Our company will be getting into a situation where many people will need to have DOORS installed. Our IBM support team took our installation procedures and created an installation package to push DOORS installation. This is necessary because most employees do NOT have administrative rights to their computers so they would need some with administrative rights to do the installation. Additionally we find a push necessary because there are hundreds to thousands of people who would potentially get DOORS, and feel having someone going directly to desktops time consuming.
Two problems we've seen with the push are 1.) The DOORS.dot file is not copied to the proper STARTUP group so the Export to Word smarticon doesn't appear in WORD.... and 2.) The HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT isn't updated to point to the correct doorsdxl.tlb file. We're working with the IBM folks to update the installation to make sure these are copied appropriately. My question is, are there other large companies out there that install DOORS remotely, or do you all actually do DOORS installations right at all the desktops. I'd be interested in hearing from any companies that have more than 700 potential end users. Thanks ------------------------- Brenda Heiss Cornell |

I'm on the engineering "Light side" of DOORS rather than the IT "Dark side", so I don't know how they do it. But I do know there's [1] some sort of "Silent install" that appears to be the normal install procedure where the parameters are automatically inserted. It somehow fills in the install dialog with the appropriate info and automically hits the Next button. [2] We use an "SMS Package" that I believe is some sort of compiled version of the install.
I suspect but don't know: [1] that creating a Silent Install is more intuitive and easier to create, but requires logging into the computer (remotely allows), causing each install to be done manually. [2] SMS pushes out faster and I believe can be queued up and executed by Windows itself, something like automatic Virus protection upgrades or Microsoft Security patches. I believe that patching an install requires the same procedure as the original install; don't SMS the install and figure to patch it with a Silent (or manual) patch procedure. We had a nightmare getting the SMS to work here, for reasons only our IT representitives understand ..err.. don't understand. Although I wasn't supposed to, I ended up fixing a bunch of installs in our building. - Louie |

Hi.
InstallShield silent install is supported in DOORS 8, and I think DOORS 7.1. This means you can create an installer that will not need user interaction, since your settings are recorded when you create the installer - see Install guide around page 10. You could then potentially have this available on something like Radia - at this point my knowledge dries-up - think maybe Radia needs msi files created, which is then not supported by telelogic? In our company we use a web page with the new DOORS 8.0 exe link. A mass email is sent out with the new server name and port. Instruction on how to use the DOORS Configuration Tool was provided. In that way each user was armed with enough information to make the ugrade a minor issue. I had 70 users and had 3 help requests. The same was done with the DOORS 8.0 patches.

Working for the "dark side" some years ago, we used SMS packages to remotely install DOORS.
My new 'large company' uses Metaframe, and so install DOORS on server only. ------------------------- E. Piallat CeBeNetwork Edited: 16-May-2006 at 13:37 by Eric Piallat |

Being in the Dark Side (as they say) I just rolled out DOORS 8.0 to over 300 desktops with almost no issues. (IE: 99.98%) correct delivery. I used install shield to build my silent installer and then I used a GPO in A.D. to deliver it to the users in the respective OU. The reason I used AD is that the software can be delivered using elevated priv's. negating the need for the Admin rights (which we would never give to the average employee).
If you can't use AD for delivery then SMS is the only way that I know to have a successful roll out with little issues. I've been providing upgrades for the past 3 versions (and patches) the last one was definitely the best.
BTW I also infused the latest DOORS Patch so that i only needed one roll out and delivered a package that was 100% useable fro all DOORS functions.
Hope this helps others.
