About a Rational Service Release

A Rational service release includes important product fixes, and may include new features. It is developed for a specific product-version and does not affect the licensing of your products. Since there is no effect on licensing, the service release does not allow you to configure licensing while you apply it to the software. You will, however, be asked to accept the service release license agreement before installing.

A service release detects the products on your system and updates the program components. You do not have to find and select product-specific service releases. Because a service release is cumulative, you can apply the latest service release without applying earlier service releases. After you apply a service release, you may see new shortcuts or files. The service release updates the Rational product’s version number from, for example, 2003.06.00 to 2003.06.01. You can see the change in the "About <Rational Product> " dialog in the product’s Help menu, or in the "Rational Installed Product Information" dialog on the Start menu.

Supported Configurations

You can apply this service release to the following v2003.06.00 Rational product configurations:

Unsupported Configurations

You cannot apply a Rational service release to:

If the service release detects an unsupported configuration, it cannot update the components. The program displays a generic warning message indicating that it did not find any suitable product for updating.

Installing an Additional Product to an Updated System

When you install any Rational product to a system that already has had a service release applied to it, the setup program warns you that the products on your system are updated. Continue with the installation and then re-apply the service release to update the additional product.

Ensuring Version Compatibility

Before you can apply this service release, you must determine that v2003.06.00 Rational products are installed on your system.

  1. Select Start > Programs > Rational Software > Rational Software Installed Product Information
  2. Ensure that, for each Rational product listed, the Build ID (version number) is 2003.06.00.436.000 If it is not 2003.06.00.436.000, remove or upgrade as follows:

  3. Continue with the service release installation

Note: Once a service release is applied, you cannot uninstall the updates it makes. To revert to your previous Rational product configuration:

  1. Uninstall all Rational products for which the service release was applied.
  2. Install your preferred Rational product version again.

Using the Rational Software Setup Program

Access the service release from http://www.rational.com/support/downloadcenter/index.jsp. We recommend that you download the file by saving it to your hard disk instead of opening it directly from the Web site.

This service release download includes a security utility that verifies publisher authenticity (Rational). You should verify the authenticity of the file before installing the service release:

  1. Download the .msp file to your computer.
  2. If you do not have the Microsoft Authenticode utilities kit, go to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads and enter the keyword "authenticode".
  3. Install the Authenticode utilities for Internet Explorer, and note the location where the kit was installed.
  4. Open a DOS window and enter the command: C:\<path to authenticode utilities kit directory> >chktrust.exe <path to .msp file>
    (example: C:\inetsdk\bin>chktrust.exe c:\rationalsr1.msp)

Wait 5-15 minutes, depending on how many programs are running on the system. Eventually, you will see either:

  5. If:
  6. Once the file is downloaded, follow these instructions to install the service release.

Installation Issues

Registry Size

You need to increase the size of your Windows registry if you encounter the following system error during installation of this service release:

"Your maximum registry size is too small. To ensure that Windows runs properly, increase your maximum registry size. For more information, see Help."

Let the service release installation complete, then increase your system’s registry size by 10MB. For instructions, use your operating system's Help system.

Service Release Log File

If you want to keep a record of all installation activities for this service release, you should create a service release log file for this service release. For information on how to do this, refer to the Installation Guide for Rational Server Products

Installation Instructions

Make sure that you have read the Getting Started and Installation Information before:

  1. Installing this service release:

  2. Removing a service release.
  3. Canceling installation of a service release.

Installing the Rational Service Release Directly to a Desktop Client or Server

  1. Before you begin, decide whether or not to create a Rational service release log file.
The service release setup program does not display an error summary and it does not automatically create a log file. You can have the service release setup program create a log file that records installation activities, often used to trace installation errors.

  2. Then, install the service release using one of the following methods and proceed with step 3:

    • <path to service release.msp> is the location of the service release mechanism you downloaded. Map a network drive to this location. For instructions on how to do this, refer to your Windows Help system.
    • The last portion /l*v <mylog>.log creates a service release log file.
    • If multiple products are on your system, use /l*v+ <mylog>.log to ensure that the log which patches all individual products is appended to the log file.
You should name the file something other than Rational_install.log, so as not to overwrite your installation log from Rational v2003.06.00 installation (if it was created in the same location as your service release installation log).
You will also need to select a location for this log file and include the path here.

