Hi Everyone!

My boss wants to export DOORS tables to Excel, however when we do, we're disappointed. All exported data from a table, winds up in a single column in Excel.  For example, if the DOORS table has 3 rows, 3 columns (total nine cells), the contents of those cells is dumped into Excel, in a single column, 9 rows, data appearing sequentially.  The affect, is quite similar to exporting a DOORS table to WORD, in Table layout.

How do I export a DOORS table to Excel, so that the results looks like the DOORS table? i.e. 3 rows, 3 columns in Excel?

Keep in mind that I'm not a .dxl expert and my DOORS administrator, who is a .dxl guru, didn't have an answer either.  There's got to be elegant, simple solution to this question.  Excel is extremely powerful and can manipulate and arrange data in ways that DOORS simply can't do.

Thanks, Vince Black, Requirements Engineer, ICES, Inc.

Vince,

I don't think your DOORS Administrator is a DXL guru. This is a tricky problem, but one a guru should be able to solve.

First, I highly recommend you stop use of DOORS tables and use OLE objects instead. This is yet another reason why DOORS tables should not be used.

Secondly, what do you wish to export? The object number and text? Just the text?

Have your DXL guru look at the following code to get started:

There are several solutions but I will only discuss easiest:

-- export to MSword then use a third party word to excel converter.

Example can be found at http://www.processtext.com/abcword.html

Export the table to WORD in BOOK format.  It will appear as a proper Table.   Copy and paste it into Excel.
