About this release

New in this release

The Tivoli Enterprise Console Feature Option introduces three major components: (1) an additional event adapter for event sources using Web Services invocations; (2) an extension to a Common Event Infrastructure event server running inside a WebSphere Application Server to enable event forwarding directly to a Tivoli Enterprise Console server; and (3) a Web Services event receiver for a Common Event Infrastructure event server running inside a WebSphere Application Server

The new event adapter is called the Enterprise Console Web Services Adapter: a standalone process that can receive events through Web Services invocations and forward these events to an Enterprise Console server. This adapter implements a subset of the Web Services Notification specification, which is promoted by the Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (http://www.oasis-open.org) and supported by other major software vendors. This new feature allows a Tivoli Enterprise Console operator to manage events produced by event sources using Web Services invocations, such as event sources based on the IBM Autonomic Computing Toolkit (http://www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/autonomic).

As background for users still not familiar with the Common Event Infrastructure, it is an integral part of the IBM WebSphere Process Server (http://www-306.ibm.com/software/integration/wps/) product and also a key event integration technology within IBM next generation of products.

The event forwarding extension is called the EIF WebSphere JMS Provider and augments the WebSphere Application Server messaging capabilities with support for converting the event format used by Common Event Infrastructure to the EIF (Event Integration Facility) format used by a Tivoli Enterprise Console event server. This new feature allows a Tivoli Enterprise Console operator to manage events produced by event sources such as the IBM WebSphere Business Monitor (http://www-306.ibm.com/software/integration/wbimonitor/) product.

The Common Event Infrastructure Web Services receiver uses the same Web Services interface used by the Enterprise Console Web Services Adapter and combined with the EIF WebSphere JMS Provider, allows a Tivoli Enterprise Console administrator to route events through a Common Event Infrastructure event server before forwarding a copy of the event to a Tivoli Enterprise Console event server. The combination of these two features enables event management through the Tivoli Enterprise Console graphical interfaces at the same time it also allows events to be used for business process monitoring in the IBM WebSphere Business Monitor product.

More information about Common Event Infrastructure can be found at http://www-306.ibm.com/software/tivoli/features/cei/.

Known problems and workarounds

Defect 185737: EIF WebSphere JMS Provider needs additional directory permissions on z/OS

Description: After installing the EIF WebSphere JMS Provider in some z/OS installations, the internal WebSphere Application Server user may not have sufficient to modify the files under the <WAS_PROFILE_PATH>/eventext/tec_classes directory. This problem prevents the EIF WebSphere JMS Provider from processing any events coming from the Common Event Infrastructure.

Workaround: After installing the EIF WebSphere JMS Provider or after copying over baroc files modified in the Enterprise Console event server rule base, manually change the permissions to the <WAS_PROFILE_PATH>/eventext/tec_classes directory, using the following command:

chmod -R 777 <WAS_PROFILE_PATH>/eventext/tec_classes

Defect 185779: No installation script for Common Event Infrastructure Web Services Receiver on WebSphere Application Server Network Distribution

Description: The installation script for the Common Event Infrastructure Web Services Receiver does not work when servers are federated into a WebSphere Application Server cell.

Workaround: Install the <install_dir>/bin/wsnt-was.ear file using the WebSphere Administrative Console:

  1. From a machine where the cei-600-wsnt.zip file has been expanded, open the WebSphere Administrative Console on your web browser of choice
  2. Open "Applications" in the navigation bar
  3. Open "Enterprise Applications"
  4. Click on the "Install" button
  5. Click on the "Browse..." button
  6. Select the <install_dir>/bin/wsnt-was.ear file
  7. Proceed with default options until "Step 2" in the "Install new Application" panel
  8. On "Step 2" in the "Install new Application" panel, select the WebSphere Application Server instances where you want the application to run
  9. Proceed with default options until "Step 6" in the "Install new Application" panel, skipping the harmless warning on "Step 3"
  10. Review the summary on "Step 6" in the "Install new Application" panel and click "Finish"
Defect 185780: Files not deleted during the Enterprise Console Web Services Adapter uninstallation on Windows systems

Description: During uninstallation of the Enterprise Console Web Services, the process completes successfully but the uninstall directory is not deleted.

Workaround: Delete the entire installation directory manually after running the uninstallation steps.

Product notes

The Web Services Adapter is only supported on the same Operating Systems and Hardware types supported by the Enterprise Console 3.9 event server with Fix Pack 4 or greater.

Defect 190018: barocgen.bat and barocgen.sh commands display English messages in non-English environments.

Description: English messages are displayed by barocgen.bat and barocgen.sh commands in the command window in non-English environment. These are trace output of the program.

Workaround: Java, by default, sends all trace output of level INFO and higher to the console. This can be controlled by the user by supplying a user defined logging.properties file to the Java command in the barocgen.bat and barocgen.sh files

Defect 190016: Launching Enterprise Console Web Services Adapter in Windows displays English messages in non-English environments.

Description: An English message is displayed while launching Enterprise Console Web Services Adapter, using launch.bat command in Windows in non-English environment.

Workaround: None.

Defect 190013: Configuration of the Enterprise Console Web Services Adapter displays English messages in non-English environment.

Description: English messages are displayed during configuration of the Enterprise Console Web Services Adapter as Windows service in non-English environment.

Workaround: None

Defect 190131: English messages are displayed in the installation verification URL for the Enterprise Console Web Services Adapter in non-English environment.

Description: The installation verification URL for the Enterprise Console Web Services Adapter shows English messages in French and German environment. In Japanese environment, the URL displays Japanese and English messages in the same web page.

Workaround: None.