    Notes

Note: You may need to restart your system to complete the service release installation process.

  8. At the end of the installation, click Finish. The Installation Complete window offers:

  9. Ensure that the installation was successful by checking for one or more of the following:

Note: The version number 2003.06.01 will appear for all Rational products, regardless of whether or not a product change was applied to them in this service release. Click here for a list of products included in this service release.

Applying the Rational Service Release Using a Release Area

For reference information on release areas and silent installations, refer to the Installation Guide for Rational Server Products on the Rational Solutions for Windows Online Documentation CD-Rom, or online

Applying this Service Release to a Release Area

  1. Download the service release mechanism.
  2. Look in the Setup folder in the release area for the product's . msi file. For example, Rational Quantify would be quantifyNT.
  3. Use the command msiexec /p <path to service release.msp> /a "<path to product.msi in release area>" /l*v <mylog>.log, where:

  4. When the Welcome dialog box launches, click Update
  5. Read the Product Warnings and perform the required tasks, then click Next.
  6. Read the License Agreement.

  7. Click Next and then Install
  8. The setup program may prompt you to restart your system if:

Note: You may need to restart your system to complete the service release installation process.

  9. At the end of the installation, click Finish. The Installation Complete window offers:

  10. Ensure that the installation was successful by checking for one or more of the following:

  11. Repeat these steps for each product in the release area. If you are updating a Rational Suite, it should have its own .msi file in the Setup folder (for example, wsbuEnterprise.msi).

Note: The version number 2003.06.01 will appear for all Rational products, regardless of whether or not a product change was applied to them in this service release. Click here for a list of products included in this service release.

Installing in Silent Mode from a Patched Release Area

Silent mode is an unattended installation arranged by administrators wherein client users are not required to select options or make decisions about their product installations. This ensures that all users have the same defaults and options on their desktops. For more information on silent installations, refer to the Installation Guide for Rational Server Products

Note: The Rational Software Setup program for service releases does not support post-installation commands. Users must run the silent installation using the following procedure.

We recommend that you back up Rational install log files before performing a silent installation. For more information on how to do this, refer to the Installation Guide for Rational Server Products.

To apply a service release from a release area in silent mode:

  1. Make sure that your system administrator applied the service release to the release area you will use.
  2. Use the following command to install the service release to your desktop client: <local drive>:\setup.exe /g <C:\sitedefs.dat>.

Removing a Rational Service Release

Once a service release is applied, you cannot uninstall the updates it makes from your computer. To revert to your previous Rational product configuration:

  1. Uninstall all Rational products for which the service release was applied.
  2. Install your preferred Rational product version again.

Canceling Installation of a Service Release

To cancel installation after saving the .msp file to your hard disk, and beginning installation, click Cancel at anytime.

Defects and Changes

Defects and Limitations in This Service Release

This section identifies additional defects and limitations associated with v2003.06.00 Rational products that were not included in the v2003.06.00 Rational Release Notes.

Product ID Description
Install
RATLC00243823 The following scenario describes the expected results after installation of the service release to a system wherein the user is incrementally installing Rational products and this service release:
  1. When a user installs a Rational product (A), and then installs the service release, it is applied to the product.
  2. If (on the same system) a user installs another Rational product (B), and installs the service release again, it is reapplied to the first product, and applied to the second product.
  3. If (on the same system) a user installs another Rational product (C), and installs the service release again, it should be reapplied to all the products

Exception:

  • When the order of applying the service release is "A" then "C" then "B,"
  • And if applying the service release to  "C" requires that the user restarts their system,
  • And the product is not ClearCase, ClearCaseLT, or any Rational Suite containing ClearCaseLT .

In this case, the service release is applied to product "A" and "C" and since "B" is already at the desired version, the user restarts their system and the service release is not applied to product "B."

