The objective of promotions is to encourage customers to make purchases in the store by offering various incentives to the right segment of customers at the right time.
A promotion is an incentive offered to an individual customer or a group of customers within a time interval. The incentives may be offered by reducing prices on specific products, total purchase price, service charges, or even by giving away free gifts.
The Marketing Manager or Product Manager may offer percentage discounts (such as 10% off), fixed-amount discounts (such as $15 off), or a different discount scheme such as "buy one get one free". For example, she may offer a 20% price reduction for a specific cat food to senior citizens; or if she has too many red baseball caps in stock, she may offer a 25% discount on the caps for a limited time.
In addition, promotions may be targeted as coupons. A coupon is an online equivalent of a paper coupon. A coupon promotion may be set up so that customers must have a coupon assigned to them in order to redeem the promotion.
