Hi,

I'm trying to find out if there is an easy way to create a template from an existing module (similar to the way you would do it with Word, ie. open a new blank document, type some headings, then save as a Word Template .dot file).

As far as I can tell, templates can only be created with DXL. The modules that I use have 10 or so attribute columns, but the existing DXL templates don't appear to create any attributes.

For the moment I have created a copy of an existing module, then deleted the text, leaving only the headings. I can then create copies of this empty module and add new text as required.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Simon.

Simon,

Have you tried the "Clone" function available from the "Edit" menu of the DOORS Database Explorer?

Hi Simon,

As Michael has suggested, the clone function can be used to create a view and attribute template from an existing module.

However, be aware that the replication of the views doesn't include replication of their individual general and advanced properties. So if the source of the clone has some specific settings for view properties, these will not be copied over. Once you have cloned a module, you may need to go back into the clone and apply the properties for each view to suit (This has been the case for DOORS v5 and v6, I'm unsure if this deficiency has been corrected in DOORS v7).

Thanks for your replies.

I've had a look at the Clone function and it's quite useful, although copying and pasting an existing module seems be working well for us.

In fact, on Monday and Tuesday I attended a DOORS course which was tailored for our organisation, and the preferred way of doing things is to create a template from an existing module by copy and paste (if required), then creating new modules from that template (ie. copy and paste again).

I am just adding a bit to this discussion.

I have created a template and am just using copy to replicate it.

Works fine. Attributes and views and objects are all copied.

Heres the one to think about.

Now I have made 40 copies of my template module and users have started entering data into them.

Then I find out that I need to change the template.

Either I want to add a new view or a new attribute.

How can I populate these changes in the template to the 40 modules using the template??

If anyone knows how please tell me
