We are beginning to apply shareable edit to our modules but have been told that there are performance issues when this has done?  Does anyone have any details on the impacts it had to your project or pitfalls we should be aware of?

Shareable edit is implemented by each shareable section being a separate file therefore a large number of file can be generated and this has multiple impacts.
1.  Longer load times for the formal module.
2.  Windows Server has a maximum number of files that it can handle therefore excessive shares and baselining of shared modules inches you to the windows max.
3.  It is implied in item 2 but I will be explicit -- the baselines of a shared module have a equivalent large number of files which impacts load times of baselines and contribute to reading windows max.

Note: Unix does not have the same limitation that windows has
