Using DOORS v7.1 I am attempting to export a partition I have created, and now it have generate the .par file successfully.
But I want to import the .par file to another datebase in V8.2 , and then it always tells me import failed. So can we import partition from V7.1 to V8.2? if not, how can I solve this problem? |

I have not seen anything yet in this forum or DOORS help files that would suggest a path forward for you. My personal opinion is that Partitions have as much usefullness as "Descriptive Modules", which DOORS 9 no longer lets user create.

My very limited experience with partitions leads me to agree with Ron. Things always seem to go wrong.
Are you using partitions because you are collaborating with a third party? If so, and they need to edit the data then you need to align the versions of the doors databases. You may be able to get round the problem by using an intermediate data format for transferring data between the two sites, such as Excel or XML. Excel is a very good way to transfer data between modules in separate databases, although links will need to be stored in attributes. XML is far more powerful, but would require the overhead of customised DXL to handle the data. ------------------------- Tony Goodman Smart DXL limited www.smartdxl.com |

At General Dynamics Canada, we use partitions very frequently with our partners/subcontractors. This is a great way to exchange data and get updates, including traceability links.
Partitions take some getting used to. Done incorrectly, it can lead to considerable grief. Once all of its nuances are understood, working with partitions is fairly seamless. From our experience, partitions are not compatible between different major DOORS versions. Whenever we upgrade, we need to rejoin all partitions prior to the upgrade. |

Telelogic consulting in Germany provide an add-on called 'eXchange' which allows the transfer of modules between databases, across multiple versions, and also allows limited access to attributes in both the 'home' and the 'away' databases. I've used this - with additional scripting - to receive multiple modules from a customer so we can agree the requirements before proceeding with development.
The basic principle is as outlined by Tony, using XML. I can provide some documentation describing the add-on, but you'll have to talk to your Telelogic rep to get the tool and its licence. I don't know what they're charging for it, or which versions it supports (but definitely 7.x and 8.x), and I'm not on commission for them, despite having told several people about the tool -- maybe I should be... If you don't want to part with cash, I'd go the Excel route. ------------------------- Paul dot Tiplady at TRW dot com TRW Automotive |
