IBM iDataPlex

Many data centers today need the highest possible server performance to meet growing High Performance Computing workloads, Web 2.0, and cloud computing demands. But what they don’t need – and simply can’t justify – are the sky-high power demands, exorbitant cooling costs, and huge floor space requirements that high performance can bring.

That’s where IBM comes in – with server technology that actually uses fewer resources in less space to deliver more performance than traditional rack servers. IBM’s iDataPlex dx360 M2 server is built for high performance, designed for high density, and optimized for high efficiency. So while it keeps performance high, it keeps power and cooling costs low.

Place Holder

Equipped with the latest generation of Intel Xeon Series 5500 processors, the iDataPlex dx360 M2 server is a two-socket solution that’s engineered for performance. With 16 memory slots featuring fast DDR3 memory, it provides more performance with lower power draw than servers based on previous generations of DDR memory. The server also includes a range of options for high bandwidth networking required in today’s high performance data centers.

As part of IBM’s iDataPlex solution for more productive data center operations, iDataPlex dx360 M2 servers are designed to achieve maximum density and efficiency – in the way they use everything from floor space to cooling to power.

In keeping with the iDataPlex commitment to efficiency, iDataPlex dx360 M2 servers are highly energy-efficient. Their half-depth design reduces the airflow required for cooling. And they feature high-efficiency fans, power supplies, and other components to further reduce power requirements. There’s even an optional rear door heat exchanger that can be installed to cool the hot air generated by servers. – so that more server density doesn’t have to mean more air conditioning to keep things cool.

iDataPlex dx360 M2 servers include iDataPlex Flex Node technology, which offers a choice of chassis types and a multitude of configuration possibilities. This flexibility makes it easy to meet specific needs for things like compute power, storage intensity, I/O, and networking.

For example, to achieve maximum compute density for High Performance Computing environments, each 2U flex chassis can hold 2 high performance server compute nodes. On the other hand, to increase storage capacity, as might be required for applications like Web 2.0 caching, there’s a storage tray that can be configured with added hard drives and PCI adapters. Yet another option is a 3U chassis that holds up to 12TB of hot swap storage, which is ideal for intense media serving and large image caching.

iDataPlex dx360 M2 servers are also designed to be easy to configure, maintain, and manage. When they’re installed as part of an iDataPlex solution, they come completely pre-integrated and ready to power up and go to work. These servers can be mounted in either iDataPlex or traditional enterprise racks, depending on specific data center requirements. Either way, once they’re in place, they are easy to maintain, with individually serviceable nodes and front access to cabling and hard drives. And to make systems management easier, the new Integrated Management Module provides robust management and leverages the IBM Systems Director 6.1 set of common tools that’s used to manage other IBM technology assets.

When it’s critical to control costs in the data center – and still deliver the high performance that HPC and Internet-scale environments demand – the best choice is an iDataPlex solution that includes IBM’s iDataPlex dx360 M2 server.
