Creating a change plan

Use a change plan to manage changes to your database objects and run those changes against your target database.

Before you begin

A connection to the database that you want to change must exist.

About this task

Change plans are automatically created when you initiate a change directly from the Administration Explorer or the Object List, or you can explicitly create a change plan.

Procedure

Complete one of the following two steps to create a change plan:

  1. To explicitly create a change plan, complete the following steps:
    1. In the Administration Explorer, right-click the Change Plans folder of the database that you want to change and then click Create Change Plan.
    2. Enter a name for the change plan in the Create a Change Plan dialog and then click OK.
    3. To make the new change plan active, right-click the change plan in the Object List and then click Edit.
  2. To have a change plan created automatically, complete the following steps:
    1. If a change plan is active, close that change plan. On the change plan toolbar in the Object List, click the Image of the Close Change plan icon (Close change plan) icon.
    2. Initiate a change to alter, create, drop, or change the privileges for an object:
      • To create a new object, in the Administration Explorer or in the Data Source Explorer, right-click the folder that contains the type of object to create and then click Create Object. Depending on the object that you are creating, you might be prompted to specify a schema, table, or view in which to create the object. Set the attributes for the new object in the Properties view.
      • To alter or drop an existing object, find the object in the Object List or in the Data Source Explorer. Right-click the object and then click Alter or Drop. Change the attributes for an altered object in the Properties view.

A change plan is automatically created with a default name of Default Change Plan timestamp, where timestamp has the form yyyy-mm-dd hh-mm-ss.

What to do next

Your change plan is the active change plan that is displayed in the change plan toolbar in the Object List. You can define any additional changes that you want to make to your change plan. They are added to the change plan. You can then generate the commands that are required to make the changes in the change plan and run them.
