I have a quick question for all of you. So far, I have learned almost all of my DXL scripting from the 2003 version of Telelogic's DXL reference manual for DOORS 7.0 SP1. The manual is excellent, for the most part. The significantly large section on dialog boxes appears to be the problem. The material in this section is very confusing. It makes a lot of assumptions on the knowledge of the user. Furthermore, there is no logical sequence of elements in this section and one section does not build on the previous one. I was wondering if any of you recommend an alternate resource for the "dialog boxes" section DXL scripting. Responses to my post will be highly appreciated. Thank you.

Would a code example do? Look in lib/dxl/example, e.g. the file ddbintro.dxl contains almost all dialog box functions in one code file. The treeview.dxl contains an example on how to build up a treeview DBE and tab_example.dxl has tab's and frames in dialog boxes.

Thank you very much for your prompt response. I will take a look at the files that you mentioned and I hope it will clarify my understanding of DXL scripting that relates to dialog boxes. Once again, thank you for your prompt response.

The DXL manual is not a text book nor any sort of users manual. Its a reference manual that explains what each function does. Having said that, yes there is some useful explanatory verbiage but its pretty sparce. Test by fire is about the only way to figure out what the functions do in the strange cases; which functions abort with bad input and which return normally.

Thus, you would not really expect one section to 'build' on a previous section although its laid out rather reasonably.

As for Dialog Boxes ... yes its all still confusing. Wait till you start choriographing your boxes with constrained placement; putting dbeA to the right of dbeB will often produce odd results depending on what types the dbes are. Even after all these years I still finish my placement with trial-and-error, psuedo-randomly intermixing 'beside-unnatached-flush-yaddy-yaddy' until it works.
