I downloaded the free modeler and obtained a license, but it seems that it is only valid for one year. So presumably after a year I will no longer be able to use modeler, so I had better make printed copies of any models so that I can see what I did?

Why is the license for only one year for this free version? (Normal paid-for Rhapsody licences are permanent.)

I would think that this would discourage people from using the free modeler, because I guess that UML modelling tools that do not have a limit on their lifetime would be more attractive. (Except, of course, that Rhapsody is a nice tool!)

You can renew the license of the Modeler after one year to continue using it.
