We have both DOORS 7.1 and 8.1 installed. The top level Administrator account works correctly under DOORS 7, but not under DOORS 8. Our local IT guy doesn't seem to know what the problem is and is not trying very hard to find a solution.

DOORS users can be set up with administraion rights but this is not the same as the Administrator account.

Any suggestions of common problems and their solutions?

In which way it is not working? You can not log in to DOORS as Administrator?
Do the 7.1 and 8.1 versions use the same database? If they use different databases then they might have different passwords for Administrator.

That's right, we cannot log in as Administrator. Neither the default (blank) password nor the one we use for DOORS 7 works.

We have separate databases for DOORS 7 & 8. User data was not archived and restored between databases so the DOORS 7 Administrator password may not be known by DOORS 8. It could be as simple as not knowing the default password, but our IT guy thinks there is more to it than that.

There is not default password for Administrator. It is set the first time somebody starts a client to that database. Typically the user setting up then forgets the password :-)

Possible actions:

- if you do not have any important data in 8.1 database, just delete the files from that data directory. Start DOORS client again and set a new password for Administrator for the new empty database.

or

- make archives of the data, then delete the files and proceed as above

or

- read from DOORS Help (?, or Managing DOORS) the procedure how to get one-time password for Administrator from DOORS Support

There is no default password for administrator. When you first launch doors after installing a new database, you are prompted to enter the Administrator password. This must be done before you can use doors.

If the person who installed, and then launched doors cannot remember the password they entered then you will have to go to Telelogic and get a temporary Administrator password from them.

I've never used the one-time get-password procedure from Telelogic, but IIRC you use a special login parameter, call Telelogic with the displayed Key, keep that window open until Telelogic returns the response key, then type that in. Since Telelogic in in Europe, US folks may end up keeping that prompt open all night waiting for a response.

You could also login as a DB admin, modify the DB properties login policy such that passwords are not needed, then login as the Administrator. Then change the password for that account (Options menu), then modify the DB properties to start using passwords again. I suspect you'd need perhaps 1 minute of idle time after modifying the properties before trying to login. Now that I think of it, this sounds like a good idea.

This was really good idea! I went through it and it seems to be working.

Hold on a minute - The password change prompt requires you to know the old Admin password before you can create a new password - am I missing something here? How does this help Jim's situation?

Thanks to all for your suggestions. It was the DB Admin account that was inaccessible. It turns out that it was a BOFH* moment. With the local IT guy's arm twisted firmly up his back he tried a few favourite passwords and got in. Problem now resolved.