RATLC00702104 After installing one or more Rational products, stray "msiexec" processes linger in memory. Users must restart their systems before applying the service release, even if product installation does not require this.
RATLC00698818 Corrects a defect that causes the About box to not display the version of the product if multiple products are installed and the version of one of them does not match the others. For example, if  different versions of Rational products exist on a user's system and the user selects Help > About ... , UNKNOWN is displayed in the Version field, rather than a version number. The service release fixes this issue so that a version number is displayed, even if the user does not have the same version of different Rational products on their machine.
RATLC00240650
An error message appears when doing Rose Data Modeler Site Preparation.

Workaround: If you are creating an enterprise deployment (release area), and the "Launch installation using these settings" checkbox is checked, some Windows 2000 users may see the product installation start before the release area has been created, wherein, the product installation task didn't wait for the release area task to finish.

If this happens, cancel the installation, then run these two tasks separately:

  1. Run the installer to do an enterprise deployment and create a release area. Clear the "launch" checkbox. Let the process run to completion.
  2. Once the release area is created successfully, do a SitePrep install from that release area.
RATLC00449702 Attempting to run a newly created SQL Anywhere network service after installation may give the following error:
”A database server with that name has already started.” The service then fails to start. If this issue is encountered, do the following:
  1. In Sybase Central, right mouse click the service name and choose Properties.
  2. In the Configuration tab, change the specified server name using the “-n” parameter to a different name.
  3. Click Apply and OK to change the close the dialog.
  4. Right mouse click the service name and select Start to start the service.
RATLC00695603
There are two licensing pages displayed in SitePrep:
  • One within ClearCase pages (License Server - expected)
  • One within Rational Licensing Page (Rational License Server).

Ignore the FlexLM licensing page in SitePrep and custom install.

RATLC00698094
The original source must be available when patching or modifying an installation, otherwise a network share needs to be available containing the file.
Documentation RATLC00059248 In general, Rational does not recommend using workstation versions of Windows operating systems for VOB or view servers because they limit the number of simultaneous connections. To help clarify content about Web servers in the Server Requirements and Recommendations table, we add that:

Windows XP Professional, Windows 2000 Professional, and Windows NT Workstation do not support the Web servers associated with RequisitePro, ClearCase LT Web and ClearQuest Web. These operating systems can be used as a VOB server for ClearCase and a database server for ClearQuest, SQLAnywhere, or Microsoft Access database for a few users. A server operating system is recommended.

RATLC00698707 The material in Chapter 5 of the Rational ClearCase Product Family Installation Guide (Windows) is no longer correct. Instead, users should use the instructions in the Rational® ClearCase® service release Release Notes.
RATLC00698708 The "Modify/Repair/Remove" instructions for ClearCase in the Rational ClearCase Product Family Installation Guide (Windows) are no longer correct. Instead, users should follow these instructions:
  1. Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. Select Rational ClearCase from the list of programs and click Change. The Rational Setup Wizard starts.
  4. Choose one of the following options, then click OK, and follow the instructions:
  • Modify the Existing Installation - Allows you to change which products and product features are installed.
  • Repair the Existing Installation - Attempts to repair any installation that may be damaged or corrupted.
  • Remove the Existing Installation - Removes all files that you previously installed for this product.
ProjectConsole Installation RATLC00450993 When installing Rational Suite to a network release area, the ProjectConsole Web server components should not be selected. If they are, every user who installs from that release area will get the ProjectConsole Web server components (and Rational Web Platform) software loaded and running on their computers.

In addition, when applying a service release to a 2002.06.00 Rational Suite release, you may receive one or more "Source File Not Found" warnings about files in the ...\Classics\Projects\... folder. These warnings can safely be ignored, as they are only used by the ProjectConsole Web server components when accessing the ProjectConsole sample site.

RequisitePro RATLC00703134 In certain configurations, such as Windows NT 4.0 SP6A with Security Patches, the following error may occur when associating a RequisitePro project using the Rational Administrator.

Error Number: 339
Error Description: Component mscomctl.ocx or one of it's dependencies not correctly registered: a file missing or invalid

To correct this, you should manually register the file using the command prompt as follows:
C:\WINNT\system32>regsvr32 mscomctl.ocx
A success message should be displayed indicating the file was properly registered.
