Currently we have different projects running in parallel that are working on the same baselined specification document which is actual stored in a formal module. However, at the end, the formal modules as specified by the projects should be merged with the orginal baselined formal module.

I am looking for a solution to branch and merge formal modules. Does anyone have experience with this topic?

Thanks in advance,
Toni

Hi Toni, to allow detection of modified object I would let the writers draw links between the to be modified object and the source specification. It would optionally surely be good style to let them give a justification by app. attribute why to do so. Deletions of object should be done by copy and link with setting a user-attribute to "ToBeDeleted". The link stuff may serve as input to a kind of "merge-board", which will identify new core-features and new variant-specific features. (So far I did not think about the direction of link.) These probably upcoming variants should be flagged and lead back in the original specification. The issue is related to "sw product line approach", that allows reuse of SW and their spec's. I guess this is the big context of your question. Big tip: http://www.telelogic.com/resources/index.cfm and search for "product line". There was a demo project with honeywell, nice to read.... Hope this helps Hubertus

As the document is being drafted try setting up the module for sharing so more than one user can work on the module at once. This will allow your different 'projects' to work on the same document. Using Access Control you can also limit who can edit which sections.

Once the document has been issued try the Change Proposal System. This will allow different projects to propose changes on the baseline specification. These can be grouped (stapled), reviewed and the agreed changes applied to the baseline by an appointed user.
