For some reason my original message doesn't appear to be showing up. I am not sure how I managed that, but will repeat my question: I need to move DOORS v5.2 from an old NT server to a newer Windows 2003 server. Since it has to be moved anyway, I want to also upgrade to maybe 8.0. I have been doing some reading and realize that I will need a new license, but am looking for any other advice, procedures or links that could help me with this migration. I am not familar with either DOORS or FlexLM, which is also running on the server and will need to be moved over. Thanks.

Yes, v5 and v6 share the same "DOORS" licensing and v7 and v8 share the same "Telelogic" licensing.

Client machines need only have v5 and v8 installed, but to migrate you need one client with v6 and v7; presumably that's the client running on the server. You migrate the data one step at a time, first to v6, then to v7, then to v8. The v6 migration requires the use of the "ModuleMigrator.dxl" tool available on Support site (or here if you ask for it).

Your IT Admin must be cognizant of the different DB data locations. Our scheme has a folder: c:\Doors-Data\v5-Data, with sibling folders v6-Data, v7-Data, and v8-Data. The various services must of course respond to different ports, perhaps "36677" for v5, "36600" for v6, "37700" for v7, and "38800" for v8.

The servers and the clients peacefully coexist on the same machine. Get the v6-7-8 DOORS databases all working before you start; they start off empty. Turn off the v6-7-8 services. Then erase the v6-7-8 databases using Windows Explorer.

Turn off the v5 service. Copy the v5 data location ..err.. the contents of the v5 data location (folders a "conf" and "hierarchy" and a few files) and paste it in the v6 location. Run v6 as the Administrator. (ModuleMigrator.dxl at this time for v6 only). When v6 works and you see all the projects that you had in v5, then repeat: turn off the v6 server, copy ... etc.

I'd advise taking your time installing v8 on all the Clients, pointing to an empty database. After the big upgrade week-end is over, establish an empty v5 database with a module that advises folks to use their v8 icons from here on out.

You can remove v6 and v7 once you're happy with v8.

Louie, thanks for your response. I do have a question for you: >Get the v6-7-8 DOORS databases all working before you start; they start off empty. Turn off the >v6-7-8 services. Then erase the v6-7-8 databases using Windows Explorer. In the above section of the reply, when you say that the db's start off empty and then later they are ereased (deleted?) with Wndows Explorer, are you saying the old db files need to be deleted after the newer version is up and running OR are there sample db data files that need to be removed before moving to each newer version? Thanks again. Helena

By "empty" I mean you see only the DB folder when you run DOORS: there are no folders nor modules. However, there are numerous database files ..err.. windows database files that get created when the database is created, there is a "hierarchy" and a "conf" folder among others. When I say "erase" I mean delete all those files and folders leaving the DB root folder ..err.. windows DB root folder empty.

When you install the DOORS server software, it by defaults presumes the database is in location: c:\Program Files\Telelogic\DOORS 7.1\data\. That's the windows database root folder.

If you erase and then start the DOORS client, you automatically log in as the Administrator and DOORS creates the initial database.
