I recently encountered a rather interesting situation. We had set up our modules for Shareable edit in DOORS 7.1. We recently archived the DOORS project (with the modules set up for shareable edit) and restored the project on to DOORS 8.1. Now, we are unable to lock individual sections in our restored modules. Does shareable edit have to be reset on a project if it is has been upgraded to a higher version of DOORS? Please do let me know. Thank you.

Regards,

Pranav

Yes. If you restore a module from an archive, the shareable edit mode is not set anymore and you have re-set it.

Hi everybody.

I've got another kind of problem related to Sharable edit: we usually work in Sharable edit mode at level 2; when one of us creates a copy of a level 2 object (switching to exclusive edit mode) and then when he switch back to Sharable mode, the lock function doesn't work proper.

We discovered that Sharable edit works only if all of the object inherits the access rights. Also we found that when we copy a level 2 obj it resets the access rights inheriting for all of the obj of the module!
So we patched this problem by a script that forces the inheriting of the access right for every object.

Someone else experienced the some problem?

Is it a bug of DOORS 8.2?

Thanks.

Francesco.

Yes, that is how DOORS works. The objects at the object level where you have defined to sharing have inheritance deselected, but all the objects in that section inherit the access rights. Then you can lock that section, because the object at the defined sharing level has specific access and all objects under it inherit the same access right.

When you copy an object in DOORS it sets the inheritance on by default, so you lose the shareable edit for the newly copied section. You have to manually either deselect the inheritance for that object (in your case level 2 object) or run again the Setup for sharing (for level 2).

It is not a bug, just a nuisance.

Francesco,

it is not a bug, but the (admittedly confusing) way shareable sections are defined and managed in DOORS.

In a few words:

1) Shareable sections start where the inheritance of access rights stops. This is illustrated in the Understanding editable sections section of the DOORS help.

2) New objects (or copied objects in your case) never create new sections "on their own". If you create (or copy) a new object at a certain level, the new object belongs to the same section as its parent object.

3) If you copy a hierarchy of objects, then, as you observed, the complete hierarchy looses all specified shareable sections, i.e. all access rights are set to inherited in this hierarchy of objects.

4) All of the above means that soon after you started working with shareable sections, you will have to scan the module again and re-set the access rights in order to set the shareable sections as you want them to be.

The attached script, which I found in this forum and slightly modified it, can help you for manually checking the current shareable sections, and for setting new sections.

Regards,

Peter

Thanks to Peter and Pekka for your answers!
Now I can understand how the Shareble edit works.

Even though I still can't understand why the copying of a particular obj reset the access inherit of all obj of the module!
After that we wasn't able to lock more than one obj at time because all the access was set to off.

Now I will try to recreate the problem to investigate on.

Thanks.

Francesco.
