OK, so I received a temporary evaluation license for DOORS 8.3 from Telelogic. I installed the 8.3 database server and it is up and running. I installed the 8.3 client and pointed it to the license file (doors.dat) that they Telelogic sent us. Now everytime I attempt to start the client I get the FLEXnet License Finder dialog box, I point it to the license file again, and get the attached error, basically saying it cannot connect to the license server system.

Huh...apparently we can't attach bitmaps anymore....So....here's the error:

License Error: Cannot connect to license server system.
The license server manager (lmgrd) has not been started yet,
the wrong port@host or license file is being used, or the
port or hostname in the license file has been changed.
Feature: DOORS
Server name: xxx.xxx.xx.xxx
Licesen path: 19353@xxxxxxxxx;
FLEXnet Licensing error: -15,10. System Error 10061 "WinSock: Connection refused"
For further information, refer to the FLEXnet LIcensing End User Guide,
available at "www.macrovision.com".

I've heard there have been issues with upgrading to 8.3 and licensing, but not sure what the issue was. I shouldn't have to have a license server running if I'm using a local license file right?

Correct me if I am wrong, but I thought that the new style licensing means that you must get licenses through the flex service and you can no longer point to a local file.

Get back to Telelogic and ask them - I would like to know the answer.

That's kinda what I thought too Tony, but for evaluation licenses they send you a local license that you can point to.

I did figure out the problem though and confirmed with Telelogic last night. My test server does not have it's own monitor, keyboard or mouse; so I usually do a remote desktop into the server when I want to use it. I was trying to install the DOORS 8.3 client on the server through the remote desktop, apparently Telelogic doesn't allow you to use a local license file when going the any kind of remote application. I installed the client on my laptop and pointed it to the license file and everything worked fine.

You say you first attempted to install the DOORS client on the Server, instructing it to use a license file on your client? I'd be surprised if that didn't work, so long as when on the server and using Windows Explorer, you can navigate from there to your client and see the file.

To do that, you wouldn't use the normal notation "c:\MyStuff\MyDoors\License.dat' because the c: drive is on the server; instead you may do something like this: \\MyClientTag\MyDoors\License.dat, and in order for that to work you would have to first define your \MyDoors folder as a shared folder. And all that works only so long as both client and server are in the same domain (or something like that).

"You say you first attempted to install the DOORS client on the Server, instructing it to use a license file on your client?"

Nope.

I attempted to install the DOORS client on the Server with the license file on a network drive (as well as directly on the server).

This wouldn't work because I was operating on the server through a remote desktop connection. Had I been working directly on the server, there wouldn't have been an issue, at least that's what Telelogic support said. Has something to do with it not being a floating license as to the reason it doesn't work via remote desktop.

Not a big deal, I've got working on my lap top and am in the process of evaluating.

I'm using a temp license right now for DOORS 8.3 as our license server is the older FlexLM which doesn't support 8.3 licenses. I pointed it to the license file and it worked fine. On the start menu with your DOORs install, you go to

Start->Telelogic->Telelogic Lifecycle Solutions->Telelogic Licensing 11.0->License Setup

Choose to pick a "Node Locked License" which lets you browse to the license file.
