Hello,

We are using a mixture of DOORS 8.1 and DOORS 8.2 clients to talk to a DOORS 8.1 server.

The following email details some display problems some of my users are experiencing - I have opened a case with Telelogic but, due to the nature of the problems it is difficult to resolve them. I am wandering whether anyone on this forum has sufferred similar problems and what if anything they did to address them. Postulations on the causes of the problems are also welcome!! Note that most of the problems are concerned with equations that live in microsoft expression editor or word and are viewed within embedded OLEs in DOORS. My own suspicions vear towards something to do with the word templates underlying the OLEs.

Also note that the PC systems used are broadly the same (HP Compaq) with Windows XP
Professional with either CRT or flat-screen LCD
displays.

1. Apostrophes Missing from Print, Example 1:

Printing MG_305 of "'MG P and Q database' baseline 1.9 current - DOORS", the
text in the "Query" field prints "...'math_symbol' should read
'math_symbol' ...", i.e. implying no change. However, reading the text on
the PC VDU screen reveals that the second occurrence of 'math_symbol' is
qualified with an apostrophe, (I.e. reads 'math_symbol' "prime", in the
arcane argot).

Once baselined, the prints do not show this difference between
displayed and printed texts. Nor was there a difference obtainable when
printing from another PC to another printer from the baseline in question.
(A fuller set of PC-printer combinations were not explored at the time).
For what little it is worth, the hardcopy in question is available for the
time being.

2. Apostrophes Missing from Print, Example 2:

David Martin experienced a similar problem when printing expressions
containing primes, and finding certain primes missing from his print. He
was able to reproduce the problem at the time, and show it to colleagues,
who, in turn were able to show that they didn't exhibit the problem when
printing to the same printer from their own (similar) PC systems. This is
the secondary problem referred to in 4, below, which Mr. Martin can no
longer reproduce - it appears to be DOORS baseline dependent.

3. Symbols Missing from VDU Display:

However, it is worth noting that he was printing sections of requirement
because he had experienced problems with symbols not appearing on the VDU
display, (even though font Universal Math 1 was installed on his PC), and believed a hard-copy was a reliable representation of the
requirement database.

4. "not equals" symbols Missing in Browsing Display Mode:

The "not equals" symbols do not appear in the normal browsing
display mode, only becoming evident on attempting to open the table as an
OLE object with its original editor. The symbols are plainly displayed in
"SRS baseline 3.8(-)" and "SRS baseline 3.8(.5)".

The approach to creating the DOORS database has been to import MS_Word
documents, tables, Visio diagrams, maths equations editor expressions, etc.
as well as using keyboard direct entry.

In conclusion, DOORS is our primary medium for receiving project
requirements, and so it is of huge concern if there are question marks over
the veracity with which it displays these requirements. The difference in
the requirement statement between a variable and its derivative is
frequently a simple apostrophe. At least one of the above problems was not
discovered until code review / test.

Thanks for any help!

Richard Good

There is a known problem with ole in that -- a revision to an ole in DOORS may not be exported to word correctly. -- This I suspect is not a DOORS issue but a microsoft issue.

I refrain from making any revision of OLE in DOORS -- I find the original ole and revise then import into DOORS.
