![]() Answer: Maryanne, Suggestions: - Build a few test modules/test users and use the "Tools/DXL Library" function. Start practicing. - Essential: Take the DOORS DXL Course. If you can't go for some reason, speak with your agent about a "soft-copy" of their DXL Training courses. (They practice with "Car" modules, but be careful with women drivers in that module.) - Start building a library (shared-location) of DXL code in your area. If you know of anyone at your place who has used DOORS, pool all the work together. I'm sure you'd rather change a dozen lines not hundreds. Respectfully, Ben | |

As the doors admin, my responsiblities include creating all new projects, adding new users, granting write access to projects. I have inherited some dxl scritpts that do some of the group access cloning, count the number of users in the data base. I am looking for a great DXL manual to come up to speed as fast as possible. What do you all sugggest?
Thank you, Maryanne Noel-Leedy 913-762-9213 maryanne.leedy@mail.sprint.comText |

There is no great DXL manual. The existing manual is a reference manual that rarely includes some explanation. If you don't know what you are looking for you won't find it. Be sure to use the DXL help when searching so you get used to that.
You'll need to decide if you really NEED to learn a bunch of DXL for your responsibilities. Its a major committment. - Louie |

I agree with Louie, use the on-line help, not paper or PDF.
If you don't know the name of the function, you will probably never find it, so use keywords or browse the contents. Having said that, there are a lot of built-in functions in DXL that have the same name such as set() and create(), and finding the help for these can also be difficult. DXL programming is desceptively simple (like C without semicolons), but it has many quirks and will bite you unexpectedly if you are not careful. I don't think anyone can get up to speed quickly - it takes a lot of experience! But don't let me put you off - DXL programming is fun, if you have the time. ------------------------- Tony Goodman http://www.smartdxl.com |

Actually I use the paper manual extensively; got tabs and notes all over it. Sequencial browsing is a lot easier with paper. But I often use the on-line help for real specific things like call-parameter syntax of a command whose name I know, and for the general searches.

Ben et all,
Thanks to all of you who responded to this thread!.. Ben, I like your suggestion...marked it as the answer. This is a good process for me to start with dxl scripts. ![]() |

Hello Maryanne,
I know exactly how you feel - as I am in the same position. Although I took the course it did not solve all of my DXL problems. "Learning by doing" seems to be the only way and building your own DXL Library helps. Besides the examples in the manual and in the online help I often have a look at a DOORS function somehow related to my problem and try to understand what and how they do it there. Depending on your installation you'll find the DOORS DXL functions in <DOORS HOME DIR>\lib\dxl Have a nice day & hope you'll succeed! Hiltrud |

I have started with DXL in january and at first I couldn't find a polite words to comment the existing documentation. Unfortunatelly it was impossible to get the training, so I had to use that ... manual. Finally, i recognized, the best information source:
Telelogic's own DXL scripts stored in the doors\lib\dxl directory I learned and understood a lot by studying those files. |
