Has anyone installed/using DOORS on VMware. If yes, could you share your experiences good or bad if any.

Some of my customers are running DOORS DB Server on VMware. It works normally, no difference from installation directly on some OS.

Yeah, about half of my 200 users are using VMware, experience is smae as for native windows users, however we have quite high end PC's for the VMware guys, split processing on dual core CPU (or so I am led to understand, have not really investigated since it seems to work

Thanks. How long have you been using DOORS on VMware ? We are in a dilemma about using vmware, because our IT strategy is to move most or all of our applications on to it, however Telelogic is not currently equipped to support DOORS on vmware. Our concern - if we run into any major issues, Telelogic will not be able to reproduce the problem in their test environment.

Just out of curiosity, how are you planning on handling the OS licenses for the "virtual machines". We would like to use VMware for our DOORS training, however that was the main issue. Other than that, there shouldn't be any noticable difference running on a virtual as opposed to native machine.

Steve, I do not have the answer on OS licenses. IBM handles vmware for us here at Visteon. They have been iniating the move of most of our apps on to vmware. Some applications like Clearquest have had problems running on vmware.

Is there any update on information regarding the use of VMware?
Does anyone currently have their DOORS server on VMware utilizing Vmotion for load balancing? We are now being told by IT that our servers will be virtualized using VMware and they will be using VMware's "Vmotion" technology to perform load balancing. My concern is the possibility of the DOORS clients losing their perceived connection to the DOORS server during the migration from one physical server to another. |

Hi Douglas, yes, we have our doors server on VMware, with no ill effects. I can't comment on the Vmotion, but I can say that our DOORS Server is just an instance of a Windows environment running under VMware, on a linux server that also hosts a number of other such Windows emulations.
As such it has only a share of the total CPU and disk space available to the whole. Im not sure if we actually share that load between a number of separate machines though. As far as performance goes, we have noticed no difference than when we ran the server on a dedicated windows box. The CPU load of the DOORS server is pretty low level, the biggest bottleneck as far as I know is the disk access time, since DOORS data is very fragmented in its storage format. This presumes you have a halfway decent LAN of course, but to my knowledge your LAN has to be pretty bad before it becomes the bottleneck. ------------------------- Andrew Tagg Thales Air Systems, Melbourne Australia. andrew.tagg@thalesatm.com |
