server is a cinch. However, I also like to have a local client that I can use when I working directly on the Server. I now see that there is no Linux Client *AT ALL*!!! I find this distressing. Furthermore, I see no documentation or discussion as to why it disappeared between version 8.2 and version 8.3.

Some one please don't tell me that Telelogic platform support is going backwards to Windows only, instead of moving forward to more user choice? This is going to be sad to news to the Govt. programs I support that are now being instructed to develop on Linux instead of Windows. Using Terminal Server or Citrix is not an acceptable option. They will not be able to do requirements management ( a big part of every project we have) on the machine that they are working on!!!!

I am afraid Roger that DOORS 8.3 (and later) clients are windows only.

The rationale for this is to allow support for windows vista and other user interface improvements. This is mentioned in DOORS 8.3 Readme

Thnanks for the feedback Tony. I've read the readme and while I see all of the updates related to further Windows development, I don't see any explanation or rationale to dump a client that some companies have been using for quite a while. (UNIX or Linux). I've been working Engineering applications support for over 20 years, and never have I been cut off like this from any paid product without some sort of Life Cycle announcement. This is very bad!

I underdstand the tight integration with MS applications and API's but if Telelogic thinks that this is the only platform that program requirements will need to be tracked on, they are sadly mistaken. Some programs I support do not use any MS products at all, but, they still have a contractual obligation to track / update requirements. The engineers should be able to use that client on the development platform. It looks like I'll need analternative requirements tool and perhaps fewer seats for DOORS. This would in deed be sad and very un-welcome. We have been working very hard to stop from having to transfer data from platform to platform simply to satisfy documentation needs. Tools like DOORS should be fexible, and at the very least, there should be a full blown Web Client (not DOORSNet) that would still allow the Engineer to work in a familiar environment on the Development platform. Other forward moving client applications I support are doing just that.

I know it's not quite the same thing, but Telelogic, an IBM Company, is supposedly including a Web client with DOORS 9.

If implemented correctly, this will allow any platform to connect.

The DOORS client has been long in the tooth for about 8 years now. It needs an upgrade, and since the majority of clients use Windows, I am actually in favor of dropping the X11 support in order for a better end user experience on the Windows side. I do think they probably should have waited for DOORS 9 before dropping *NIX support, though.

Also, VMWare has really gained in popularity, so you could always try it on your server to get a DOORS client on the server itself. Not ideal, but certainly a workaround.
