Has anyone run across the need (or existing DXL that does such) to update a DOORS module using a Word document? In other words, lets say a customer gives you a doucment to import into DOORS using Word and you do so. Call that Rev 1. Now they give you Rev 1.1 via Word and there may be many or few changes. I'm looking for anything existing that will take the Rev 1.1 Word doc and update the existing DOORS modules (based on Rev 1 Word doc) with the changes reflected in Rev 1.1 Word doc (via Word import). Long shot, but thought I'd ask. |

At least you have Word documents, often I get them in PDF so even importing becomes a trick.
That, IMO, is the billion dollar question in DOORS. I too would love to see something like this, but I have never heard of anything. The only thing I've managed to do is to Word Differences and then manually update the module. Just the other day I was discussing with a prime contractor this same problem, and was bemoaning the fact that why can't you just give me your DOORS database, or at least the module. But the answer we got back was that they need to deliver "the paper document". There are not processes and procedures in place to handle such a delivery. We generate documents automatically from DOORS. I encourage the projects to append the identifier on each requirement. If the suppliers of the document did such a thing, then perhaps a method to align between revisions would exist. Frank Lipski |

[1] The problem with automatically updating it is that you cannot tell which new "paragraphs" in the MS-Word file are associate with which "objects" in the DOORS module. Using the paragraph number is very dangerous since any moves or inserts in EITHER location will change the paragraph numbers. [2] The other problem, of course, is if you have modified both locations; would you want to ERASE the new DOORS text if the MS-Word text has also changed?
[1] The way to get them aligned is to EXPORT the DOORS document to a comma separated "spread sheet", insuring the "Absolute Number" is one of the exported columns. Edit the Spread Sheet. To resync, import the spread-sheet defining the "Absolute Number" as the "key". This method requires abandoning the MS-Word file once its imported, and getting the customer to agree. This method also requires over-coming the problem associated with Objects that contain quotes, commas, tabs, and Returns. [2] Its impractical to attempt to do this. Procedurally EITHER DOORS or MS-Word contains the original; don't change the other. - Louie |
