Once you have installed the course files they will be located in the C:\RE1450\SYSTEM subdirectory. Follow the directions below to install them on your 4690 system. Create a diskette containing these files on your e-mail system. If you are using a Windows-based PC, you must run CHKDSK -F (this is the CHKDSK command with the -F option) on your 4690 system before trying to copy the files to the appropriate subdirectory. If you do not run CHKDSK the files will be unreadable by the 4690 system. The following is a list of the SYSTEM files needed to complete the exercises. TSLOG.BAS is mentioned as a course tool for debugging purposes. If you don't have such a tool, you may want to compile and use it in your development work. The other files that have an extent of BAS need to be compiled, if you want to use some of the batch files that are provided. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS =========================== NOTE: Before you begin installation make sure you have the Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0 or higher installed on your system. If you do not have the reader installed you can download a free copy at: http://www.adobe.com/ Once you have the Acrobat Reader installed it is suggested that you take a few minutes and familiarize yourself with PDF document navigation. This will greatly enhance your learning experience as you work through the course. COURSE FILES The course is distributed in the form of a self-extracting .EXE file. Once you have entered the password, the ZIP archive file will extract the course files and automatically install them on your hard drive. The installed files directory structure should look like this: C:\ RE1450--- |_HTML |_SYSTEM |_PDF |_TESTS - Go to your START MENU => PROGRAMS - You will see a program group named RE1460 - Select the item named "Begin Course" - The course should open in Acrobat Reader NAVIGATING THE COURSE ======================= COURSE UNITS The main sections of the course are in PDF format and can best be viewed in the Adobe Acrobat Reader. Here are some more tips to help you navigate the course: You will see items throughout the course in "Blue Boxes." These are links to other documents. Keep the Bookmarks open for ease of navigation. (see the Acrobat Reader Help for more information on using Bookmarks in PDF documents.) GLOSSARY USAGE A glossary of POS terms is included at the end of the course materials and can be accessed quickly through the Bookmarks. Once selected, the Glossary will open in a new web browser window. Once loaded, keep this window open but minimized for easy referral during the session. TESTING Tests are located at the end of each Unit. When selected the test file opens in a new frames-based browser window. The test questions are displayed in the bottom frame and feedback is displayed in the top frame. TAKING THE COURSE ================== In taking self-directed courses, it is recommended that once you begin the course, you work at least two hours on it each day until you complete the course. This consistent approach provides continuity and keeps you from having to review too much. You should expend a "good effort" on an exercise before you look in Appendix A for the Exercise Solutions. And remember, there may be more than one good way to code a solution. All of the materials indicated in the "Unit References" section at the beginning of each unit are available through the IBM Retail Store SOlutions Web site at: http://www.ibm.com/industries/retail/store/ Click on Support, and then click on Publications. The format of this class is as follows: - Course Introduction (short) - Unit Presentation (with Speaker Notes) - Unit Handouts and Exercises - Unit Test Each succeeding unit repeats the last three items. When doing the exercises, it is suggested that you print them out and if any questions arise, write them on the printed copy to later compare with the answers provided in the Exercise Solutions Appendix A. QUESTIONS WHILE TAKING THIS COURSE =================================== To ask questions while you are taking this course, send an e-mail to GRSE@us.ibm.com Answers to questions directly related to course content will be posted to the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section of the Web site so that all students may benefit. For questions that are directly related to the course content, it is our intention to provide a 24-hour turnaround for responding. PRINTING ======== COURSE FILES You may find it useful to print out the course materials at some point. This can be accomplished easily from within Adobe Acrobat Reader. Simply select the Printer button on the Adobe Reader Tool Bar and the course graphics, exercises and solutions will print as one document. TESTS The tests are not intended to be printed. They were developed in JAVA and are frames-based to provide instant feedback for the learner. As such, they are not readily printable. GLOSSARY In order to print the Glossary correctly you must: - Click anywhere in the "definitions" section of the screen - Go to the FILE menu - Select "Print Frame" NOTE: Be aware that the file is approximately 70 pages long.
