We're getting ready to upgrade to 8.1 and I was wondering if anyone had any cool ideas about how to use external links. From what I've found so far, you can link to any random web page or document that's accessible remotely. Now, that's interesting, and can save a step or two (copy + paste link into browser, e.g.), but it seems like there's so much more you could do with it.

From this thread I see that you can't get to a specific place in an Excel spreadsheet. Is it the same for, say, Word?

Can I link to a specific CR in ClearQuest? A ClearCase file, with or without the same view?

Any input would be appreciated!

Chris

You can externally link to any file\object that can be addressed via a URL, and that includes bookmarks if the file\object supports bookmarks. Have found it to be enormously useful for providing external links into a knowledge document management system where every document has a unique URL. This has reduced the need to import documents into DOORS.

We're using it with MS Sharepoint: provides traceability from evidencce, held in MSOffice documentes. to statemet level arguments/ reqs held in DOORS.

Referring to external links, I would like to consider importing/exporting from/to AllFusion Gen.
There exist a number of important cases in Athens where DOORS are required by potential customers, while the core analysis and development environment is AllFusion.
After a certain study I found that external links would be the only way to work around that case.

Nevertheless, i would like to address the specific situation abovementioned.

Could you please provide me with any detailed info on how to deal with that?

My e-mail is panos@openvision.gr
