Is anyone using nested lockable sections?
By this I mean setting up for sharing at level 1 and then at level 2 etc. Does anyone change the level of the lockable sections as part of the normal work flow? By this I mean, set up module for sharing at level 2 and then at a later date set up the moule for sharing at level 3 etc. Do you have any good or bad experiences with using lockable sections? ------------------------- Tony Goodman http://www.smartdxl.com Edited: 19-Nov-2004 at 12:46 by Tony Goodman |

Tony,
We have tried on numerous ocassions to used Shareable edit at various levels, and to be honest, have had nothing but trouble with it - on each ocassion we ended up losing data through module corruption. We have now dropped Shareable Edit, and have implemented our own locking and data check out / check in mechanisms, allowing us to keep the original module in its Exclusive Edit form. Tony,
We use shareable edit regularly. Normally we set up sections at level 1 and level 3 objects. There have been some situations that resulted in corrupted data in the past, but we have not had that happen since v5.1 of DOORS. The only issues that we have are: 1. If you create too many sections (somewhere around 350), the performance of DOORS degrades significantly. We have a rule of thumb to try to keep to less than 300 sections. 2. If you are creating new sections, they will not be lockable until you open the module in Exclusive edit and run the Setup for Sharing tool again. You can also just go in and set the access for the new section specifically. Both of these require users to open the module in Exclusive edit. 3. If you are creating new sections, you have to lock the parent object to the new section. Otherwise the Insert menu item will be greyed out. You can't create any new objects before the first section that is defined in the module (unless you do it in Exclusive edit). You can't purge objects when in shareable edit (it will be diabled in the menu). That was one of the scenarios that used to cause data corruption. As far as changing the shareable levels during the phases of a project, we do that sometimes - as long as we are below the 300 section rule of thumb. |
