We've been struggling to come up with an effective way to deal with documents which, for whatever reason, will not be imported/parsed into DOORS modules. We've had some people embed or link them as OLEs within a DOORS module, but then the performance of DOORs degrades. We've tried pointing to them with the URL convention (file:///x:/server/directory/file), but if anything in the path has a space in it, the link doesn't work and our users find it difficult to come up with the DOS names of the paths.

What are other folks out there in DOORS land doing about this?

Let me babble:

[] You can always just type in the name of the file (do NOT insert an OLE link), and it would be the user's responsibility to open the file manually.

[] When I embedd a linked file, it shows up as an Icon. File names with spaces don't seem to cause a problem. I couldn't find the option that defines that.

[] In other tools, you can surround a file system or HTML reference with double quots " " or carots < >, in order to insure integrety of the name. Try <c:\My File> or "c:\My File" instead of c:\My File.

Hi Louie,

Thanks for the response. Some questions for you:

Q: When you embed a file and show just the icon, do you know if it makes a difference in performance? That is, do the icons take up less space than when you display the entire file?

Q: If there is a file a c:/my documents... that I want to point to using the URL format, we have found that DOORS doesn't like the fact that there is a space between 'my' and 'documents'. You haven't found the same to be true? Did using the <> characters help?

Thanks!

Well, after expirimenting with v6 it turns out I have no idea what I'm talking about. However, I didn't have any trouble inserting a file nor inserting a link to a file in 'My Documents'. I edited the Object Text, the >>Insert>>OLE Object>>Create from File...

We use hyperlinks to reference documents outside DOORS, but only to the document, if you are using DOORS 7 and Windows 2000 you should be able to link to bookmarks within MS Word documents. The problem is that certain characters in filenames are not recognised by Windows and they must be replaced by their hex code, the problem characters are
    Character Hex Code
      space %20
        comma %2C
          semi-colon %3B
            right-parenthesis %29

I've enclosed the tool that allows you to select which text or string attribute you want to insert the hyperlink into. It also replaces the problem characters with hex code.

It has a few shortcomings as I could not get http to work and it will need to be revised to manage Word Bookmarks - any takers!

            Kind Regards

            John,

Thanks for the very helpful reply. One question, though: If there is a space in the path name, say My Documents, doesn't the hyperlink break? We find that it does. We are using v. 6 of DOORS (wish we could get to 7). Is there a recommended way to deal with this that you know of?

            Thanks!

The tool that I provided manages all the spaces in the path name irrespectively of the number of spaces in the path. The tool searches for the spaces and inserts %20 in its place. The hyperlink string looks a bit messy but it works.

            Kind regards
