Answer:

Hi,

Sorry for my late reply and thank you for your replies. Using the Windows XP "Character Map" resolved the problem, easily. I did try Kevin's method (Word 2003, DOORS v8.1) and it was accomplished, but somewhat difficult.

John,

I don't believe this is possible in the way you would like it to be, but you CAN do this.

The key is to go to Word, insert the symbol there, copy it from Word, and paste into DOORS.

In DOORS, it will show up as a square. But export to Word....

And in fact, in testing this, it showed up as a square, so I closed the module. I reopened the module and pasted again, and it worked!

Everyone, try this out! I am able to reproduce it using Word 2003 and DOORS 8.2

1. Insert a symbol in Word
2. Copy the symbol
3. Paste the symbol in Object Text. It shows up as a square.
4. Export to Word (Excel doesn't work)
5. Go back to DOORS, select the text of the symbol, and paste.

I just tried it twice. It worked like a charm. A really cheap charm purchased by counterfeiters in the streets for a ridiculous price, but it worked.

Hi John, Hi Kevin,

another good possibility to insert these symbols is to use the Windows "accessories" char map, if you have installed it.

You may find it in "Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> char map" (Sorry if it is not the fully correct path - I've a german Windows version and tried to translate it into english )

There you can select the desired Font (maybe Windings or Symbol or ....) and copy the selected chars into clipboard, from where they can be pasted into Doors.

Greetings
Reik

Hi, using the character map Reik mentioned you can also find out the ASCII (decimal) code for a particular symbol's keyboard shortcut. For instance on my UK keyboard, if you hold down ALT and type in 156 on the number pad, it will give you a UK pound sign. This should work across all programs on your computer. The Character Map window will show you the keystrokes required in the bottom right hand corner, but the numbers don't always match up. The UK pound sign should be ALT+163, so you may have to experiment a bit. Word's Insert Symbol table also gives you the required ALT combination, but you'll need to change it to ASCII (decimal). Simon.

You could insert a .gif as an OLE, this would not constrain you to characters and fonts but would give you cause to think a little on exporting, particularly if you use a spreadsheet/Excel export.
