It appears that most of the Aerospace members are DoDAF/MODAF compliant. I’m just wondering if this might be an inevitable trend and that sooner or later it will come our way.
Are there advantages/disadvantages to us being proactive and complying wherever practicable? Is any of you successfully employing this TAU add-on? Would it be possible to share any 'pains and gains'? I will appreciate very much your prompt feedback. Thank you. Doina |

If you are not in the DoD or Aerospace business than I'm not sure this methodology will ever be forced on you. However, it is an excellent way to do Systems Engineering and that is why the DoD and MOD have adopted it.
We have just started using the TAU DoDAF add-on and we are happy with it. We do have a few recommendations to make. Like UML is terrible for doing some of the operational views. IDEF-0 is great for doing a few of the operation views. With that being said, System Architect has an integration between AI0-WIN. AIO-WIN is a IDEF-0 modeling tool. If Telelogic improves the integration between System Architect and DOORS and also improves some of the other annoinces with System Architect we will definately consider going with System Architect. Not sure how this is all going to play out with TAUG2 in the mix. Anyone know why "Big Blue" IBM is not implementing DoDAF? I feel sorry for those DoD contractors that have invested a lot of money in Rational products as I have seen no plans of DoDAF in ROSE, RoseRT or RoseXDE. Looks like they are sticking with the IT market. This is good for Telelogic though and I prefer Telelogic anyway as they listen to their customers. |

After working closely with the MODAF team in the MOD I can only say that all future contracts from the MOD will insist on the contractor utilising MODAF and supplying the documentation that includes all or a subset of the views and diagrams defined in the standard.
Since MODAF (and DODAF) are based on the UML 2 standard there is no reason why you can't be MODAF/DODAF compliant on a project with any good UML 2 modelling tool - it doesn't have to directly support MODAF - you could just create your own UML "MODAF" profile. wrt TAU vs System Architect for architecture frameworks I'd suggest you talk to your Telelogic account manager to understand the direction the company is going. |
