Trying to solve a DOORS problem via Email, I'm stumped. Symptoms are:
[] Excessive delays when module is opened.
[] No delays when scrolling module, even after view changes
[] Excessive delays when changing views, even back to a view already used.
[] All views have a Wizard layout, pretty routine display the ObjID of linked objects. Layouts do NOT close modules so that's not the problem.
[] All views were created dependant on each other in some manner I don't understand.
[] If you delete the column with the layout, then switch views (without saving the view), the next view has NO delays, even though it has the same Layout.
[] There are 40 some views withn this layout.

There are no Addins. There are no Attr DXLs. There are no other Layouts in the module. Server ping times are slow but shouldn't cause these delays. There are 100s, not 1000s of linked objects.

Is it possible the View dependancies are somehow slowing down changing views? You need to internally load the original source view in order to get the layout information for it?

Help.

Hi Louie,

Just yesterday I was deleting a bunch of views (using DXL) from a module that had about 400 views, most of which were outdated. The mod's owner was and is experiencing very similar problems to yours, when changing views or when opening Manage Views. After probing the module's DXL attributes (6) looking for something obvious that would cause those problems, and finding nothing, I suggested they delete most of the views on the theory that the sheer # of views was causing the problem. I will need to get their Administrator password to finish the housecleaning, and if the performance improves significantly, I'll let you know in this thread.

You did not not say (or I missed it) how many total views your module has; just that it had about 40 w/ the layout DXL column. Would be interested to know. Also I did not see it mentioned how many modules are opened in the background by the layout DXL, nor if the default view contained layout columns (which would affect module-opening performance), nor if those other modules themselves have involved default views or are sizeable in some way. Interesting that removing a layout column from one view causes the view change to happen quickly. That sounds like something else is going on other than the # of views.

Also, didn't know what u meant in your last sentence (question?) about loading the original source view.

I developed a hypothesis that someone here may validate or invalidate.

Assuming

. --A module has a large number of views (150 public views & 150 private views.)
. --User is located 2000 miles away from the server.

Question.

. --When user changes views, will DOORS resend view defintion for all 150 views or is DOORS smart enought to just send view definition for just the requested view?

Hypothesis is:
. --If all the view definitions have to be resent over 2000 miles then response time will suffer.

Is there anyone here that has insight into this area of DOORS functionality?

I notice significant Server monitor activity when saving/loading/managing views, the more views the more apparent activity. Using Citrix and my Client opening the same module in both clients, saving a view in one lets the other one see it immediately when managing views. That's differenent than if you Read a module here and Edit it there: saved Edits there are not seen here until you re-open the module here.

I thus conclude that all Views are regularly loaded from server each time any are used.

Yes, folks far away loading 100s of views will certainly experience significant delays. These delays should be reasonably consistent regardless of which specific view you are saving/loading/managing; not counting extra processing a particular view may perform that the other does not.

I emphasize the word 'consistent'. If some views routinely load in a few seconds and other views routinely load in a couple minutes (for no particular reason) and if you tweak a minute view and it loads in seconds, then perhaps the distance is not the only issue dealing with the delays.
