Just had my first look at DOORS 8.3 and it looks really good,
Not sure about the white background on the toolbars. The new support tool looks very useful. ------------------------- Tony Goodman http://www.smartdxl.com Edited: 12-Nov-2007 at 13:34 by Tony Goodman |

DOORS 8.3 has resolved a long standing issue with DOORS 8.1 and 8.2 regarding the temporary work area defined by "localdata" which was not accessable by all users due to local admin rights. This entry is no longer defined, I presume it uses the windows environment variable temp.

Doesn't some of the DOORS 8.3 user interface look like DOORS XT? I mean some of the icons and the thicker changer bars on objects.
I played with 8.3 for a few hours. It seems a little bit faster but this is just by observation. For example, I copied and pasted a single module that has 500,000+ links associated with it. It completed within 10 minutes. I haven't checked to see if the copied module did indeed have all the links copied. ------------------------- pete.kowalski(at)motorola.com Edited: 12-Nov-2007 at 20:29 by Pete Kowalski |

Just noticed the new feature which enables scrolling by line rather than object. This is great for large objects but layout dxl columns disappear as you start to scroll then are redrawn when you stop. Solution was to convert layout dxl to an attribute.
Guess this is because layout dxl is dynamically refreshed. ------------------------- - Martin Edited: 13-Nov-2007 at 13:33 by Martin Hunter |

The way it's been explained to me is that DOORS 8.2 was the last version to support UNIX platforms. Apparently the need to support UNIX platforms has placed enormous constraints on what level of improvements could be made to the DOORS GUI. So hopefully DOORS 8.3 represents the start of many more improvements to the GUI - like an interactive graphical view of modules and their link relationships, that would be nice, hint hint Telelogic!

Bug just identified by a user where last line of object text is sometimes not displayed. Text appears when editing object but disappears when another object is selected.
This phenomenon only appears to happen on certain objects with specific display schemes. I've sent the details off to Telelogic along with screen shots and video using the generate Support Request tool. Is anyone else experiencing this phenomenon? ------------------------- - Martin |

I would be happy to try to replicate it if you expand on your "certain objects with specific display schemes.

Les,
We have several custom display schemes, I personnally use a scheme with larger fonts but this phenomenon appears for several users each with different display schemes. I have yet to determine why certain objects hide some text and others don't, it appears to be completely random. Usually the only way of spotting it is to edit the object text however once I've found an object it is repeatable for that view. Changing the column width unhides the text of an affected object but this action may well affect another object. I've tried it on several modules and it doesn't take long to find an affected object by double clicking an object then scrolling down through the objects using the down arrow key and looking at the bottom of the object to see if an additional line of text appears then disappears. FYI I have not upgraded our server and am still running DOORS server 8.1 I have not heard back from Telelogic yet so presume they are still investigating this phenomenon. ------------------------- - Martin |

Martin did you have to do anything other than install the 8.3 client to get it to run with your 8.1 server? I installed the 8.3 client but its giving me a license file error when I try to open DOORS. Luckily I saved my 8.1 installation elsewhere since the 8.3 install removed it.

David,
We currently have several database servers running different versions of DOORS. DOORS 8.2 required a new license running on the latest license server v1.3 which I updated several months ago. Some of the documentation for DOORS 8.3 states a new license is required for DOORS 8.3 but when I sent our licenses off for update they informed me that our existing 8.2 license would work fine. Since this the online readme documentation on the download site has been corrected, I think the installation guide is still in error. Sounds like you simply need to get a new license from Telelogic, they have always returned mine back to me the same day. If your not using the latest version of the license server then this will also need updating. Reading a new license with the same license server only meant stopping the service for a very short time but from what I can remember I had to uninstall the old license server before installing the new version so this took a little longer. ------------------------- - Martin |

I have a user who just showed me the same problem with the standard display scheme and I've been able to duplicate it.
The problem we see is the last bullet disappearing due to text wrapping on the paragraph above it in the same object. Adjusting the column width will fix it for the object provided that that 1) it doesn't affect other objects 2) you ensure other views don't have similar column widths and 3) you don't adjust it near another word wrap boundary. This is a major problem and I'm reporting it to Telelogic. Les |

Les,
Took me a while to convince Telelogic, but they have recently managed to replicate the fault and "Development are currently working on a fix for it". I'm still using 8.3 myself in place of 8.2 and do find it noticeably quicker but will withhold general release until the patch is issued. ------------------------- - Martin |

Has anyone noticed any differences in the performance of regular expression in DOORS 8.3? It appears to have gotten worse.
For example, run this sample code in DOORS 8.3 and in other DOORS versions (please note code is meant only to test use of regular expressions and is not perfect code). Monitor the memory usage of the client during the code execution. The DOORS 7.1 client will consume around 40 MB of memory. On the other hand, the DOORS 8.3 client will consume anywhere from 200 MB to 600+ MB of memory. ------------------------- pete.kowalski(at)motorola.com Edited: 27-Dec-2007 at 07:41 by Pete Kowalski |

Yes I ran into this phenomenon as well. I found that if I resize the Text Object column, the text will then be presented correctly. It only happens on some object; I can't identify what is unique about these particular objects.
