IBM PTF 10458 TABLE OF CONTENTS General Install What It Does Uninstall Available Levels Of ServeRAID Recovery Procedures How To Tell What Level Of ServRAID Is On Your Machine GENERAL This PTF installs the ServeRAID 5.11.05 code onto any machine running the Windows 2000 operating system, and which has a ServeRAID adapter. NAS nodes which form a cluster must have this upgrade installed individually. INSTALL The installation is reversible, but only up to a certain point. After that, the upgrade cannot be uninstalled. The installer will be warned before reaching that point. Once the installation progresses beyond this "point of no return", the only way to restore the machine back to its original state is to reinstall the particular level of ServeRAID software from a separate source (see the UNINSTALL section). Download the PTF10458.EXE to a temporary directory and execute it. It will expand into the installation files (including this file). Execute the SETUP.BAT to install the upgrade. Follow the screen prompts. Use defaults except where directed not to. When finished, you may erase these files and the PTF10458.EXE file. WHAT IT DOES The installation will first have the installer create diskettes which will be needed later to upgrade the ServeRAID adapter's bios and firmware. After that, the ServeRAID Manager will be updated, and then the device drivers. The installer will be directed to shut the machine down and then reboot from the diskettes. This will update the ServeRAID adapter's bios and firmware. The machine might have to be configured using the Setup and Configuration Utility in order to get the machine to boot from the diskettes. At the end of the bios/firmware update, the user will be advised that the ServeRAID Manager and device drivers must also be upgraded. Don't be concerned about that - it's already been done. Remove the diskette and reboot the machine. When the machine comes up, the rest of the installation will take place automatically. Another shutdown and reboot will be required and that's it. UNINSTALL As stated before, you can't completely uninstall this PTF. However, you can install another version of ServeRAID over the top of it. Here's how. You must follow the steps without rebooting the machine until the very end. If you don't, you may risk a "blue screen" failure, which usually means that the operating system has to be reinstalled from scratch. 1. Get a copy of the ServeRAID installation software onto the machine in a temporary directory. This will install normally with one slight modification. (See step 5). 2. Go to Start-->Settings-->Control Panel-->Add/Remove Programs. 3. Remove ServeRAID Manager. 4. Install the software following the instructions, but see the next step. 5. Usually, at some point in these installations, it is necessary to reboot the machine using diskettes. These are used to update the ServeRAID adapter's bios/firmware. Before doing that, you must edit the AUTOEXEC.BAT file on the first diskette. Change: flashman to: flashman /FORCE AVAILABLE LEVELS OF SERVERAID 4.84 get PTF9278 5.11.05 get PTF10458 (this one). RECOVERY PROCEDURES If a recovery procedure is used to restore the operating system to version 2.5 or earlier, AFTER this PTF is applied, then this PTF will need to be reapplied. Otherwise, the versions of ServeRAID Manager application and device drivers recovered will be earlier than 5.11.05, while the adapter firmware will remain at 5.11.05. This creates an unmatched, untested, unsupported combination of driver/app/firmware. HOW TO TELL WHAT LEVEL OF SERVRAID IS ON YOUR MACHINE Start the IBM NAS Admin.msc. Expand Storage. Expand ServeRAID Manager. Click on the indented ServeRAID Manager. In the ServeRAID console which just opened up, Click on each (Local System). Notice the levels for the ServeRAID Manager agent and console. Expand each (Local System). Click on each Controller. Notice the BIOS version, Firmware version and Device driver version. Close the console before trying to install PTF10458.
