Answer:
The fixed the user list slow problem in v6 and v7. But that has nothing to do with your general slow responses otherwise.

Sounds to me like either the DOORS server is too busy (its single threaded), the server itself is too busy, or the bus that connects the server to the clients is too busy. If its the DOORS server you can improve response time by creating a few separate DOORS DBs, each with its own server (one is port 36677, the next is 36678 etc). Clients would need to be configured to point to the "correct" server, although command line switches including "=d 36678@server" would suffice. If its the server or the bus then you need upgrades, no doubt hardware.

I don't think the existence of a large DB or the existence of lots of users has anything to do with slow response; it will be the number of concurrent users. You can verify that by, say, writing a DXL to open and close all modules in a project and time how long it takes. Run it during the day, then run it 4am Sunday morning.

We are running doors 5.2 on windows 2000 platfrom. There are currently 3200 users in the database ( not all active) with about 55 users on concurrently. There are probably 500 projects that are active. The performance has degraded to almost a crawl. When we open the "manage users" option, it takes 15 -30 just to open. I was wonder if anyone out there experiences this slow response. Also, did upgrading to 7.0 improve anything?
Thanks,
Maryanne

Certain features in DOORS v7 are significantly improved - the manage users is one of them.

We have v5.2, v6.0, and v7.0 running. For v5.2, the manage users was so slow that we created a DXL script to let us Edit existing users and Create new users. For some reason, the DXL script we wrote is able to load the user list in less than 30 seconds (vs about 10 minutes through the GUI). The version 6 and 7 DOORS built-in Manage Users function runs as fast as our DXL, so we don't use it for those versions.

We have not experienced general user performance issues with v5.2, but we use a UNIX database server. We do have a Windows 2000 database server at one of our smaller facilities. On that server, we have noticed that archiving and import/export negatively effects the performance for all users. We have seen that v7 is a little faster than v5 and a lot faster than v6, but we don't have a large number of concurrent users on our Windows based servers - so you might not see as much difference. Most of the v7 improvements are in the area of opening modules, saving modules, and anything to do with users (user management, setting access, etc).

If you decide to upgrade to v7.0, make sure you get the latest patch and test any custom DXL's. OLE objects are handled differently starting with v6.

Is the DOORS server still single threaded in V7?

Thanks
