Answer:
We are using a Dell 6300 with dual 700s, 1GB of memory, and about 100GB of disk space. I currently have about 500 users with about 30 on the server at any given time during normal business hours

Dual CPUs/CPU Speed
From what I've seen the load isn't really on the server. Since DOORS is a client/server system most of the processing is actually done on the client end. A pair of mid level processor should be able to handle your load easily now and into the forseeable future.

RAM
Most servers come with 1 or 2 GB of memory standard. So if you are buying a new box I would just stick with the "default build." It will easily handle the loads you are talking about.

Hard Drive Space
I've got 54 projects using DOORS in some fashion and probably in excess of 1000 modules. Some of these modules have close to 10,000 objects. I don't know if DOORS implements any compression, but I took a look at my data directory as I was writing this and it is only about 8 GB.

My company just purchased DOORS and I've been put in charge with implementing it. We will be implementing in a client/server environment with the server being a Windows 2000 server. We will be purchasing a new server to run the DOORS server on and I'm trying to figure out what to get. I'm not familiar with DOORS at all and the published hardware requirements are very vague so I would appreciate any information that anyone can provide based on the following information.

A bit of background on our environment.

We'll be starting with only 3 users in a trial period, but they hope to grow to anywhere from 20 to 40 or 50 users over the next year. So I'm looking to get a box that will be big enough to handle the load as we grow or at least be upgradeable to handle it, instead of having to replace the whole box a year from now.

The server box OS will be Windows 2000 Advanced Server. The server box will be dedicated to running the DOORS server. It won't be running any other processes on it. We plan to have a single box host both the DOORS database server and the FLEXlm License server.

CPU Speed:
How CPU speed dependent is the DOORS server. Should we get as fast a CPU as we can get currently? I'm sure we don't need it to start with but as we grow toward that 40 or 50 users, how much impact will going from a 2.4 to a 3.2 GHz CPU have?

Dual CPUs:
Will the DOORS server benefit from multiple CPUs? We plan to start with a single CPU. It's easy to add a 2nd CPU to the type of box we'll be getting if we need it in the future, but will multiple processors even provide any benefit for DOORS?

RAM:
The published spec just says "at least 128 Mb more than your OS requirements". That's EXTREMELY vague. Will we require more RAM as the size of the database grows? Are there any general rules about how much RAM you should have based on how big your database gets? Will 512Mb be sufficient when running DOORS server on Windows 2000 Advanced Server, or do we need more?

Hard Drive Space:
Not being familiar with the DOORS product at all, I have NO idea at all on how much hard drive space we need for the database. Does DOORS compress it's data at all? I know this is kind of a hard question to answer without some detail on how much info we might put in our database, but since we're brand new to DOORS, I can't really even say that. I know they have about 1000 pages worth of stuff they want to put in it right away and the long term desire is to use it for all of our projects, but beyond that, I don't really have any more detail. Maybe some folks can just give me example of how much data they're storing and how big (in Mb or Gb) their databases are. Or some comments like "I've never seen a DB any bigger than X."

Again, any assistance anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated. THANK YOU!

We've had 5 or 6 people using our database for about three years with a large number of documents (well in excess of 1000 pages worth) and we are using about 350MBytes of disk space on the server. We do not have many (any?) bitmapped images which I expect would use up disk space.

David,

Thanks for posting this information, I have also found it very useful.

Could I ask what network you have between the clients and servers, as this seems to be one of the factors that can influence things a lot.

Are you using DOORS v5, v6, or v7?

Got any info on Client-Server interfaces?

we have a 100Mbit infrastructure with GigE between the various servers on our network. We have recently upgraded from DOORS 6SP1 to DOORS 7SP1, and there hasn't been any noticeable impact on server access times.
