Hi All,

I've been asked this by a team member and couldn't find an answer within the forums. Our supplier who uses DOORS 8 (not sure what sub-version) has stated that our DOORS 7.1 won't be able to import modules they create. I'm not so sure, having never used DOORS 8.

Can DOORS 8 export a .dma file in a DOORS 7 compatible format, or failing that will DOORS 7.1 Import the file but omit things it "doesn't understand" ?

I'm not sure whether the supplier is playing for time.

Cheers!

Your supplier is correct, DOORS 7.1 cannot read a DOORS 8 archive.

This is true for all major versions of doors. No facility is provided to archive data to an earlier version.

You will need to upgrade your doors installation or use an intermediate format or tool - XML, Word, CSV etc.

Tony's right on. We've done several such "downward-conversions," using Word, TSV, and a few DXL scripts to convert 8.x module archives into 7.x DMAs for some of our suppliers who're still using 7.x. It's no picnic, and we are strongly encouraging them to upgrade.

What I would like to know is, Why doesn't Telelogic provide that facility Tony alludes to -- archiving data for previous versions? I can guess why. But when I look at the Save As options in Microsoft Office apps (such as Word), I see they allow saving to earlier versions, and they always have. Telelogic, are you listening?

Hi Tom,

Any clues as to how to go about reconstructing a module from a TSV? Headaches I can imagine are the structure, and keeping the object ID's the same, including creating objects just to delete them if they don't exist in the TSV.

Hi Rob,

We use a Word xfer (export/import) to preserve the structure and OLEs, and a TSV xfer (export/import) to get all the other attributes. In order to provide a key for the TSV import to use (in update mode), we had to do some gymnastics. We revised the word export DXL to append the Object IDs in [brackets] onto the Object Texts and Object Headings, in the export to Word from D8.x. Then after we "import" the Word file into D7.x, with the appended [ID]s, we then run a DXL to parse out those IDs into a separate attribute, which we call "Original ID." And THAT attribute is what we use as the key for the TSV import. That's the gist of how we do it.

As you can see, we do not really preserve the Object ID, except in a user-defined attribute.

Hope that makes sense.

Why not this: before the original export put the Object Identifier in a column titled 'Original ID'? Then its in the TSV and will import directly into your attribute with the same name.

(In reply to Louie):
Yes, the exported TSV file does include the Object ID in a column titled Original ID. The D7.x module that got created by the Word "import" also contains those IDs, now separated into its own attribute and used as the common key for the TSV import. The key has to be in both import file and target DOORS module.

Worth mentioning here is that this procedure usually involves other gyrations such as dealing with text objects that have internal line breaks and/or OLE objects, both of which cause the objects to become multiple objects during the Word xfer. We've found ways to deal with those "splits" and sew them back together, so to speak, so we end up with the same number of objects and OLEs that we started with.

If you want to know more about our imperfect cumbersome process, feel free to email me.
