Answer:
Right. Its a bit confusing. It may help to point out that you may NOT have two Projects in the same database with the same name, even when the Projects are located in different folders. If you were allowed to, Project View wouldn't work.

EDIT: just noticed that you also cannot create a Project that has the same name as any top-level folder, nor visa-versa.

Nesting Projects inside other projects should be avoided.

What we've done is specify a number of top-level FOLDERS, one for each Program. The program folder contains all the Projects associated with that Program, even when there is only one such Project.

I encourage folks to use Database view since they can easily navigate to the Projects they want, simply by opening up the relevant program folder.

On a side note you can run the attached DXL, which finds all the Projects and displays they name along with their full path to the database root folder.

According to the DOORS help file, the difference between Project View and Database view is:

Switches between Project view and Database view.
When you start DOORS, the top-level items that are displayed in the left pane of the DOORS Explorer depend on your view:

In Project view, a list of the projects you're allowed to access is displayed.
In Database view, the root of the database tree is displayed. Below this, the parts of the database you're allowed to access are displayed.

For some reason I am unable to see certain projects using the Database view. But if I switch to Project view, I can see it. Furthermore, according to the help file, I should not have any access to the project in question since I can't see it in Database view. But that is not the case, as I can open/modify the project while in Project view.

Why is this?

Please note that I am logged in as a Database Manager, but even if I log in as the Administrator I still have the same issue.

Hi Sean,

this happens when you place projects not at the top-level but below other projects. If you move all projects at top-level, display is as expected.

Regards,

Peter

Peter,

In my case, when I open up in Project View many of the projects that I can't see in Database View seem to be at the top level already and not buried within other projects.

For instance, the DOORS explorer looks like this:

Database View:
- DOORS Database
+ Project A
+ Project C
+ Project D
+ Project F
+ Project G

Project View:
+ Project B
+ Project E

Why can't I see Project B/E in the Database View since they seem to be at the same level as Project A/C/D/F/G?

In Project view ALL the projects in the database are shown at the top level. Then if you open some project which has subprojects you see also the subprojects inside the parent project, even though the subprojects are also available in the project view.

All,

Thank you for the info. I was under the assumption that while in the project view, only top level projects would be shown and not the subprojects. All is well now.
