Answer:
D'Oh!

Yes I was using string and not text, thanks for that.

The first idea is a good one and I'll probably look into doing something alone those lines a later date.

Hi,

I'm probably missing something obvious here, but how do you get carriage returns into a string field (That's not the Object Text)? One of the columns we have is "Compliance Evidence", which we want to contain a list of the compliance documents against a requirement, e.g. :-

System Requirement Specification
Sub-System Definition Document
Flight Test Report

I know DOORS can store soft carriage returns because we've imported Word documents in the past containing them in tables. We've tried things like Alt-Return etc. but no joy. We don't want to use an enumerated type because the list of possible compliance evidence values will be large.

Any help appreciated.

Here's a thought from a slightly different angle. If the compliance documents are in DOORS (even if they are just a reference via an object in a 'compliance documents' formal module), you could link to them, then have a DXL column that finds the references at the other end of the link (which would be the document name). That way you don't have to enter the document name (and run the risk of getting it wrong) and you can include the traceability information in exported documents. And you don't have to enter carriage returns at all.

But to answer your question, you can't enter carriage returns in a string field, only in a text field.

Paul.
