DOORS 8.1 - We have started shutting down the DOORS Db Server prior to doing a system backup of the server (Not my choice). Now everytime I have a DOORS client session which was left open overnight a dialog box is displayed saying the connection to the database server was lost and will now exit DOORS. I should mention that the DOORS Db server was started immediately after backups so we know that the server is currently running when the dialog box is displayed.

While I can understand the reason for such a feature:

1. Is there a way to re-establish the connection to the database server via dxl?
2. Is there a way to disable this feature of exiting DOORS when the connection is lost?

Well it'd be pretty difficult to maintain a connection to DOORS when the server is offline. What I can tell you that during the DOORS training I attended recently, if we had a module open with unsaved changes, when we went to close DOORS after closing said dialog box, we got the prompt to save changes. If we selected to save them, when we reopened the module, despite it saying the connection was lost, the changes were in fact saved. So it doesn't appear that you'll loose any data if you do loose connection.

However, it is a bad habit to get into with leaving DOORS open (especially with unsaved changes) overnight. Unless you have your own DOORS license this burns a floating license and possibly leaves a module(or modules) locked so that others can't get into them unless the DOORS admin removes the locks (which also can cause database corruption).

OK, the scenario is:

I am the DB admin. I am running a DXL program overnight on a local client machine waiting for 5 am to start the dxl code. This DXL Program does not use or refer to folders/projects/modules etc and should run locally without needing to access the server. This code worked perfectly when we were using DOORS 5.2. Under DOORS 5.2 the database connection appeared to be automatically reconnected or this feature wasn't in DOORS 5.2.

I also do not recommend keep DOORS open overnight for no good reason either.

I am curious to know why you would be using DXL when the program is not doing anything within doors.

Also, why do you need a client running to run such code?
Surely you could schedule a windows job to run doors in batch mode after the server has started.

The code to run a DXL batch script is as below.

Save this in a batch file and have your IT department schedule as a service to run at your specified time. You can have the dxl file on a network drive just make sure you use \\ not \. I also recommend creating a read only DOORS account specifically for this purpose.

I don't know how much you know about .bat files (I'm certainly no expert) but you can run more than one script from this batch file. Just make sure you use the /WAIT command or they'll all try to run at once and most likely overload your DOORS server and crash.

I have a set of dxl functions that run at certain times of the day. Each one has it's own Start Time associated with it. When my dxl code encounters a function that needs to start at 5am....it will just wait until 5 am to start running the code....So, all it's doing is waiting for 5am then it calls the dxl function to which starts processing modules.

I do understand how to run Batch Scripts. Thank you.
