The objective of discounting is to attract customers to make purchases in the store by offering various incentives to the right segment of customers at the right time
A discount is an incentive offered to a group of customers within a time interval. The incentives may be offered by reducing prices to specific products, total purchase price, service charges, or even by giving away free gifts.
The Product Manager or merchandising manager may offer percentage discounts (such as 10% off), fixed-amount discounts (such as $15 off), or a different discount scheme such as "buy one get one free". For example, she may offer a 20% price reduction for a specific Cat Food to senior citizens; or if she has too many red baseball caps in stock, she may offer a 25% discount on the caps for a limited time.
