I would like to hear from other enterprise users who communicates and manages multi-site/multi-server environments. I am currently developing a process that will involve multiply companies throughout USA and Europe. A Single server is out of the question. The question is how can I manage the flow of requirements so that all sites' databases are current? To complicate the process a little more - both my server and an European server must contain the same information/databases. They will basically serve as the master. We, each, have subcontractors that will maintain a subset of the requirements on their own servers.
Questions: 1) What enternational/multi-site/multi-server process are you using? 2) Will Partition/rejoin work in this environment; if not, what will? Simple Architecture flow diagram: --------------------- USA ---------------------------------EUROPE----------------------------------- contractors <------> My Server<=====> European Server <-------> Prime <-----> subcontractor ^ Client Proj partition Module | Module | Partition | Partition Subcontractor |<-----> Subcontactor |<-----> Subcontractor Bill Lutz Reguirement Manager, NASA/GSFC |

Hi William,
I'm the DOORS DBA for a large company spread all over Ausralia and have a similiar need - investigations to date indicate that the DOORS DB architecture does not support multi-site services where two or more remotely located DB's look like one logical DB to the user (Products like Rational's ClearCase do this extremely well although the cost of multi-site licensing is close to prohibitive). Partition and Rejoin will not work as this will prevent editing of the modules at the so called Home DB and at any rate - this feature is not easily automated and is a critical operation so you'll end up spending a large proportion of your time attending to synch and rejoin operations. We've had to opt for remote access to a central server - the corporate WAN provides between 256KB and 2 MB's of bandwidth to the various offices. Performance on the 2MB's link is OK but very slow on the 256 KB links. DOORSNet can also be useful for accessing a DB via a browser but should be viewed as being a very lightweight version of the fully blown DOORS client and suffers from all of the usual performance problems associated with runnng an application over http. ------------------------------------------ Paul Miller Tenix Specification Practices Project, Tenix Strategy & Development, Nelson House, Williamstown, Victoria, Australia, 3016. William,
I have heard from others that using a Citrix (or equivalent) server solution has worked for them. DOORS will support the use of Citrix with DOORS v6.0 SR1 and above. There should be a "Using_DOORS_on_Citrix.txt" file available from Telelogic. ------------------------- Michael Sutherland michael@galactic-solutions.com http://galactic-solutions.com |

We are using Citrix with a customer in the UK. It's not like working off of your own desktop, but it does the job.

Citrix has the big advantage that module loads are done on the (remote) server, and the client only sees screen shots and issues keyboard and mouse commands. Crude measurments a few years ago resulted in finding that a screen shot of an open module takes about 1/6th as many bytes as the open module itself; and invisibly open modules (such as your linked partners) is done COMPLETELY on the server and takes no band width at all.
The main problem with Citrix is that its difficult to import/export stuff at the Client. And its noticably (but tolerably) slower than normal Client access. Remote access via Citrix is vastly superior to trying to keep divergent databases in sync via archive-restore or partition-rejoin. - Louie |

As one of the customers that Ben works with I can say we are very happy with our Citirx deployment and it's working across a truly global network (China/Germany/UK/US in several locations). Speed issues with working aren't too bad, but be aware that OLE operations involving Word are processor hogs, for example when someone exports a document using WEXP, it'll use all available resource on that Citrix Server until complete - not good for the load balancing.
Another consideration (dependent on the functional needs for your requirements system) would be doors extended team, in the near future it should be able to support multi-database addressing, but it doesn't have all the functionality of full blown doors. ------------------------- Graham Stradling, Alcatel-Lucent. |

So far, the local word does not find the remote Doors, and launches a local DOORS client. Likewise, I have the same problem with using a local Popkin System Architect, going to a remote CITRIX-served DOORS. Does anyone know the various local client and/or CITRIX server configuration magic to enable local/remote application linking? Thanks for any help you can provide. Hello John,
I have been informed by the vendor that: " You need to have both DOORS and MS Word installed on the same Citrix Server. Also, any templates or macros, must be installed on the Citrix box where both Word and DOORS are installed. " I hope that helps. regards, Alan TSUJI Boeing Australia Ltd |
