Answer:
In the end we took a day's consultancy and with a little DXL magic, a few custom attributes and types and a Word Template we now have the ability to export exactly what's in Doors into Word, into our predefined form, ready to print off.
The only downside is that to do this is that we can't used pre-defined styles on the word template, it's either Word or Doors that is used. To get diagrams, bullets, formatting, etc onto the Word doc., we copy to system clipboard, and paste into fields on the word doc.

Hi everyone,

Is it possible for us to put a Doors Module's contents into a pre-defined MS Word template?

We wish to have a module that contains queries on Reqt. objects (also held in Doors).
Each row will be linked to the Reqt. that is affected, and the columns represent attributes that match parts of the MS Word form.
Each Doors row represents 1 MS Word document.

I'm hoping that there's a way to create our MS Word file from the Doors Module, as we need to produce these documents in a particular format.

All help/suggestions greatly appreciated

Depending on your Word format, you may be able to do what you need with a Word Macro. If you have a Word template with paragraph styles defined for each attribute, then all you need to do is record a Macro to do the Search and replace, which can include formatting.

Would an export to a table, using a pre-defined template, not be more suitable for what Iwant?

You can already export to a pre-defined template (see the Advanced tab on the "Export to Word" dialog box). This determines which styles are applied to the information which comes from DOORS. You specify the styles per attribute from within DOORS -- see Tools/Support Tools/Edit Paragraph Style Attribute.

If your template is more complex than that, you will either have to write your own DOORS -> Word exporter or, as suggested by Hazel Woodcock, write some kind of Word macro post-processor. You can look at the existing word.dxl to get started.

Hi,

I wrote a VB application (embedded in a Word template) that processed a DOORS exported table and produced a Word document to a pre-defined style. This routine also included formatting of requirement text into tables that included parent object trace, test method and comments.

The works on the following principles:

1. DXL export from DOORS to Word is problematic when using Word 97. The error "Formatting too complex" is displayed relying on the user to "baby-sit" the export. This is a bug in Word, not handled by the DXL. Hence using "Paragraph Style" attributes will not work.

2. A new attribute/type is created to map Word Styles to DOORS Objects. However, so of these are tags used to indicate an event such as create table and populate with other attributes (besides Object Text/Heading) i.e.: create a table with 1st column = Object ID, 1nd column = Parent (traced) Object ID, 3rd column = Object Text, 4th column = Comment

3. Do not manage tables in DOORS use Word Objects.

4. Do not manage styled text in DOORS; use the Word template to style text

5. Create a Word template that suits your companies style and feel; using the DOORS Object Level to correctly select the heading style

I can be contacted on simonp@purpleant.net if you want a copy. It is completely tailorable and I can supply a document to tell you how to do it. Please expect a small charge per head; you can evaluate to see what you think.

I've been using it an improving it for the last couple of years and have tailored it for requirements specifications and test plans.

Simon

Another option would be to tweak the DOORS -> RTF exporter I've uploaded in the DXL Exchange forum so it exports in your format. Granted it might take you a minute or two to get your head around the way the scripts work , but it is tailorable and fairly versatile. See Export to MSWord in RTF format.
