Wikimedia is a non-profit organization that provides computing and network resources to create and distribute free content. Since we do not plan to ever have advertisements, and we will never charge authors to write or readers to read any of our content, we rely on donations to keep us going.

Please note that Wikimedia has not yet received an official determination of its 501(c)(3) tax exempt status under United States federal law, so these donations may be considered taxable income for Wikimedia and may not be deductible from the donor's income under the tax rules. Rest assured that they will be used for Wikimedia projects, including Wikipedia.

Methods
If you wish to make a donation you can do so by PayPal (credit cards accepted) or through the mail at Wikimedia's head office (see below). Please do not send currency through the mail. Also, sending any foreign drafts, checks or other negotiable instruments may entail significant collection costs, a international postal money order or a check drawn on a US banking institution will make sure your complete donation goes to Wikimedia.

British Pounds
Canadian Dollars
European Euros
Japanese Yen
United States Dollars

You can also send donations via snail-mail to the official public record address of the Wikimedia Foundation:

  Wikimedia Foundation Inc.
  3911 Harrisburg St. NE
  St. Petersburg, FL 33703

Legal status
Created under Florida law, the official corporate address for the Wikimedia Foundation Inc. is in St. Petersburg, Florida, see above address. Any donations (money, stuff, copyright assignments) can certainly be sent to the main address. Please note donations may not be tax deductible for U.S. residents and nationals; please direct any questions in this regard to your tax professional. For those outside the United States please contact local tax authorities to determine if there is any tax treaty that may allow you to deduct your donations to Wikimedia from your income.

Even though Wikimedia is still applying for official tax exempt status it has registered with the Florida Division of Consumer Services, a division of the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and may lawfully solicit donations in Florida. Others outside Florida are still free to make donations, but if you are outside Florida and view this web page, then do not consider it as a solicitation for a donation.

Therefore, anyone who wishes to make a donation, no matter their current residence or the laws of their country, can certainly do so. Wikimedia is a Florida not-for-profit corporation whose purpose is to establish and maintiain free wiki-based projects for world-wide distribution. While Wikimedia may not have a US federal tax-exempt status determination yet, under US Internal Revenue Code provisions if Wikimedia's first year's income is projected to be under $5,000, it has an automatic exemption.
