I don't think that's a realistic restraint. Forgive my ignorance, but if I scanned the modPrefix and substituted each occrrance of the above by inserting a new slash charcter in modPrefix before calling this function (e.g. change "[" to "\["), would that bypass this restraint?

I believe that substituting "[" with "\[" would bypass that restraint, but you should test the functionality before releasing the code into the wild. You may need to modify your code to insert "\\" before any of the listed characters since the backslash itself must be escaped in order for it to be not interpreted.

The set of characters I previously listed is probably incomplete. You may also need to include standard RegExp wildcards like "?*.^$+". As always, test test test!
