I'm running a DOORS sortware development pilot project in a pharmaceutical company. Because we're regulated by the FDA, we have stringent requirements for our documents and the requirements trace matrix. Our current (Word-based) template for our test documents has all the test steps for a test case in a single table with this sturcture:

Column 1: test step number (1, 2, 3, etc)
Column 2: test step instructions
Column 3: expected results
Column 4: actual results (written in by the tester during execution of the test)
Column 5: pass/fail
Column 6: tester initials and dates (for each step)

Our document set is based on the IEEE 12207 standard.

In our trace matrix, the test steps are identified by their step numbers, including the test case and scenario numbers. My thought to get to the test step numbers into a structure that would work with DOORS was to pull the step number and instructions out of this table into a header (the header object number would become the step number and the instructions would become the header text). That way we would be able to generate the trace matrix according to our standard, be able to work more easily with user attributes, and be able to display the step instructions in the trace matrix as well as the number.

Is there a better way to handle the steps of the test cases so we can display what we need in the trace matrix?

Thanks for any help!

- Steve

Hi Steve have you tried the Test Module in DOORS? (under TOOLS->Test Tracking...) it seems that it will be able to track all your testing activites and may generate your WORD document as output.
