Hi,
Our specification modules include a DXL layout column that looks at the object number, converts it and displays it as a paragraph number (it basicaly just gets rid of the ugly dashes in the object number). Users would like to insert cross reference to these para numbers but of course they have to enter them as hard text and these become invalid when new para's or a section of work are added in subsequent change cycles. In MSWord, you can insert a linked cross reference field that can be configured to display the current para number - DOORS unfortunately doesn't support embedded fields/macro's within text and inserting hard text cross ref's are just plain old error proned. Can DXL help here anyone? Using the UID as a form of cross reference is only OK if you have DOORS in front of you - many recipients of a spec only get to see the hard copy so UID's are out because they can be hard to find in a hard copy. Para numbers follow a logical sequence and are easier to locate in a hard copy. ------------------------------------------ Paul Miller Tenix Specification Practices Project, Project Web Site: http://tnetdev/Group/KM/Doors/ Nelson House, Williamstown, Victoria, Australia, 3016. Perhaps, if you create links back to the specification rather than typing in any value at all, and then add a DXL column in the document which references the spec. to follow the link and retrieve the Section Heading or any necessary information from the spec itself..... ------------------------- Nandan Banodkar (nandanbanodkar@hotmail.com) |

Paul,
You have hit on a highly emotive subject here. I have persuaded the team that I work with (outside of DOORS), to make use of the Object ID. My standard output format has in a small font 'Prefix_nnnn' on the line preceding every object (nnnn is absolute number). I then have the main column contents followed by any other relevant attributes (modified html exporter, squeezed into MS Word and then usually printed to pdf). Non-DOORS users will complain that this looks a little odd to start with, but it is worth persevering. One of the really useful features of DOORS and similar tools is that a unique identification is allocated to every requirement. When these people come to query a document they soon become used to giving this magic reference number which seems to mean so much to me. I then answer queries more efficiently, the version of the document matters less, and even other users find it helpful because the Acrobat or Word search facilities are equally capable of finding the numbers. As for the hard copy, paragraph numbers could be referenced as an additional clue - if the id number does not match, it is often easy to guess where to try next if this was caused by insertion/deletion. It must be made clear that the id number is the master information, and paragraph numbers are supplementary and not to be carried between versions. Quality Assurance departments will approve of this approach, because you can use the words 'Traceability' and 'Audit Trail' when explaining it to them. I could go on (and on...)
