Before I took this position, I heard horrified stories that my predecessor managed to crash the DOORS service often by writing and running DXL on a typical client. That is, his DXL was accidentally pretty hostile. This was with version 5.2.

Anybody got any idea how a DXL can crash the service? Can DXL be made to execute on the server rather than the client?

I've never crashed the DOORS server itself. Only the client. But I've never used 5.2 either.
