Is there a repository available to store the .dxl scripts I've written that I'd like to share?
Is there any ftp server available?
What about a code repository ala CVS?

Not that I know of, but the need is certainly there. Telelogic has not done so because of the liability issues. They don't want to put their name to scripts they didn't write and test.

One solution is to post DXL as attachments to this forum.

Last year at the UGC, I volunteered to fund and create a DXL site, but I never received any feed back from the moderator of the DXL SIG. I can't promise to debug and test each post, but I can provide a central repository to store and categorize DXL from the user community.

If I get a few positive responses to this post, I'll plan on putting together a site.

Hi all.

I mean this is a very good idea, to build a repository.
I discussed this with our Telelogic Consultant/Error-Expert Benjamin Blersch.
He means also, that this will be a good idea, but there is no time and money (from Telelogic) to implement this.
We also had implement some scripts for convenience our DOORS environment (Wordexports, RTF-Exports, Traceability, Metrics, input-mask, ...).
And I have begun to write a DXL-Library (i.e. "objects.lib" with some object-relevant functions).
And, I think, if the (or some) scripts are shared and develloped continuously from more than one person, the bugs will be corrected and the functionality will grow.

dirk.

Michael,

I encourage the central repository idea. Though I do not know the scope of the repository, we might consider using a CVS-style project from places similar to SourceForge etc. If we are looking for a free (relatively) place to put things out, Yahoo! groups does have a central storage area for their group members. I believe it looks and works just like FTP access and has a discussion group to go with it. Though we could just ignore the discussion group thing and post all our messages on this forum.

I am delighted to see the updated forum Telelogic has recently released.

Hi,

Originally this forum was intended to be a repository for DXL scripts, however, it has evolved into a DXL Q&A forum - which is no bad thing

It may be possible to provide either:

  • another forum to act as a DXL code repository

  • create a user based DXL repository similar to the DXL Utilities area

In some respects i could see this replacing the DXL utilities area which has unfortunatly fallen out of use and would be better supported by you, the user community.
I would appreciate any requirements (features) you would like for a DXL Repository, especially any examples of how this has been implemented elsewhere. Please post post them here or email me directly

Steve,

As rg pointed out YahooGroups is the best way. It is one central place which can be used as a forum, repository, calendar, live chat, database, polls, everything in one place.

Steve,

I do have a question before I venture much further into creating a CVS-style project (say on SourceForge or CVS.org etc.) What are the proper intellectual property rights Telelogic has governing the distributuion of DXL scripts? In short, are there any special considerations we need to take into account before setting up an "open source" forum for DXL library utilities?

I know SourceForge maintains that the project must be "open source" in nature in order to be established and hosted for free.

Hi Steve,

Here's some contributing requirements for a DXL repository - these are not intended to be absolutely complete but may help to stir some creative juices for a more complete specification.

01. DXL Authors shall be able to update or remove scripts that they have previously submitted based on access rights attributed against a login profile.

02. DXL scripts shall be labelled with a brief name (rather than just being identified by filename).

03. DXL scripts shall be categorised by the Author to assist with search / sort / filter operations - sample categories could be:- DXL Layout, DXL Attribute, DXL Trigger, DXL Administration Level (scripts only used by Adminstrators and DB Managers), DXL User Level (Scripts used by all DOORS users), DXL Templates, DXL Other.

04. Users shall be able to search / sort / filter on DXL Name, DXL Filename, DXL Author, Date of submission, DXL Category, version of DOORS tested on, *.dxl or *.inc extensions, any text string within a DXL file, any compound patterns of text and characters using regular expressions (some of these items would of course be "attributes" of each submission).

05. Users shall be able to perform a multiple selection of DXL scripts and download them as a batch rather than one script at a time (This is a deficiency of many other open source sites)

I am voting for the repository. It will be very helpful not only for the current user community, but for all new users. The idea of a public domain sounds great, because it will be easily accessible from anywhere. Doina

Pete,

Not yet. I'd still like to tackle it. The main thing I have been searching for is some web-based software. There are plenty of free discussion board software packages available (such as the one used by Telelogic to drive this discussion forum), but without serious customization they don't seem to fit the special need of sharing and organizing scripts (see Paul's requirements above). There are some configuration management packages out there, but they seem to be overkill and too complicated for what we are trying to achieve.

I'm confident the repository won't be useful without the ability to search scripts and organize scripts by function (traceability scripts, filter scripts, etc.)

I'm still willing to fund, maintain, and moderate the repository, but without the proper software it won't happen. I don't have the time to "roll my own" or heavily customize someone else's software.

If anyone has a piece of software that they think will do the trick, please let me know.

Michael:

I'll keep my eyes posted for such software but I think in the meantime we can have some type of temporary repository such as at yahoo groups. What do you think?

Thanks,
Pete

Pete,

I'd rather not set up a temporary repository. Let's either do this right, or just encourage people post scripts to this forum.

Pete,

Of the available free discussion board forums, phpbb seems to be the best. I evaulated it couple of months ago.

I'm still not sure a discussion forum is what we are looking for. Setting up our own would allow for more forums, but I don't think more is better in that respect.

If we were to use phpbb, how would it be set up and structured? What advantage would we have over what we already have here?

Hello,

Did either of you guys ever end up setting this up?  The last post here was over two years ago...

Kendra,

Back in 2002, I said "I am willing to fund, maintain, and moderate the repository." I did not end up setting up a repository for DXL Scripts, because we couldn't find software that would act as an adequate repository.

I currently do not have the time to donate to such an activity, but I am still willing to fund the web site and purchase (reasonably priced) software, as long as the repository would meet the criteria that Paul Miller and I have previously stipulated. We would need people such as yourself to moderate and organize the repository.

At risk of being told you've already checked it out, have you looked at SubVersioN? It's an open source version control package, available from Tigris. It also has a windows client: TortoiseSVN.
And for commenting on the existing content, perhaps BugZilla?

And having thrown in my suggestion, I will run away and hide in a safe corner until everything is up and running...
